SCOOP 2014: sergei_s1 goes wire-to-wire in Event #7-H ($2,100 NL Draw [Re-Entry])

May 07, 2014

For a small-field event, this one was quite a marathon. It took the better part of eleven and a half hours for Event #7-H, a $2,100 buy-in no-limit 5-Card Draw tourney, to play down from its 45 entries to a winner. Although the players filled only seven tables, it was a group chock-full of familiar faces, the likes of Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond, Justin “ZeeJustin” Bonomo, Andrey “Kroko-dill” Zaichenko, Shawn “buck21” Buchanan and Scott “gunning4you” Seiver vying for a SCOOP watch. However, Russia’s sergei_s1 turned out to be the man to beat as he seized the chip lead with two tables remaining. A veteran of the 2013 SCOOP’s low buy-in NL Draw final table (he finished second), sergei_s1 did himself one better this year and rode his big stack all the way to the winner’s circle.

Event #7-H drew 42 individual players, three of whom elected to re-enter (Kroko-dill, cal42688 and MrSweets28). The prize pool topped out at $90,000.00 with $36,000.00 going to the winner. However, given the size of the field only five places were paid, meaning a trip to the six-handed final table did not guarantee a cash. Team Pros George Danzer and Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier tried their luck in this event, but were eliminated in 26th and 28th places respectively.

Blinds were 300/600 with seven players remaining and Scott “gunning4you” Seiver was the short stack with 6,356 in chips. After HetaGunnar42 opened for 1,320 from UTG, gunning4you three-bet shoved and HetaGunnar42 called. Gunning4you drew three cards while HetaGunnar42 took two. Although gunning4you showed down K♠K♥Q♥5♦5♥ for two pair kings and fives, HetaGunnar42 turned up trip jacks and sent gunning4you to the rail on the final table bubble.

Final table chip counts

Seat 1: mahtipeluri (20,618 in chips)
Seat 2: octane190 (11,269 in chips)
Seat 3: Nedifen (39,962 in chips)
Seat 4: NoraFlum (21,464 in chips)
Seat 5: HetaGunnar42 (55,232 in chips)
Seat 6: sergei _s1 (76,455 in chips)

Marco “NoraFlum” Johnson bubbles

Although the final table was set, one unfortunate soul would still depart without a penny in prize money. Octane190 was the short stack six-handed, but doubled his 8,750 in chips to 18,700 when his aces and kings edged out NoraFlum’s tens and sixes. NoraFlum was left with 9,500 and with the blinds up to 350/700, he moved all-in from UTG. Nedifen called from the big blind and drew two cards while NoraFlum drew one. Nedifen revealed trip sevens, crushing NoraFlum’s queens and fours and ending his run on the money bubble.

octane190 gasses out

Over the course of the next level, octane190 slipped to 4,250 in chips before doubling through mahtipeluri with a pair of kings vs. a pair of tens. Octane190 moved up to 9,000 in chips and mahtipeluri fell to 13,400. Octane190 held steady for a few more orbits before three-bet shoving on the button for 8,581. Initial raiser sergei_s1 called and drew one while octane190 discarded three. Sergei_s1’s draw was fruitful and he turned over 2♣2♠2♦9♥9♦ – deuces full of nines. Octane190 improved as well, making two pair aces and sevens, but it wasn’t enough. For fifth place, octane190 took home $7,200.00.

Nedifen neutralized

With four players remaining, sergei_s1 was out to a dominating chip lead with 93,300, his closest competitor Nedifen with 57,000. Mahtipeluri was riding the short stack with 18,400 but won back-to-back pots to move up to a more comfortable 34,800. Meanwhile, Nedifen dropped to 18,000 in chips when he tangled in a pot with mahtipeluri. The blinds up to 600/1,200, mahtipeluri opened for a min-raise to 2,400 and Nedifen three-bet to 5,995. Mahtipeluri called and both players drew one card. Nedifen check-called mahtipeluri’s 6,000 bet after the draw, but mucked at the sight of his 9♦9♣9♥5♥2♦.

As the end of the level neared, HetaGunnar42 opened for 2,400 from the cutoff and Nedifen moved in for his remaining 13,780 from the big blind. HetaGunnar42 called and drew two while Nedifen discarded three. Althoug Nedifen turned up 10♣10♦8♥8♦3♥ for tens and eights, HetaGunnar42 had him one better on each pair, revealing A♠J♣[s]9♠9♦ for jacks and nines. Nedifen was eliminated in fourth place, earning $9,000.00 for his efforts.

mahtipeluri coolered in third

Only three hands later, sergei_s1, still the chip leader with 101,000, opened for 3,399 on the button. Mahtipeluri shoved for 25,387 from the small blind and sergei_s1 called. Both players drew one card and showed down a cooler of a result. Mahtipeluri improved to jacks full of kings, but it wasn’t enough to beat sergei_s1’s queens full of tens. Mahtipeluri hit the rail in third place ($13,500.00) leaving HetaGunnar42 and sergei_s1 to battle it out heads-up.

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 5: HetaGunnar42 (97,928 in chips)
Seat 6: sergei _s1 (127,072 in chips)

After four hands heads-up, HetaGunnar42 asked sergei_s1 if he wanted to make a deal for the bulk of the prize money and play for the remaining $3,000. Segei_s1 agreed to pause the action and final table host Caio Pessagno helped them run the calculations. The ICM numbers awarded them both $28k and change, only a little over $600 separating their shares. Both players quickly agreed to the deal and with $3,000 still up for grabs, cards went back in the air.

HetaGunnar42 moved into the chip lead in a pot sergei_s1 three-bet to 7,299 before the draw. HetaGunnar42 called and discarded three while sergei_s1 drew one card. Sergei_s1 led out for 9,999, HetaGunnar42 raised to 23,888 and sergei_s1 called, only to be shown trip queens. Sergei_s1 mucked and HetaGunnar42 raked in the 63,000 pot, increasing his stack to 130,000.

That hand must have lit a fire under sergei_s1 because he went on to win 12 of the next 13 hands. The largest of those pots came in at 37,000, which he took down with sixes full of sevens after drawing three cards. Soon, sergei_s1 was back on top with 154,000 to HetaGunnar42’s 71,000.

Sergei_s1 kept the pressure on and HetaGunnar42 couldn’t seem to find any traction, his stack slipping to 27,400. With the blinds up to 800/1,600, HetaGunnar42 opened for 3,200 and sergei_s1 called. Sergei_s1 drew two and HetaGunnar42 drew one. Sergei_s1 checked, HetaGunnar42 bet 5,400 and sergei_s1 moved all-in. HetaGunnar42 called off his remaining 18,400 and revealed queens up, but sergei_s1 once again had the best hand with aces and deuces.

Congratulations to sergei_s1 on shipping his first SCOOP title and $31,952.49! Kudos are also due to runner-up HetaGunnar42, who has enjoyed an absolutely insane run over the last two days, finishing third in event #6-H ($700+R NLHE) last night for over $189k and coming in second here for another $28,347.51.
