Pot Limit Omaha is already considered an action game, but when you combine it into a Turbo structure and add PokerStars’ revolutionary ZOOM format, then it provides a cracking few hours of poker entertainment. It took just over four hours to reduce a field of over five thousand to a lone champion as Bulgaria’s FoRiu89 collected the top prize and the SCOOP title on a whirlwind, and very international, final table.

A massive field of 5,419 turned out for Event #32-L $27 Pot Limit Omaha Turbo ZOOM, to confirm the growing popularity of PLO at the lower limits. They formed a prize pool of $133,036.45 which was over three times the advertised guarantee.

Team PokerStars Pros Marcel Luske, Chad Brown, David Williams, Caio Pessagno, George Danzer, Fatima De Melo, Henrique Pinho, Lex Veldhuis, Andre Coimbra, Martin Hrubý, Mickey Petersen, Fredy Torres, Bertrand Grospellier and Nacho Barbero were all amongst the starters but fell short of the money.

The top 720 places would be paid with a min-cash worth $42.57, but it would be another red spade falling painfully short of the money as former SCOOP title winner George Lind was the bubble boy in 721st place.

Bubble is no fun for George Lind

Two Team PokerStars members made the money with Marcin Horecki (570th – $46.56) and Japanese WSOP bracelet winner Naoya Kihara (237th – $71.83) the only red spades to cash.

When a short-stacked pokerbossie1’s two pair fell to the ace-high flush of badalhas, the official SCOOP final table of nine was formed:

Final Table Line up
Seat 1: FoRiu89 (7,234,824 in chips)
Seat 2: mitsakos21 (4,944,388 in chips)
Seat 3: Funeraler (502,002 in chips)
Seat 4: ace201220 (1,041,822 in chips)
Seat 5: N0b0dy (2,322,920 in chips)
Seat 6: VernonH (2,332,156 in chips)
Seat 7: badalhas (4,442,977 in chips)
Seat 8: Alexx_N (483,613 in chips)
Seat 9: JeffBaas (3,790,298 in chips)

There was a fairly large chip discrepancy around the table as the final table kicked off with the blinds at 150,000/300,000. FoRiu89 held a commanding chip lead with mitsakos21, badalhas and JeffBaas also very well placed, while the pressure was on short stacks Alexx_N and Funeraler.

However the short stacks fought back with ace201220’s aces securing a double up, before Funeraler, Alexx_N and N0b0dy did likewise.

Funeraler was still on the short stack and couldn’t make it two in a row after committing preflop with Aâ™  4♣ 4â™  Q♣ against JeffBaas’ K♦ 4♥ 9♥ 8♦ . The board fell 6♣ K♥ 10♥ 5♦ 7â™  with Funeraler unable to improve on a pair of fours as JeffBaas ended with a straight to secure the pot and eliminate Funeraler in 9th place for $1,064.29.

Just three hands later and we would see the floodgates open with three eliminations in three consecutive hands.

First it was Alexx_N who moved all in from under the gun for less than three big blinds with 4♣ Kâ™  Aâ™  7♣ . Action passed to N0b0dy who isolated with A♥ 9♦ 4â™  A♣ . The board rolled off K♥ J♦ A♦ 4♦ Q♥ with N0b0dy’s set of aces proving too strong for Alexx_N who tabled two pair. Alexx_N picked up $1,662.95 for 8th place.

Very next hand and VernonH moved all in from the button for a little over three big blinds with J♥ 2♦ 3♦ A♦ as JeffBaas committed to call from the big blind with 8♦ 9♥ 5♠ 10♠ . The board landed 2♠ J♠ Q♣ 6♠ K♥ to deliver a flush for JeffBass to remove VernonH in 7th place for $2,993.32.

Another hand and another elimination, as ace201220 was a little unlucky:

Queens into kings was enough to send ace201220 to the rail in 6th place for $4,323.68.

We then saw the biggest pot of the tournament unfold when N0b0dy three-bet jammed A♣ K♣ 9♦ Q♠ and mitsakos21 made the call with 10♠ 6♣ 10♥ 9♣ . The board fell Q♣ 6♦ A♠ 8♥ A♥ to give N0b0dy a big double up into the tournament chip lead.

It was a blow that mitsakos21 was unable to recover from as the very next hand mitsakos21 was all in with 5♦ J♣ Jâ™  6â™  only to run into JeffBaas’ Aâ™  A♦ 9â™  4♦ . The K♦ 7â™  K♥ 6♣ 4♣ board offered no help to leave JeffBaas’ aces and kings to take the pot and eliminate mitsakos21 in 5th place for $5,654.04.

Again we saw back-to-back knockouts as badalhas was all in preflop next hand. Both JeffBaas and FoRiu89 made the call, and after a bet on the flop, the two players checked down the turn and river on a Q♣ 3♣ 9♠ 10♦ 2♥ board. Both live players tabled two pair with queens and nines which was too strong for badalhas who mucked and departed in 4th place for $7,516.55.

It had been carnage so far on this final table, so the remaining three players were quick to pause the clock and lock in a deal before variance struck! The chip stacks were virtually even at the time:

Seat 1: FoRiu89 (8,728,481 in chips)
Seat 5: N0b0dy (8,591,680 in chips)
Seat 9: JeffBaas (9,774,839 in chips)

It’s not often you see players agree to an even money chop rather than chip chop or ICM, but such was the volatility of this tournament, that JeffBaas was happy to chop things up evenly, despite holding a small lead. JeffBaas did have one condition though, as he requested an extra $1, saying that it was for his dog! FoRiu89 obliged with the $1 and deal was done, with the cards back in the air with $800 and the SCOOP watch up for grabs.

The players passed a few chips around the table, before a telling hand saw JeffBaas catch a fortunate double up through N0b0dy:

N0b0dy was now short-stacked and all in moments later with J♣ K♣ 10♥ Q♣ . FoRiu89 gambled from the big blind with 4♦ 6♣ 8♠ Q♦ and paired up on the river on the A♥ 3♦ 3♠ A♠ 6♦ board. Aces and sixes for FoRiu89 was enough as N0b0dy was bundled out in 3rd place for a post-deal amount of $15,496.07.

Heads-up chip counts
Seat 1: FoRiu89 (13,945,322 in chips)
Seat 9: JeffBaas (13,149,678 in chips)

It was virtually dead even in chips as heads-up play commenced but it was
FoRiu89 who gained the early advantage, firing three barrels and forcing a river fold on a board of 7♠ 9♣ 7♣ K♦ 5♦ .

Two hands later and fireworks erupted on a flop of 2♠ 10♥ J♣ in a rare post-flop hand. FoRiu89 had called preflop from the big blind and checked the action over to JeffBaas who bet out. FoRiu89 clicked it back with a min-raise to put JeffBaas all in. JeffBaas obliged and opened Q♣ Q♠ J♦ 4♦ for an overpair of queens but FoRiu89 had flopped a set of tens with 10♦ 10♣ 4♥ 9♠ . The 3♦ turn and A♠ river completed the board to see JeffBaas fall in 2nd place for $15,497.07 as FoRiu89 became the newest SCOOP champion, pocketing $16,295.07 in prize money!
