* Jose Ignacio “Nacho” Barbero wins record-breaking third LAPT title for R$341,182

12:40am: It’s over! Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero wins record third LAPT title!
Level 29 – Blinds 80,000/160,000 (20,000 ante)

Wow. Jose Barbero just made history. He is, and will always be, the only player in history to win three LAPT titles.

It took just one hand of heads-up. Thiago Grigoletti shoved the 8♥ 4♥ from the small blind and Barbero snap-called with A♠ Q♥ . The board fell J♣ 2♦ 7♦ 9♠ Q♦ and it was all over.

For his second place finish, Grigoletti wins R$275,180.

But for Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero, he’s won so much more than the massive R$341,182 he’s pocketed. Barbero has overtaken the other two-time LAPT champs (Oscar Alache, Mario Lopez, and Fabian Ortiz) and will forever be cemented as the winningest LAPT player of all time.

We’ll be back with a full report of this tournament shortly. For now, goodnight from Brazil! –JS

12:30am: Felipe Pasini out in 3rd (R$314,776)
Level 29 – Blinds 80,000/160,000 (20,000 ante)

We’re down to heads-up as Felipe Pasini has just been eliminated. He opened to 325,000 on the button only for Jose Barbero to shove in the small blind. It got back to Pasini and he called off his 1.6 million.

Pasini – A♣ 8♣
Barbero – 7♣ 7â™

The Brazilian would need to hit, but the board ran 6â™  2♣ 9♥ 9â™  4♥ and he was gone. Barbero has a massive 14 million to 1.8 million chip lead. History could be in the making… –JS

12:25am: Barbero on the rise
Level 29 – Blinds 80,000/160,000 (20,000 ante)

Jose Ignacio “Nacho” Barbero has been dominating since the deal was made and he’s now up to 10.4 million.

After doubling up through Pasini, Barbero took some big chunks off of Thiago Grigoletti without a showdown. Barbero opened to 355,000 from the button in one of those hands and Grigoletti three-bet to 900,000 from the big blind. Barbero thought for a bit, moved all-in and Grigoletti folded.

Grigoletti then opened to 320,000 the following hand and Barbero re-raised to 780,000 from the big blind. Grigoletti called but then folded when Barbero bet 1,025,000 on the 6♠ 7♥ Q♠ flop.

When Grigoletti got the button back he opened to 350,000 again and Barbero made it 750,000. Grigoletti folded and was left with 3.2 million while Barbero’s stack rose to 10.4 million. –AV

12:16am: Deal details
Level 29 – Blinds 80,000/160,000 (20,000 ante)

Here’s how the players have chopped up the money:

Felipe Pasini – R$314,776
Thiago Grigoletti – R$275,180
Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero – R$248,068

Those amounts are set in stone. They are still playing for R$93,114 and the LAPT title and trophy. –JS

12:10am: The deal can wait, Barbero’s doubling up
Level 29 – Blinds 80,000/160,000 (20,000 ante)

The three players have agreed on a deal but we haven’t got the official numbers yet. In the meantime, Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero has just doubled up through Felipe Pasini in a pretty sick hand.

Barbero opened to 350,000 on the button and Pasini defended to see the 5♥ 4♦ 9♥ flop. It checked to Barbero who continued for 275,000, which was called.

The turn came the 9♣ and both decided to check to the 8♥ river. This would prove to be an action card.

Pasini led out for 600,000 only for Barbero to jam for 2.23 million. After a little though Pasini made the call, and saw the bad news. His 6♣ 7♦ had made a straight by the river, but that eight gave Barbero a full house as he had the 8♦ 8♣ . Barbero doubled to around 7.6 million, while Pasini drops to 3.6 million. –JS

12:00am: Back a little late
Level 29 – Blinds 80,000/160,000 (20,000 ante)

The break took a little longer than expected since our final three players decided to discuss a deal. Cards are back in the air and we’ll update you with details on the deal soon. –AV

11:30pm: Mixing millions
Level 28 – Blinds 60,000/120,000 (20,000 ante)

The final three players seem to enjoy shifting chips by the million.

Felipe Pasini raised to 275,000 and Grigoletti called from the big blind two hands after Melogno’s elimination. Grigoletti then check-called a 250,00 bet on the 10♣ 8♣ 5♥ flop. The turn brought a 5♦ and 500,000 bet from Grigoletti and Pasani called. A J♥ came on the river and Grigoletti upped the bet to 1.1 million

It was too much for Pasini. He folded and dropped to 7.5 million while Grigoletti’s stack rose to 5 million.

