No Rafa tennis today. No World Cup qualifying either. After a frenetic Day 2 yesterday at the 2013 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Colombia National Poker Championship, things should be much calmer and more focused today as the remaining 24 players jockey for position for tomorrow’s final-table stretch run to the title.
Colombian player German Arias will start the day with 1,105,000 in chips, nearly double the chips of Venezuelan Mario Donoso (618,000). Yesterday Arias used several sets of kings to jumpstart his day, then continued to wipe players out almost all the way through the end of the day.
There’s no guarantee that Arias will make tomorrow’s final table, hwoever. The remaining field is quite strong. The Day 1a chip leader, Luis Hernan Esquivel, remains in contention, as do well-known LatAm player Mayu Roca and Eduardo Akl, who finished Day 1b second in chips.
Also still in the field are three Team PokerStars Pros. Cristian “El Grillo” de Leon took his Day 1b chip-leading stack all the way through Day 2, finishing with 435,000. He’ll have position on his table’s chip leader, Hector Perez, to start the day.
Team Pros Angel Guillen and Leo Fernandez are also still alive. Each will start on separate tables to start the day. Fernandez will have to deal with Arias, but Guillen’s task is no easier. He has Donoso to his immediate left.
At LAPT6 Brazil in late April, four Team Pros returned for Day 3. Two of them, Fernandez and Andre Akkari, made the final table, finishing 7th and 5th, respectively. Six hours (or so) separate us from finding out whether multiple Team Pros will make the LAPT6 Colombia final table as well.
There’s plenty of side action to sweat as well. Last night, the COP 600,000 NLHE Turbo side event drew 138 entries. Oscar Alache beat out Camilo Posada heads-up to grab the victory and almost COP 19 million. Today two side events are on tap: a COP 1.1 million NLHE re-entry event at noon and a COP 600,000 super satellite to Monday’s COP 6 million NLHE High Roller event.
Yesterday I learned that there is nothing quite like watching international soccer in South America. Today I’ll learn which of LAPT6 Colombia’s final 24 players want a berth at tomorrow’s final table more badly than all the rest.
