The 2016 SCOOP series has whizzed by so far and we’re starting to see who may be in with a chance of winning the leaderboards. Others are looking at tournaments that might get them out of the hole. Either way, a 4-Max No-Limit Hold’em tournament offers something a little different.

No player specializes in this format, but it’s an ideal meeting ground for those who focus on 6-Max, those who like to play heads up, and all the regular high stakes MTT players. The High version of this round had a $2,100 entry fee and $250k was guaranteed. A very impressive 308 players entered on Day 1 to see the prize pool rise all the way to $616,000.

That meant the top 36 players would end up in the money, winning a minimum of $4,496.80. Russian player Alex Borodin was the unfortunate player to bubble, and play continued until the end of Level 19 where 20 players remained, led by Canadian roo_400.

Eight Team Pros entered, including leaderboard chasing Jason “JasonMericer” Mercier and Naoya “nkeyno” Kihara but none of them made the money. Jake “JakeCody” Cody was the only player to make the top 100, busting in 79th.

Day 2

The players returned for Day 2 with a big blind average of around 64, so the depth meant that the rate of eliminations was slow and steady. It took around two hours of play before 12 players hit the rail and the last two tables remained, and this is how their stacks looked:

roo_400 had lost the lead, but remained in contention, albeit as the short stack. 2015 SCOOP winner ale6ka, farmjim and Daniel “dougiedan678” McAulay all started the day in the bottom five but made great strides in making the final two tables. None made the strides of Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford though. The rising star started in fifth place but rocketed to the top of the counts and had double of second place by the time two tables remained.

roo_400 and farmjim hit the rail in eighth and seventh respectively, before hand-for-hand play was introduced. It slowed play down considerably but was the only fair option, especially with the money jumps a minimum four times the buy in and increasing. dougiedan678 was next to go after his jacks were cracked by 8-6 and all the remaining players were combined onto one table.

Pablo “pablotenisis” Fernández initiated deal talks and everyone agreed to look at the numbers, but 1nvoker quickly changed his mind, telling his opponents they could look again once he busted. 1nvoker had become the short stack, he was at risk, and the numbers were looked at again very soon – with four players remaining.

Pablotenisis opened the button with K♣ K♦ and called after 1nvoker three-bet all-in from the big blind for around 10 big blinds. He opened the horribly dominated Kâ™  3â™  and no flush came to his rescue. The four remaining players paused to look at the numbers, and an ICM deal was quickly agreed, with $5,000 and SCOOP watch left to play for. Here’s what the players locked up:

1_conor_b_1: $114,778.15
srxakgirona: $100,293.83
ale6ka: $88,777.98
pablotenisis: $59,672.04

1_conor_b_1 locked up the largest share of the prize pool due to being the biggest stack, and he extended that lead by knocking out ale6ka on the second hand after play was resumed. The two players took to a J♦ 9♥ 10♥ flop after four-bets preflop. 1_conor_b_1 led from the small blind and called after ale6ka raised all-in with A♥ Qâ™  . 1_conor_b_1 had flopped top set with J♣ J♥ and held through the 6â™  4♦ turn and river. That put the Brit close to 2 million but he’d soon be knocked off the higher ground.

Sergi “srxakgirona” Reixach raised his button with Aâ™  3♥ and called after 1_conor_b_1 three-bet from the small blind with with A♦ 4â™  . The flop fell A♣ 4♦ 3♣ and, with both players flopping two pair, carnage was going to occur, but not until the river. srxakgirona just called a c-bet and improved to a full house on the 3â™  turn. 1_conor_b_1 led once more, and once more he opponent smooth called. There was 316k in the middle and srxakgirona had 753k back, an amount he was asked to call for as 1_conor_b_1 jammed. The former made a quick call to show the latter the bad news, and the two players effectively swapped places in a huge pot worth 260 big blinds!

pablotenisis’s stack shrunk over the following while but the next big confrontation involved his two opponents once more. srxakgirona raised from the small blind with A♦ K♣ and 1_conor_b_1 defended his big blind with 6♦ 6â™  . The board ran out as 10♥ 10â™  Aâ™  6♣ 3â™  with srxakgirona betting every street. 1_conor_b_1 called all the way to the river where he made a big raise all-in with his turned full house. srxakgirona called with two pair and gave all the chips back to his opponent, who passed the 2 million mark for the first time.

It was time for pablotenisis to get moving and he found the right spot to do so, but couldn’t win a race and busted. He opened from the button with 8♣ 8â™  and then four-bet all-in after srxakgirona three-bet from the small blind with A♥ K♦ . The later called and paired up on a board than ran 5♥ 7♥ Kâ™  10â™  6♦ .

Heads up chip counts:

Seat 3: 1_conor_b_1 (2,073,750 in chips)
Seat 5: srxakgirona (1,006,250 in chips)

The pair of them had been keen to up the pace ever since a deal was agreed, and with over 300 big blinds in play, srxakgirona suggested, “you want to raise preflop btn 5 bb 10bb and then start?”

1_conor_b_1 agreed and the pots got bigger all of a sudden. So big actually that it was all over within five hands! After the voluntary blind increases, srxakgirona moved all-in was what was now effectively a 10bb push. 1_conor_b_1 tanked and then made the call.

srxakgirona: J♣ 6♣
1_conor_b_1: A♠ 2♥

The final board ran 8♦ A♦ 10â™  K♥ A♥ to hand the title and a massive $119,778.15 to Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford from the UK. Huge congratulations to all the finalists who played the game with a great amount of spirit and friendly competitiveness.
