PCA 2012: Goldilocks. The Bear, & 140 characters

January 10, 2012

This story should have Barry Greenstein listed as a co-author, because, in all fairness, he wrote half of it.

Greenstein is doing very well in the 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event, but you don’t need me to tell you that. Greenstein will tell you the whole story himself, as it happens, 140 characters at a time.

You likely already know Greenstein is a writer. His book “Ace on the River” has been popular for years. In recent years, Greenstein has taken to a new form of writing. More than 40,000 people follow him on Twitter, and today those followers are getting quite a show. There may not be a player out there who gives such good updates on how he’s doing in a tournament as Greenstein. Like a social media version of Goldilocks and those bears, Greenstein doesn’t update too much and he doesn’t update too little. It’s just right.

Greenstein hard at work

Take for instance the following seven updates, beginning with his final post last night and ending with the latest from today.

  • End of day 2. Finished weakly with 102k. 185 left. Avg is 175k. 25BB starting tomorrow. 160 make the money. #PCA

  • Early surge. Won every hand I’ve played. Up to 180k. Average is 202k. We’re just in the money with 160 left. 45BB

  • Made a bad play not bluffing a river but then doubled with JJ vs 99 to 280k. 145 left. Avg is 225k. 56BB

  • Had my first race of the event with 1010 vs AK. Won it the ugly way with a flush on the river. 125 left. Avg is 260k. I have 390k. 78BB

  • Just got moved to the secondary feature table with Faraz Jaka, Erik Cajelais, and other good players. Still 380k. 112 left.

  • Tough table. Bad cards. 96 left. Average is 335k. That’s what I have. 42BB

  • Lost a couple pots but then doubled through Faraz with AA vs A10. 85 left. Average is 375k. I have 530k. 66BB
  • See? In less than 200 words, Greenstein has managed to tell you the whole story of his day, the big hands, and everything you might want to know.

Barry Greenstein doing our jobs for us

Our job at these events is partly to update you on the action. We strive for accuracy, primary sources, and the most relevant info. That’s what we do, and we like to think we’re pretty good at it. In fact, we would suggest that if you want to follow the other 75 players in the final stages of the tournament, you do it right here on these pages. However, when it comes to Greenstein’s status, although we are loathe to admit it, you’re better off just reading his Twitter feed.

So, open up another browser window and head on over to Greenstein’s Twitter feed. It’s not too hard to remember: @BarryGreenstein.
