SCOOP 2013: Ben “KidCardiff6” Warrington wins HU High-Roller Event #40-M ($2,100 NLH Heads-Up, High-Roller)

May 27, 2013

Heads up tournaments always bring out some of the top players and the final HU event of SCOOP 2013 was of the High-Roller variety. Buy-ins were raised 10 fold across the board for each of the three levels of tournaments for some big money prizes. The Medium event brought 247 grinders for the tournament creating a prize-pool just shy of $500,000. Some of the best players in the world were around until the very end creating to exciting matches worthy of any event.

The final 32 players in the tournament would all make the money and one victory from moving on to Day 2 of the tournament. The first player in the round to advance was Team PokerStar’s Daniel “KidPoker” Negreanu and it took hi just five hands to dispatch Dan “Danny98765” Smith. Negreanu was in the middle of winning his first SCOOP title in Event #39-H when Smith raised all-in for 8,775 (players began match with 10,000) on the Q♥7♠K♥6♥10♠ board. After some deliberation, Negreanu made the call and was in the money with a flush against bottom pair.

KidPoker: “haha yikes”

The most interesting match during the Round of 32 appeared to between top players in Paul “paulgees81” Volpe and Aaron ‘aejones’ Jones. The rail was probably anticipating an exciting back and forth match but this one ended just as quickly as Negreanu’s in the previous round, this time in a cooler turned tough beat. Volpe was just a few chips ahead of Jones (10,059 to 9,941) when a steady round of pre-flop raises saw Vople put in a 7th bet for all the chips. The cards were revealed and Jones was in a perfect position to advance with K♥K♠ versus Q♠Q♦. The 9♥J♠5♥ was safe for Jones but the Q♥ was a rough one. Volpe still had outs to dodge but advanced to Day 2 and a bigger payday with the 4♦ river.

Negreanu was unable to win a 2nd SCOOP title when he lost his first match of the day to caaaaamel in the Round of 16, after which caaaaamel made into the final four by defeating €urop€an who called an early all-in with Ace-high versus Jacks. Volpe’s day ended in the Round of 8 at the hands of Ben “KidCardiff6” Warrington and the longest match of that round went nearly 90 minutes before Rens “Rens02” Feenstra defeated Vladimir “GVOZDIKA55” Shchemelev with flopped two pair holding K♠4♠ versus A♥K♥ to set the Final Four matches.

Rens02 was once again in a long battle in the semis against Warrington, a roller-coaster ride until KidCardiff6 took command late to move on to the final match. The semi-final match between Vladimir “GVOZDIKA55” Shchemelev and caaaaamel was only a little shorter in terms of time and hands played, but the final hand was for all the chips with both players still relatively close. Shchemelev 4-bet shoved with a pair of ducks and was snapped called by caaaaamel with A♣A♥ to set the table for the final match.

The two remaining players immediately chopped 1st and 2nd place money leaving $6,000 on the table for the winner along with the SCOOP title and sharp looking watch. KidCardiff6 and caaaaamel exchanged the lead several times early in the match with few big hands to give either a large lead until the final hand played out while still in the 2nd level. A raising battle began with KidCardiff6 min-raising the button and ended with caaaaamel putting the final 5,754 in the middle with the 7th bet. caaaaamel was the aggressor but was dominated holding A♠Q♣ versus A♦K♥. As fitting for such a volatile event, the flop gave both a huge sweat when it came down 7♠8♠10♠. The tournament ended when KidCardiff6 faded 11 outs twice (plus a few chop outs on the river) to eliminate caaaaamel in 2nd place and win his first SCOOP title for $91,920.
