As I sit down to write, around 7,000 poker players are preparing for their shot at the biggest weekly online tournament in the world: The PokerStars Sunday Million. Since online poker took off, Sundays have grown to be the battle ground for the largest tournaments with the most significant prize pools. It’s when the majority, casuals and amateurs, can spend a few hours relaxing at home trying to bag a significant cash prize before starting a new week at work on Monday morning. With the Sunday Million, that first-place cash prize is well over $150,000.

And that really would be something worth bragging about at the office.

PokerStars had been running a $215 No Limit Hold’em weekly tournament on Sundays for some time before re-branding it to the Sunday Million on March 5, 2006. On that day 5,893 runners played for a prize pool of $1,178,600, with player ‘aaaaaaaa’ from the USA winning the title (either he had a stuck keyboard or was stuck for a name when registering his PokerStars account).

Since then the Sunday Million has grown in popularity. As part of the PokerStars 10th Anniversary celebrations, there will be a special $10,000,000 Sunday Million on December 18 with a guaranteed $2,000,000 for first place. Yes, that’s $2 million bucks! Satellites are running now, so see the 10th Anniversary page to find out more.

In case you can’t play, each week PokerStars Blog will publish a full report of the Sunday Million tournament. See here for last week’s report when tost89 won $170,000.

Sundays on PokerStars is not just about the Sunday Million, there are a host of tournaments to try:

Sunday Kickoff, $109, 08:00 ET, $75,000 guaranteed
Sunday Warm-Up, $215, 11:00 ET, $500,000
Sunday Rebuy, $109, 12:00 ET, $200,000
Sunday Storm, $11, 13:30 ET, $200,000
Sunday Million, $215, 14:30 ET, $1,000,000
Sunday 500, $530, 15:30 ET, $250,000

Sunday 6-Max, $162, 17:00 ET, $60,000

Good luck if you are playing or trying to satellite your way in to today’s Sunday Million tournament.
