BSOP Millions São Paulo

Brazilian poker player Fábio Luiz Bonatto has been playing poker for a dozen years. He’s cashed at events at the Brazilian Series of Poker for the last six, and even has SCOOP title (in 2016) and Sunday Million title (in 2018) to his credit.

But in late 2019 he won the biggest tournament of his life at the BSOP Millions in São Paulo. In less than three hours, Bonatto topped a 26-player field in a PokerStars VIP tournament to win a Platinum Pass and entry into the 2020 PokerStars Players Championship in Barcelona.

Bonatto had to overcome the formidable Fabio Freitas — 12th-place finisher in the 2014 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event — to earn the victory.

“It’s a dream come true!” said Bonatto afterwards. “Since PokerStars announced the PSPC [in Barcelona], I imagined myself playing the tournament. I can’t believe this became a reality!”

Hailing from Curtiba, Bonatto began playing in home games with friends before eventually graduating to find success both online and live. But he well knows the competition he’ll face in August 2020 will be even stiffer that what he’s faced before, and is ready to put in the hours to come to Barcelona as prepared as he can.

“Now I want to study hard, study a little more,” he told Sergio Prado of PokerStars Blog Brazil, noting how it will be “a little different field, so you have to prepare the play.”

Bonatto has played the $10,000 WSOP Main Event before, the biggest buy-in he’s ever tried. “The buy-in is important, of course,” he says. “It’s going to change a bit for sure… [but] you have to prepare and enjoy it.”
