The hand prior Ariel Mantel asked Carter Gill for a chip count. The answer, with a mutual smirk, was in the neighbourhood of 7,300,000.

Then Mantel moved all-in from the small blind, for ten big blinds, with Gill snap calling in the big.

Ariel Mantel, playing for the win

Gill rolled his Aâ™  Kâ™  and Mantel said something that will remain between them.

“Are you ahead?” Gill asked in response.

“I’m okay,” Mantel proffered, tabling Q♣ 10♣ .

He would need to improve to survive, otherwise Carter Gill would increase his hammerlock on this championship a notch.

6♦ 8♦ 8♣ no help for Mantel but backdoor clubs and straights.

2♦ 4♠

Make no mistake, Ariel Mantel wanted to win today more than anything. The $106,300 will have to do.

Carter Gill’s handiwork

Gill had walked into the spectator’s row to walk the run out with his girlfriend on the big screens. She embraced him after the river fell, and has looked much more distressed than her boyfriend who sits on the cusp of a huge victory. He is still chatty, positively lithe.
