With an online name like “jockAA42”, you could be forgiven for thinking Michael Mirallez was from Scotland. But this 42-year-old, who chose the name when he signed up for PokerStars early this year, is from Saint-Etienne, in France. The name, though, was very lucky indeed.
Mirallez entered the “Dare To Dream” Sign-Up Freeroll when he unveiled “jockAA42” having joined PokerStars.fr. And he then went on to win the event, bagging a Platinum Pass to the PokerStars Players No Limit Hold’em Championship. Remarkably, he has never played a live tournament before and is preparing to make his debut in the biggest event on the PokerStars calendar of the year.
He is not a complete newcomer to poker, however. Mirallez says he took up poker around 10 years ago and mainly plays cash games, once booking an €1,800 profit from a session. That’s outstripped by his best sports betting score. He once won €2,800 betting on football.
As a poker spectator, he names Gus Hansen, Phil Ivey and Daniel Negreanu as his favourite players, but is quick to nominate another trio as even dearer to his heart. “What’s your biggest achievement in life?” we asked. “My three daughters,” Mirallez said.