Then Pasini took a million off of Barbero two hands later.

Barber called from the button in that hand and Grigoletti did the same from the small blind. Pasini made it 550,000 from the big blind and only Barbero called. Pasini then led out for 400,000 on the 5♦ 7♥ 8♦ flop and Barbero called.

The turn was a 2♥ and after some thought, Pasini moved all in and Barbero snap-folded.

The hand put Pasini back up to 8.5 million while Barbero dropped to 3.15 million. –AV

11:20pm: Joaquin Melogno out in 4th (R$169,940)
Level 28 – Blinds 60,000/120,000 (20,000 ante)

You wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait and wait for a good hand to come up, then this one happens.

It started with a cutoff open from Felipe Pasini to 275,000, and that was then three-bet to 815,000 by Joaquin Melogno on the button. The blinds got out of the way and when it was back to Pasini he put in a four-bet to 1.5 million. Melogno shoved, and was snap-called.

Melogno – Jâ™  J♥
Pasini – A♥ A♦

We knew it would take two big hands or the increasing blinds to make something happen, and these two hands were certainly big enough. The board ran out 5♣ 8♣ 10♥ 9♦ , giving Melogno and up and down straight draw, but the 3♥ river changed nothing.

Melogno was shocked at his exit, while Pasini moves up to 8.4 million. –JS

Level 28 – Blinds 60,000/120,000 (20,000 ante)

There hasn’t been much to report this level I’m afraid. All four remaining players have similar chip stacks (around 3.5 million each), and it feels like we’re just waiting for the blinds to get bigger in order to force some action. –JS

10:30pm: Melogno pulls some back
Level 27 – Blinds 50,000/100,000 (10,000 ante)

After taking that hit below, Joaquin Melogno has responded well by grabbing a few of chips back from Thiago Grigoletti. In this hand all players limped/called/checked to see a 3♠ 7♣ 4♠ flop. Felipe Pasini led out for 175,000 which got a call from Melogno, a fold from Nacho Barbero, and a call from Grigoletti on the button.

The turn came the 2♥ and it checked to Grigoletti. He then led out for 375,000 which shook of Pasini, but then after a few minutes of tanking Melogno moved all-in for 2.63 million! Grigoletti got a count but in the end folded.

Grigoletti now has 2.91 million, while Melogno is back up to 3.3 million. –JS

10:20pm: Grigoletti doubles, Pasini chips up
Level 27 – Blinds 50,000/100,000 (10,000 ante)

Joaquin Melogno opened to 205,000 from under the gun and Thiago Grigoletti moved all-in for 2,115,000 from the small blind. Melogno looked conflicted and took longer than usual to act, which is already pretty long. Melogno came out of the tank with a call though and showed A♦ 10â™  to Grigoletti’s 6♦ 6♥ .

The 7♣ 3â™  3♥ Jâ™  K♥ board flipped in Grigoletti’s favor and the Brazilian player doubled up to cheers and chants from the home crowd. Grigoletti doubled to about 4.25 million while Melogno dropped to about 2.8 million.

Then Melogno lost a bit more the following hand.

Barber opened to 225,000 from under the gun and Felipe Pasini called from the small blind. Melogno was on the big blind and threw in chips for a call as well.

Action checked to Barbero on the Q♥ K♣ 10♦ flop and he bet 325,000. Both players called and an 8♦ came on the turn. There was a round of checks and a 2♣ on the river.

Pasini bet 700,000 and Melogno quickly mucked. Barbero on the other hand looked conflicted.

“Sick,” Barbero muttered. “Ace-jack”

He picked up his Q♦ 10♥ , looked at them one more time and then open-mucked them. Pasini turned over a 10♣ but refused to show the other when Barbero asked to see it.

The hand put Pasini up to about 4.25 million while Barbero’s lead dropped to 5.3 million. –AV

9:55pm: Guilherme Castro out in fifth (R$133,960)
Level 27 – Blinds 50,000/100,000 (10,000 ante)

After a bit of dry spell we have another bust out. It was quite an interesting hand too.

It started with a limp from Nacho Barbero under the gun which led to Thiago Grigoletti limping too. It got to Guilherme Castro and he shoved for 830,000 on the button, and then it folded to Joaquin Melogno in the big blind. He made the call, only for Barbero to shove over the top for around 2.7 million! Melogno looked a little disappointed to have to fold.

