SCOOP 2015: Emil “Maroonlime” Patel squeezes out a win in Event #29-H ($2,100 PLO 6-Max)

May 20, 2015

A long time ago, in a very different poker landscape on an American broadcast network that no longer exists, Emil “Maroonlime” Patel starred on a reality TV show called “2 Months 2 Million.” For ten episodes, it followed Patel and three friends who shared a house during the WSOP as they attempted to earn two million dollars in two months. Although the foursome ultimately fell short of their monetary goal (and a second-season renewal), Patel is still remembered for his brief go at reality TV stardom. Six years later, he’s living in Helsinki, Finland and still playing a world-class game, both online and live. He won over $128k in a £5,000 PLO side event at last October’s EPT London and still frequents high-stakes online PLO cash games. One thing missing? A ‘COOP title. Patel had a couple of close calls, finishing fourth in a $2,100 NLHE event during the 2013 SCOOP and fifth in a WCOOP $215 NLHE event in 2014, but tonight he finally grabbed the brass ring, taking down a SCOOP watch in Event #29-H along with over $98,000.

Emil “Maroonlime” Patel, Event #29-H champion
Event #29-H had 205 entries (179 unique players and 26 re-entries) resulting in a $410,000 prize pool. 24 places were paid with first place set to earn $98,400.00.

The generous structure meant it took eight hours and fifteen minutes to reach the money bubble and another two and a half hours to narrow the field to its final seven players. The blinds were up to 1,000/2,000 when 444446 opened for 4,880 and ElCast13 three-bet to 17,640. 444446 came back over the top for 34,000 and ElCast13 called off his remaining 5,841.

ElCast13 A♣J♦10♠4♣
444446 A♦Q♣8♦5♣

The Q♠9♦7♦ flop gave 444446 top pair, the nut flush draw, and a gutshot straight draw while ElCast13 hit an open-ended straight draw. The K♥ turn made ElCast13 a king-high straight, but 444446 outdrew him on the river, the 4♦ making his nut flush. ElCast13 hit the rail in seventh place and the final table was set.

Seat 2: eddymaksoud (74,173 in chips)
Seat 3: TheFresKeR (73,458 in chips)
Seat 4: Lena900 (127,992 in chips)
Seat 5: Maroonlime (434,727 in chips)
Seat 6: 444446 (288,728 in chips)

Short stack Johnny Lodden doubled up in short order, betting the last of his chips on a K♠10♥3♦ flop. Maroonlime looked him up with A♠Q♦7♥4♥ and made two pair when the turn and river brought the Q♠ and the 4♣, but Lodden made Broadway on the turn with A♦Q♣J♦3♣ and doubled to 52,844.

Later in the same level, the action folded to 444446, who opened for 4,880. Lodden three-bet to 16,640 and 444446 called. The rest of Lodden’s chips went in on the A♦10♥4♥ flop and he revealed A♣K♠K♥8♦ for a pair of aces. 444446 showed K♦J♦9♥7♥ and hit his flush on the turn with the Q♥, ending Lodden’s run in sixth place.

Lodden’s departure left TheFresKeR as the short stack, but he soon got his chips in preflop vs. 444446. TheFresKeR flopped kings and tens with K♦10♥5♦3♥ and doubled to 57,188 while 444446’s 9♣9♠3♣2♠ did not improve.

The blinds rose to 1,250/2,500 and Lena900 led off the action with a raise to 6,250. Maroonlime three-bet to 22,500 and Lena900 came back over the top for 71,250. Maroonlime called and they saw a K♥9♣9♥ flop. Lena900 moved all-in for 44,039 and Maroonlime called.

Lena900 A♠A♣J♦5♦
Maroonlime J♥10♦7♦3♥

Lena900 flopped aces and nines, but Maroonlime had a slew of outs with flush and straight draws. Maroonlime hit a king-high straight when the Q♠ turned and improved to a king-high flush on the river with the 8♥, sending Lena900 home in fifth place.

