Written by Triccia David

Unlike big fields where many familiar faces are scattered throughout the room, small fields that are filled with poker pros are quite a treat for fans and newbies because they get to witness what poker is all about. That is, no friends at the poker table, no mercy at the poker table. Everyone is a target.

Resuming its second day of poker festivities at the City of Dreams Manila, the PokerStars LIVE Manila Megastack 2 turned up some of Asia’s heavy hitters and frequent flyers for Event #2, a PHP10,000 No Limit Holdem Event.

With a tight field of 28 gunners on the roster, and with each one holstered with a healthy starting stack of 15,000, it was no surprise to see Filipino players Gie Angelo Reyes, Flo Campomanes, and the lone female player in the field, Regie Ann Delos Reyes, start the day in full attack mode, seizing every opportunity to chip up and dominate while the blinds were low. Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang was also in attendance, along with Kai Paulsen, Yi Won Lee (currently 6th place on the Asia Player of the Year Leaderboard), and Australian player Michaelangelo Longabela who returned from last night’s victory hoping to pair up his trophy.

By the end of the night, all of them would miss the mark and would have to go home empty-handed.

Not the case however for Matthias Thorsten Wolf of Denmark. Wolf remained in stealth mode with his mid-ranged stack at the final table until play was down to the money for the final four players. Although Filipino poker pro Martin Corpuz held the chip lead for most of the final table, he took some big hits until Wolf finally dealt him his last hand. Wolf then proceeded to eliminate Filipino player Nemesio Alegado to face one more opponent, Singaporean player Wei Shyong Chen.

With a 4:1 chip lead, Chen wasn’t able to catch up. On the final hand, Wolf snap-called a preflop shove by Chen and although he was behind with his K-Q versus Chen’s A-J, the board was generous to Wolf giving him top two pair and the victory. Wolf claimed the first prize purse of PHP105,100 plus the second trophy of the Megastack Manila 2.

Congratulations to Matthias Thorsten Wolf! He is definitely on a roll having also placed 3rd at Event #1.