Barbero – 10♥ 10♣
Castro – Aâ™  9♣

Castro needed an ace to survive but the board ran out 8♥ 3♦ 4♥ 8♣ 9♥ . He paired on the end, but it was the wrong one! Barbero is up to around 3.75 million now. –JS

9:05pm: More for Barbero as he picks off bluff
Level 26 – Blinds 40,000/80,000 (10,000 ante)

Nacho Barbero was under the gun and he made an open to 200,000. It folded to Joaquin Melogno in the big blind and he called to see the 4♣ Q♠ J♥ flop, before checking to the raiser. Barbero continued for 160,000 and Melogno called.

The turn was the 9♣ and it went check-check to the 9♥ river. Now Melogno led out for a big bet of 565,000, which caused Barbero to stop and think. Eventually he made the call though, and Melogno tapped the table and mucked his hand. That meant we never saw Barbero’s hand either, but we did see him raking in 3 million chips with a smile. Melogno drops to 5.9 million. –JS

8:52pm: Barbero Doubles
Level 26 – Blinds 40,000/80,000 (10,000 ante)

Jose Ignacio “Nacho” Barbero is still in the game.

Thiago Grigoletti opened to 200,000 from under the gun and action folded to Barbero on the big blind. Barbero moved all in for 1.1 million and Grigoletti quickly called with a A♠ K♥ . Barbero was flipping with Q♣ Q♦ and then he scored the double up when the board ran 6♦ 4♥ 9♥ 10♥ J♦ .

Barbero doubled up to 2.3 million while Grigoletti dropped to about 3.2 million. –AV

8:40pm: Melogno seizes chip lead from Grigoletti
Level 26 – Blinds 40,000/80,000 (10,000 ante)

It was only a matter of time before a huge pot played out between the two big stacks. It just happened.

Joaquin Melogno made it 165,000 from the cutoff and it folded to Thiago Grigoletti in the small blind. He slowly and carefully counted out a three-bet to 525,000 and tossed it in the middle. Melogno called after the big blind folded.

They saw a 5♣ 6♦ A♥ flop and Grigoletti opted to continue for 375,000. This was going to be a long hand as both players take a long time to act, but Melogno did make the call after a while. That took us to the Q♠ turn and after another couple of minutes both had checked.

The 4♦ completed the board and Grigoletti checked once more. Melogno was done checking though and made a bet of 530,000, which was enough to get his opponent to fold. Melogno now has the chip lead with 6.5 million, while Grigoletti dips to 4.7 million. –JS

8:30pm: Barbero shoves two in a row
Level 26 – Blinds 40,000/80,000 (10,000 ante)

Just going to show how active Joaquin Melogno has been, he’s just opened two hands in a row from the cutoff and the button. There’s just one problem – the short stack of Jose Barbero keeps shoving all-in over his raises and he’s forced to fold.

Two-time LAPT champ Barbero is still the short stack with around 900,000. –JS

Joaquin Melogno and Thiago Grigoletti have been dominating the final table.

Nearly every hand involved at least one of them and a lot of hands involved them both. They also have the two largest stacks of the remaining five players. Grigoletti is currently at about 5.7 million while Melogno has 5.5 million. None of the hands went to showdown as the two giants prefer to settle things without too big a pot.

Jose Ignacio “Nacho” Barbero, who’s hunting his third LAPT title, is the short stack with 800,000. Guilherme Castro is next in line with 1.7 million while Felipe Pasini has about 2.5 million. None of these players have moved all-in since our last update, but blinds are about to go up and make their stacks feel that much smaller. –AV

7:43pm: From a double up to a double elimination!
Level 25 – Blinds 30,000/60,000 (10,000 ante)

Wow, we’ve just lost two players in one hand and Felipe Pasini – the man who just doubled up – has busted them both.

The hand started an open shove from Pedro Madeira for 625,000 from under the gun. In the next seat along was Pasini, and after getting a count he announced he too was all-in. It folded to Elcio Romão in the small blind and he shoved all-in too!

Madeira – K♣ Q♣
Pasini – Jâ™  J♣
Romão – Aâ™  Kâ™

All had strong hands but it was Madeira and Romão (470,000) who were at risk. The flop fell K♦ J♥ 9♦ , giving Pasini a set, but everyone had flopped a piece. The turn came the Q♦ giving Madeira two pair and draws to a full house, while Romão could make a straight with a ten.

Instead the river came the A♣ , so by the end both Madeira and Romão had two pair but they weren’t strong enough to beat Pasini’s set. Madeira had more chips so he’ll be our 6th place finisher for R$102,280, while Romão wins R$75,130 for 7th. Pasini now has 2.7 million. –JS

Thiago Grigoletti has been fairly active at the final table. He’s raising opening a lot of pots and taking most of them down.

