When Level 16 began and hand-for-hand play started, it appeared certain we’d see soon someone falling in 104th place, one spot shy of the money. As it happened they’d play nearly the entire level — all of the way to the dinner break — before the big moment finally arrived.

Not that the hour was without excitement. Early on came a hand in which two players on different tables were all in. In one case Mauricio Abreu’s pocket kings held versus Fabian Ortiz’s ace-king. In the other Cesar Abad was all in following a 10♦ 2♣ 10♥ flop, turned over A♦ A♥ versus his opponent’s 8♥ 8♣ , and Abad’s aces held.

A little while after that a hand arose that saw Jakub Kyrian and Nacho Barbero gradually edge over into a preflop raising war, one culminating with Kyrian five-bet shoving and Barbero calling for his entire 140,000 or so.

Barbero — who won this same event during Season 4, his second LAPT title — turned over A♥ K♦ , while Kyrian showed 10♣ 8♣ . The 5♦ 5♣ 3♣ flop provided a flush draw for Kyrian and a sweat for Nacho, with the 2â™  turn only further complicating matters for the Argentinian.

But the river was the 6♦ , and Barbero survived to engage in some post-hand banter with his opponent.

The bubble had taken a beating, but remained intact. At last, however, a final blow on the feature table saw it finally burst.

Following a 4â™  J♦ K♥ flop, Sergio Larrain would be all in for his last 22,700 with A♣ K♣ versus Leandro Csome’s A♦ Q♥ .

The turn brought the 6â™  , and Larrain appeared primed to join the club of double-uppers. But the 10â™  fell on fifth street, earning a roar from everyone watching on the big screen in the room’s corner at the sight of Csome’s straight.

The pace predictably quickened thereafter, and once the dinner bell rang there were 99 players who’d be enjoying their evening meal with the knowledge their hopes of becoming the LAPT Peru Grand Final champion were still in play.
