SCOOP 2014: joe1224 with patient, yet stunning victory in Event #18-L ($27 NL Turbo, Super-KO)

May 10, 2014

Anything can happen in a Turbo event with mercilessly escalating blinds. One moment you’re dominating with two-thirds of the remaining chips in play, but a couple of orbits later, you’re helplessly tumbling from the penthouse to the outhouse. That’s the unpredictable brutality of poker. For the majority of the final table in Event #18-L, it appeared as no one was going to stop Croatia’s kelavi, who amassed a monstrous stack. However, with three to go, fate intervened and variance came a knockin’. kelavi lost a ginormous advantage and busted in third place, thereby setting up a heads-up affair between joe1224 and JCSavedMe11. When the dust settled, Taiwan’s joe1224 stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight as SCOOP’s newest champion. This is joe1224’s second “COOP” crown. Last September, joe1224 won a WCOOP bracelet.

SCOOP Event #18-L $27 NL Hold’em [6-Max, Turbo, Super-Knockout] attracted 16,528 runners. The total prize pool was $429,728.00. Each buy-in was split 50/50 and $13 each went toward a bounty pool and regular pool. The top 2,100 places paid out with $29,426.83 set aside to the eventual champion.

With five-minute level and a short-handed format, this SCOOP event progressed quickly. In three hours, only 200 players remained. A final table was reached in a little more than 4.5 hours. A champion was determined in a brisk 5:17.

GoodBluffKid eliminated in 6th place

Despite the uppity pace of the tournament, the final six slugged it out for almost three levels before someone busted. Short-stacked GoodBluffKid bombed it all-in for 6,897,540 and kelavi insta-called. Cooler time. GoodBluffKid made a valiant final stand with 10♥10♠ but unfortunately ran into kelavi’s A♦A♠. The board finished up 9♦6♦2♠7♦10♦. Although GoodBluffKid rivered a set of tens, kelavi rivered a four-flush to win the pot. kelavi also collected a bounty worth $13. GoodBluffKid became the first player to exit at the final table and won $2,578.36 for a sixth-place finish.

With five remaining, kelavi snagged the lead with 27.7M.

Miesozerny eliminated in 5th place

Miesozerny opened to 2.8M, kelavi moved all-in for 23,021,300, and Miesozerny called all-in for 14,281,490. Classic race. Miesozerny took A♠K♥ into battle against kelavi’s J♦J♣. The flop was A♦5♥3♥ and Miesozerny seized the lead with a pair of Aces. The J♠ spiked on the turn and kelavi improved to a set of Jacks. The river was the 6♦. kelavi won the pot and collected a $13 bounty on Miesozerny. For a fifth-place performance, Miesozerny earned $4,297.28.

With four to go, kelavi chipped up to 42M, while flemse32 brought up the rear with 6.1M.

With blinds rapidly escalating, action was paused to discuss a deal. Croatia’s kelavi held an overwhelming lead with 49M, followed by joe1224 (16M), JCSavedMe11 (11.6M), and flemse32 (4.5M). The original deal numbers were shot down, but after some negotiations, they agreed on different terms as follows: kelavi ($22,193.72), joe1224 ($18,936.15), JCSavedMe11 ($15,404.67), and flemse32 ($10,790.77). They also had to leave $4,000 on the table to the eventual winner.

flemse32 eliminated in 4th place

With a deal in place, we saw a quickie bustout. joe1224 min-raised to 2.8M, flemse32 bombed it all-in for 3,189,964, and joe1224 called. flemse32 was in trouble with J♦2♥ against joe1224’s A♥9♥. The board ran out K♠Q♥5♥2♠9♦. Although flemse32 turned a pair of deuces to take the lead, it was short-lived because joe1224 rivered a pair of nines. joe1224 won the pot and collected a $13 bounty. For fourth place, flemse32 took home $10,790.77.

kelavi eliminated in 3rd place

Three-handed lasted roughly ten hands before someone bowed out. During that span, kelavi lost a 47.3M pot and a 20.8M pot, only to become the hunted. With a gaunt stack. kelavi was looking to stave off an elimination. kelavi moved all-in for 15,465,580 with A♠4♥ and JCSavedMe11 called with K♣Q♥. The flop was K♦Q♦5♣ and JCSavedMe11 flopped two pair. The 10♦ fell on the turn, which kelavi some hopes and outs with a Broadway straight draw. But the K♠ spiked on the river and JCSavedMe11 rivered a full house. JCSavedMe11 dragged the pot and collected a $13 bounty. As part of the deal, kelavi locked up $22,193.72 for third place.