But he also recently doubled up Felipe Pasini.

Grigoletti raised to 125,000 again and this time Pasini raised to 660,000 from the small blind. Grigoletti called and showed K♥ J♦ to Pasini’s K♣ Q♦ .

Level 24 – Blinds 25,000/50,000 (5,000 ante)

A cooler flop has seen Bruno Marino hit the rail in eighth place.

The hand started with a 150,000 small blind raise from chip leader Thiago Grigoletti and Marino defended his big blind to see an A♠ A♣ 9♥ flop. Grigoletti continued for 125,000 and Marino insta-called.

To the turn, then. It was the 10â™  and Grigoletti didn’t slow down, now betting 275,000. Again, Marino couldn’t get his calling chips in quick enough.

Finally the 5♣ river completed the board and Grigoletti announced all-in. Marino made his third snap-call but it would turn out to be a big mistake; his A♥ 4â™  three of a kind was trailing Grigoletti’s A♦ Q♦ and that was all she wrote. Grigoletti moved up to 5.2 million. –JS

Then Alisson Piekazewicz lost the majority of his chips a few hands later.

There was about 250,000 in the pot and Piekazewicz was heads-up against Joaquin Melogno on an 8♦ 7♣ 5♥ 2♦ board. Piekazewicz was first to act and he bet 250,000. Melogno called and a 6♠ completed the board.

Piekazewicz bet 400,000 and Melogno raised to 1 million. It was almost enough to put Piekazewicz all in. Almost.

Piekazewicz called and showed Q♥ 9♠ for queen-high while Melogno showed 10♣ 9♣ for the rivered straight.

The hand left Piekazewicz with just 25,000 and they were all-in the following hand. Melogno was the only caller and both players showed surprisingly good hands for the circumstances. Piekazewicz turned over 4♥ 4♠ while Melogno tabled 9♥ 9♠ .

Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero is heading in the right direction if he wants to become the first and only three-time LAPT champ. He just took a nice pot down from Rafael Caiffa, who kicked the hand off with a 63,000 button open. Barbero defended his big blind and the two saw a Jâ™  J♥ 6♣ flop. Caiffa made a 71,000 c-bet but Barbero wanted to play for more, raising it up to 170,000. Caiffa called.

The dealer burned and turned the 5♥ and now Barbero slowed down, checking. Caiffa seized the betting lead with a 129,000 stab. Barbero called.

The board was completed by the 8â™  and both checked pretty quickly. Barbero rolled over the J♦ 9♣ for trips and that was good as Caiffa mucked. Barbero is up to 1.4 million, Caiffa dips to 500,000. –JS

3:50pm: Make that 15
Level 22 – Blinds 15,000/30,000 (4,000 ante)

Fernando Camargo didn’t last long at his new table.

Camargo moved all-in when he got to the small blind and Guilherme Castro called from the big blind.

It was a solid flip when Camargo showed K♥ J♦ to Castro’s 9♥ 9♣ , but the 7♦ Q♣ 9♦ flop quickly changed that. Then a 9â™  came on the turn to leave Camargo drawing dead. The river was an inconsequential 5♦ and Castro’s quad 9s took down the pot.

Castro chipped up to 2.9 million and took over the lead. –AV

3:24pm: Camargo bluffs away his stack
Level 22 – Blinds 15,000/30,000 (4,000 ante)

Luiz Camargo has come across a little erratic and crazy throughout this tournament; we’ve heard him shouting, seen him dancing, and watched him shake hands with just about everyone over the past few days. But unfortunately his run here has come to an end in a hand in which he attempted a big bluff.

Picking up the action on the J♣ 2♣ 9♥ board, Guilherme Castro check-called a 110,000 bet and saw the turn, which came the 5♠ . Both Castro and Camargo checked it and the river fell the 7♣ . Castro checked a final time and Camargo shoved immediately for 500,000 exactly.

Castro was a little puzzled by this. Perhaps Camargo’s story didn’t make a whole lot of sense to him. After a couple of minutes thinking time (Carmago dancing the entire time) he made the call and was delighted to see that Camargo was bluffing with the 10â™  3â™  for absolute air. Castro had the 9♦ Q♦ for a second pair and that was good for the win. –JS

3:11pm: Level up
Level 22 – Blinds 15,000/30,000 (4,000 ante)

The first level of the day is done and we’re down to 17 players. One more elimination and we’ll be down to the final two tables. –AV

3:08pm: A double for Duarte
Level 21 – Blinds 12,000/24,000 (3,000 ante)

Elcio Romão raised to 50,000 the button and Luiz Duarte moved all-in for 235,000 from the small blind. Felipe Costa also went all-in, but for 768,000. Romão folded and we had a showdown.

