Manila Megastack 7: The Preview

May 25, 2017

Manila Megastack 7 (May 29-June 4) kicks off on Monday at PokerStars LIVE Manila and it’s time to take a look at what’s arguably the fastest growing poker series in Asia.

The seven-day schedule features a ₱30,000 Main Event which comes with an ₱8 million prize pool guarantee.

The Main Event’s inaugural run in January 2015 had a modest 61 runners and ₱1.3 million prize pool. Those figures have swollen to 646 entrants and ₱14.1 million (283k USD) when Siong Boon Heng, the reigning champion, won the Main Event last December. In fact, Heng’s top prize of ₱2,771,000 was more than twice as much as the original Manila Megastack’s entire prize pool!

There’s also a new twist to the Main Event this season where the two champions will also win a package to the 2017 Asia Championship of Poker (October 13-29) which includes entry to the HK$11,000 (~₱70,000) Megastack Championship. event plus hotel accommodations.

Besides the Main Event, there are 18 other Official Asia Player of Year events on hand.

The series launches with the ₱10,000 Kick-off (₱2 million guarantee) on May 29 and has three starting flights taking place at 12pm, 4pm, and 8pm. Last time, the two-day event had 489 runners and is poised to crack 500-mark this time around.

Larger buy-in events — such as the ₱50,000 NLH Freezeout and ₱100,000 Single Day High Roller — will also make a return. The two events previously combined for 133 players and ₱7.9 million in prize money. The 30-second shot clock is making its first appearance at PokerStars LIVE Manila for the SDHR.