TheFresKeR hung on with twenty big blinds until he picked up A♣K♠J♣5♣ and three-bet to 24,960 preflop. Opening raiser 444446 called and the rest of TheFresKeR’s chips went in on the A♦8♣7♣ flop. 444446 called and turned over A♥10♠9♦6♥. The J♠ turn improved TheFresKeR to aces and jacks, but the 7♠ river made 444446 a jack-high straight, eliminating TheFresKeR in fourth place.

As three-handed play commenced, Maroonlime was the chip leader with 507,000, 444446 held 400,000 and eddymaksoud was the short stack with 118,000. 444446 polled his opponents regarding an ICM deal, but Maroonlime wasn’t interested.

Maroonlime: no thanks
Maroonlime: let’s gamble
444446: i hate gambling

Eddymaksoud got a boost when he check-raised a J♣6♣4♥ flop and Maroonlime three-bet to 208,600. Eddymaksoud called all-in, revealing A♥J♥10♦4♠ for jacks and fours. Maroonlime shoved K♣10♥5♣5♠ for a king-high flush draw, but missed his outs when the turn and river fell the 7♥ and the A♠. Eddymaksoud raked in the pot and doubled to 266,000.

By the end of the 2,000/4,000 level, all three stacks were nearly equal, ranging from 330,000 to 360,000. The stalemate continued for more than two and a half hours as the chip leader swung from player to player. Eddymaksoud dipped to 200,000 in chips as the blinds climbed to 5,000/10,000 and fell all the way to 96,000 following a 15-hand drought in which either Maroonlime or 444446 won every pot. On the 16th hand, Maroonlime opened for 25,000 and eddymaksoud three-bet to 80,000 with A♥A♦8♥4♣. Maroonlime four-bet to 135,000 and eddymaksoud called all-in. Maroonlime turned over Q♣Q♦Q♥J♣ and improbably caught the case queen on the Q♠9♦2♦ flop to make a set. Eddymaksoud needed an ace or running cards to survive, but got the 6♥ and the K♣ instead, ending the three-handed marathon.

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 5: Maroonlime (481,721 in chips)
Seat 6: 444446 (543,279 in chips)

444446 fought back and edged out to a 598k to 426k chip lead before Maroonlime struck back. On a K♦8♣3♠ flop, 444446 led out for 40,000 and Maroonlime called. The turn came the 7♥ and 444446 fired another 90,000, but was met with a shove from Maroonlime. 444446 folded and slipped to 439,000 while Maroonlime retook the chip lead with 586,000. However, 444446 roared back only moments later, calling Maroonlime’s turn and river bets on a Q♦8♦5♣2♠J♣ board with K♣J♠J♥2♣. 444446 took down the 320,000 pot with a set of jacks and moved up to 709,000.

Maroonlime slid all the way to 269,000 before he picked up K♦K♣J♦10♥ and opened for 20,000. 444446 called and they saw a 9♥8♠6♥ flop. Both players checked. The turn, though, was the K♠, making Maroonlime top set. 444446 checked, Maroonlime bet 28,000 and 444446 raised to 124,000. Maroonlime shoved and 444446 called, revealing 7♦5♦5♣2♦. for a flopped nine-high straight. Maroonlime struck gold on the river with the 8♦ and doubled to 539,000 with kings full of eights.

After that, there was no stopping Maroonlime. He won 14 of the next 15 pots to chip up to 858,000, pushing 444446 down to 164,000. With the blinds still 5,000/10,000, Maroonlime opened for 20,000 on the button and 444446 three-bet to 60,000. Maroonlime called and they saw a 10♦4♦4♣ flop. 44446 moved all-in and Maroonlime called.

444446 A♣A♥Q♠7♦
Maroonlime A♠8♦4♠3♦

Maroonlime flopped trip fours and a flush draw, snapping off 444446’s aces. The 9♠ turn was no help to 444446 and the Q♦ river made Maroonlime’s flush as he shipped the pot and his first SCOOP title.

Congratulations to Emil “Maroonlime” Patel on a long-awaited SCOOP victory! He banked $98,400.00 for the win, while runner-up 444446 earned $67,855.00.