Duarte showed 10♥ 10♦ and Costa turned over 7♣ 7♥ . The board ran 8♦ K♦ 8â™  K♥ 6â™  and Duarte doubled up to 530,000 while Costa dipped to about the same amount. –AV

3pm: Broken heart for Valetim
Level 21 – Blinds 12,000/24,000 (3,000 ante)

We’ve lost another player, and Elcio Romão has played executioner once again. Renato Valentim got his short stack in with the 6♥ 6♦ against Romão’s Kâ™  9â™  , but the board paired Romão’s nine and sent Valetim home early. 17 left now. –JS

2:50pm: Down to 18
Level 21 – Blinds 12,000/24,000 (3,000 ante)

Nicolas Malandre started that day with about half-a-million chips and dropped down to 309,000 when he decided to move all-in from the hijack.

Action folded to Bruno Marino on the big blind and he called. Malandre turned over K♣ J♥ for his tournament life but Marino had him dominated with A♦ J♣ .

The Aâ™  6♥ 6♣ flop gave Marino an ace and a 2♥ on turn sealed the deal. The river brought a 3♦ and another elimination. Malandre hit the rail while Marino chipped up to 1.67 million. –AV

2:36pm: Three-way all-in busts Ribas, trebles Romão
Level 21 – Blinds 12,000/24,000 (3,000 ante)

There’s certainly be no hesitancy to getting chips in the middle so far today. In fact, three players just announced all-in in the same hand!

It started with an open shove from Elcio Romão for around 300,000 after he lost that pot below. The player to his left, Renan Ribas, then called all-in for his short 250,000 stack, only for Luiz Duarte to also call with the biggest stack.

Romão – 7â™  7♦
Ribas – 8♥ 8♦
Duarte – A♥ Q♥

Needless to say, the K♥ 7♥ K♣ flop was very very good for Romão, leaving the others drawing very thin. Ribas now needed to hit an eight to survive but the board ran out 6♦ and 7♣ to give Romão quads. Ribas exited in 20th, Duarte dropped to 302,000, and Romão just about trebled up to 920,000. –JS

2:25pm: Grigoletti over 2.5m
Level 21 – Blinds 12,000/24,000 (3,000 ante)

Thiago Grigoletti just keeps on rising.

While he was still stacking up his chips after eliminating Oscar Barriga, Grigoletti took a big pot off of Elcio Romão.

Grigoletti opened to 52,000 from the cutoff and Romão called from the small blind. The flop came 6♦ 7♠ K♥ and Romão checked. Grigoletti bet 52,000 and Romão called, bringing the6♠ on the turn. Romão checked again and this time Grigoletti upped the bet to 200,000. Romão called and an A♠ completed the board.

Romão checked again and then called Grigoletti’s final bet of 125,000. Romão turned over Kâ™  Q♣ for a pair of kings but Grigoletti showed 9♣ 6♣ for trip sixes.

Romão dropped to about 300,000 while Grigoletti spent the next few minutes piling up his massive stack of about 2.6 million. –AV

2:14pm: Barriga gone in 21st
Level 21 – Blinds 12,000/24,000 (3,000 ante)

It’s been a short day for Oscar Barriga. He came into play as the short stack and when it folded to him in the cutoff he looked down at Aâ™  J♣ and moved his 154,000 into the middle. It folded to chip leader Thiago Grigoletti in the big blind and he snap-called with the A♣ Q♦ .

Barriga paired his jack on the Q♥ J♦ 5♥ flop – only problem is that Grigoletti also paired his queen. The turn and river weren the 4♦ and 10♣ and Barriga now has to find another way to spend his Thursday afternoon. –JS

1pm: Let’s find a winner, shall we?

Just 21 players remain here at the Sheraton WTC Hotel in São Paulo, all of whom are looking to capture the last ever LAPT Main Event title before it becomes known as either a PokerStars Championship or Festival next year.

A few storylines have kept us intrigued so far. While the chip leader coming in to today are Thiago Grigoletti with 1.981 million, all eyes right now are on the man who finished the night second in chips. Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero is already a two-time LAPT champion (one of four), but is poised to become the first and only three-time champ in LAPT history. He comes into today with 1.489 million.
