PCA 2012: David Labchuk wins Canada Cup

January 09, 2012

David Labchuk is used to making adjustments. He does it for a living. The chiropractor from Calgary spends his professional time cracking, manipulating, and working his patients back to normal.

“I don’t know what it’s going to be like back in Calgary,” he said. “Everyone is going to be asking for free stuff.”

It was a joke. Though soft-spoken, Labchuk has a dry wit. That side of him started coming out even more after he won the PokerStars Canada Cup this afternoon. Standing alongside his friend Ashley, his sister, and his brother-in-law, Labchuk accepted the Canada Cup, congratulations, and more than $40,000 in cash. After using $530 to battle a field of Canadians online, Labchuk and eight others traveled here to fight for the title live at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure.

“It’s not as big, say, as the water slide race I won yesterday against all the other people,” he said. “But it’s up there. It’s definitely up there.”

Another joke. Though he has cashed bigger before (his biggest was a $54,000 cash at this year’s WSOP main event), this is Labchuk’s first live first place finish.

“This is one of my favorites, for sure,” he said. “It will also depend on that the $25,000 ticket. You know, that could be huge.”

That’s no joke. In addition to the forty grand in cash, Labchuk won a $25,000 seat in this year’s PCA High Roller. He will be up against some of the best players in the world and playing for a gigantic prize pool. A min-cash in that event alone could win him as much as he won today.

In the meantime, Labchuk and his mini-entourage have a few days to relax before that $25,000 ticket gets put in play.

“I think we’re going to go snorkeling, hang out at the beach, and probably go out for a nice dinner tonight,” Labchuk said.

After that, it’s time to start making adjustments again, this time adjusting from playing a $530 event to one worth $25,000.

Congratulations to David Labchuk for winning the PokerStars Canada Cup.
