The high buy-in version of SCOOP events are smaller affairs but their fields are the toughest you’ll find. It takes a special kind of player to enjoy playing split pot poker so the Pot Limit Omaha/8 event was only 125 players deep but packed with talent.

Event 27-H had a $1,050 price tag for some 5-Card PLO/8 with unlimited rebuys for the first 90 minutes. Those players combined for 69 rebuys and 102 add-ons to create a $296,000 prize pool. The final 18 players were set to earn a piece of it with the winner’s take just under $77,000.

The two-day event paused on the final table bubble with just seven players remaining. Team PokerStars’ Eugene Katchalov was leading the overnight counts but plenty of skill standing between him and the title.

It still took 23 rounds of hand-for-hand action to set the final table after the restart. With the depth of stacks, it took two big hands to finally get them there. It was all done when SilentPurple raised pre-flop and TheHood called in the big blind with A♠ A♣ J♣ 10♣ 2♣ ahead of A♦ K♦ K♠ 4♦ 4♣ . The Aces were temporarily good but TheHood made his flush on the river to send SilentPurple out in 7th.

As one would expect with such a talented field, the final table was stacked with former champions. Four players already had past COOP titles led by Luke “lb6121” Schwartz and lukro8 with two SCOOPs of success. Eugene Katchalov was the representative from Team PokerStars and looking to add to his WCOOP title along with Fred_Brink.

Seat 6: TheHood (255,071 in chips)

Fred_Brink gets wheeled out, eliminated in 6th

Despite the deep stacks, Fred_Brink found a hand to get all his chips in the middle against lacabanhita and TheHood in a huge three-way all-in. TheHood and Fred_Brink looked good for the low with A♣ 10â™  9♣ 6♥ 2♥ and A♦ K♥ K♣ 5♦ 2â™  after the 8♦ 6â™  4♥ flop against lacabanhita’s big pair, second best low Aâ™  A♥ Q♦ 8♣ 3♦ .

They swapped places with the 2♣ turn when lacabanhita took the lead for the low while TheHood picked up a second pair and Fred_Brink was drawing then to stay alive. Keeping with the low board theme, the virtual dealer dropped 5♠ on the river to give lacabanhita a wheel to send Fred_Brink out in 6th place for $13,320 and leave TheHood as the short stack.

lukro8 gets chopped up, eliminated in 5th

TheHood wasted no time trying for a double, moving all-in on the very next hand holdingA♣ A♦ 10♦ 6♦ 6♣ with lukro8 and lacabanhita coming along for the ride as the shortest stack.

lukro8 tabled Aâ™  8â™  7♣ 5♣ 2♣ and lacabanhita showed A♥ Q♣ J♥ 8♣ 2♦ before the J♣ 7♥ 2♥ flop. lacabanhita flopped top and bottom while all had a low draw. The 5♦ turn and 3â™  river gave TheHood a better low and lacabanhita’s two-pair Jacks and Deuces held up to split the pot and send lukro8 out in 5th place for $19,240.

Katchalov flushed, eliminated in 4th

Katchalov had to be a favorite at the start of the final table with a deep stack and big results in the past. Nothing went right from the start of the final table and he was the shortest with four remaining.

In the big blind he called a pre-flop raise from TheHood to see the Q♣ 9♣ 7♥ flop. TheHood led out for 60,000 and Katchalov moved all-in for just 21,641 more to get a call.

Katchalov: A♦ 9♦ 5♦ 5♣ 2♣
TheHood: A♥ A♣ J♣ J♥ 6♦

Katchalov was in trouble with second pair and his flush draw was second best. The really bad for Katchalov came on the J♠ turn to leave the WSOP/WPT champion drawing dead to the 9♥ river. He would have to wait to add the second leg of a COOP Triple Crown with his 4th place finish for $25,160.

lacabanhita runs out of time, eliminated in 3rd

Action slowed down after Katchalov’s knockout. Really really slowed down. The three remaining players settled in for the long grind and it stayed that way for 90 long minutes. Most of the credit goes to the choppy nature of the game but they also had plenty of ammunition to toss around.

lacabanhita was the short player than entire time and had a few chances to get back in the game before having to settle for just half the pot. He was down to 80,000 when he raised pre-flop and TheHood came along to the K♣ 10♣ 3♠ flop and moved all-in after TheHood bet out.

TheHood: A♠ Q♠ J♣ J♦ 10♦
lacabanhita: A♥ 8♣ 6♦ 6♠ 4♠

TheHood was ahead with the Jacks and the 3♥ turn left lacabanhita looking for one of the two remaining Sixes in the deck. The river cameJ♠ to give TheHood unnecessary boat to send lacabanhita out in 3rd place for $38,480.

Seat 6: TheHood (459955 in chips)
Blinds: 3,000/6,000

Let’s make a deal

The two players paused action after lacabanhita’s elimination to discuss a deal. The were provided the chop numbers and quickly agreed to terms. Schwartz was guaranteed $65,268 and TheHood would earn $59,491 with $4,000 left behind for the eventual winner.

Even though they were playing for just $4,000 after their deal, the two battled for nearly an hour with Schwartz never giving up the chip advantage. As they approached another break, TheHood put his stack at risk after a K♦ J♦ 9♠ flop.

TheHood: A♥ Q♥ Q♠ 10♠ 5♠
Schwartz: A♣ K♣ Q♣ J♥ 10♥

Schwartz had a slight statistical lead in the hand though a chop was the most likely outcome with both holding the same straight with the same straight redraw. The tiny edge for Schwartz was his top two pair giving him a full house draw.

The 3♣ changed nothing but the spiked J♣ filled the boat to send TheHood out in 2nd place in a tough hand, picking up his agreed upon $59,491 for the effort. Schwartz was catapulted to his third career SCOOP title with his past results also coming in 6-max variants. He defeated a small but talented to field to earn the victory along with $69,268 and a sweet SCOOP watch.
