SCOOP 2016: Secret_M0d3 victorious in High Roller Event #24-H ($21,000 NL 8-Max)

May 15, 2016

Secret_M0d3 won the richest prize thus far in the 2016 SCOOP. A small mountain of cash worth $718,217 was the winner’s share in the SCOOP $21,000 High Roller. Secret_M0d3 heroically held off a ravenous field of 143 high-rolling sharks and also thwarted another SCOOP win by Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes, thereby preventing the Brazilian Storm from inflicting any more damage after snatching up a dozen bracelets in the first week of SCOOP.

Brazilian bandito Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes came close to winning a second SCOOP in a span of five days. Moraes is amidst a $1.2 million rush that Elky would aptly describe as “So sick!” He’s been crushing both live and online over the last two weeks with a third-place finish and €568,200 score in the €25K High Roller event at the EPT12 Monte Carlo, plus he followed that up with his first-ever SCOOP win a couple of days ago. In the SCOOP High Roller, Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes almost replicated another victory, but he got sidetracked and busted in fourth place. But the results are staggering: since May 3, Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes won over $1.2M.

The High Roller crown came down to a heads-up battle between Secret_M0d3 from Slovenia and Denmark’s hhecklen. During their methodical, yet forceful 45-minute bout, they settled into small-ball poker for the first level. During their second full level, both players probed forward with a little more aggression. Secret_M0d3 sniffed out a fifth-street bluff in a particular hand that altered the momentum for the rest of the tournament. At the next possible opportunity to strike, Secret_M0d3 pounced and finally finish off hhecklen in second place. Secret_M0d3 stepped into the spotlight as the newest SCOOP champion, which also comes with High Roller bragging rights. I hope he’s got a big, sturdy suitcase, because $718,217.50 is a lot of cash to lug around.

SCOOP Event #24-H $21,000 NL High-Roller (8-Max) attracted 143 total entries from 113 original combatants who fired an additional 30 bullets in this single re-entry event. This particular High Roller prize pool topped out at $2,931,500, which obliterated the initial $500K Guarantee. Only the top 16 places paid out, but first place was going to get a juicy cut of the prize pool worth $718,217.50.

Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes sensational 2-week heater at the EPT12 Monte Carlo and 2016 SCOOP

Another two-day affair. Day 1 of the SCOOP High Roller ended with only 23 players advancing to Day 2. Slovenia’s hurrrrican3 held the lead with 307K, followed by Plv3Y’s 270K. Brain Rast clung onto the shortest stack remaining with 22K, while the average stack was 124K. Only the top 16 places paid out, or the final two tables, so the money bubble did not burst until early on Day 2 when Dan ‘Danny98765’ Smith busted in 17th place. The man, the myth, the legend Shaun Deeb barely scrapped and clawed his way into Day 2 with minimal holdings. Alas, Deeb was wafflecrush’d as the second player to bust on Day 2 and he missed the money by six spots.

With nine to go and action hand-for-hand, Slovenia’s hurrrrican3 picked off myzikant on the final table bubble with A♣5♠ against K♥5♥. That hand pushed hurrrrican3 over a half-million in chips and the 8-Max final table was set.

SCOOP-24-H: $21,000 High Roller – Final Table Chip Counts:
Seat 1: tsarrast (249,867)
Seat 2: jakoon1985 (298,429)
Seat 3: hhecklen (154,777)
Seat 4: GM_VALTER (371,771)
Seat 5: Secret_M0d3 (715,808)
Seat 6: hurrrrican3 (520,481)
Seat 7: bencb789 (283,854)
Seat 8: nizmo jiz (265,013)

The final table commenced during Level 23 with blinds at 3.5K/7K and 1,050 ante. Secret_M0d3 sat atop the biggie with nearly 716K, whereas Brian ‘tsarrast’ Rast held the shortest of the shorties with under 250K. At least three former SCOOP champs were seated at this final table — GM_VALTER, jakoon1985, and bencb789.

Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes belongs to the wave of Brazilians who won a SCOOP title during the opening week when he destroyed the field in Event #4-H. He also earned a sensational $300K score for his first SCOOP. Moraes won the Super Tuesday for a six-figure score. And only a couple of weeks ago, Moraes final tabled an EPT High Roller event in Monte Carlo.

Jason ‘jakoon1985’ Koon won a SCOOP back in 2009 and he even shipped the Super Tuesday. Also, bencb789 won a SCOOP in 2014.

Martin ‘nizmo jiz’ Kozlov has nearly $2 million in online earnings and numerous COOP final tables including a 2015 WCOOP.

Brian Rast won two WSOP bracelet and boasts over $16 million in live winnings. He also recently won a prop bet riding a bicycle from Las Vegas to Los Angeles in under 48 hours.

Also of note… Secret_M0d3 final tabled Event #2-H and hurrrrican3 final table Event #7-H.

TIME TO PRETEND: tsarrast eliminated in 8th place

The blinds were rather low and everyone was somewhat deep, so no one busted right away. The final table got to feel each other out for a couple of levels before it was time for a showdown at high noon. Brian Rast became the first player to exit the final table after the ultra-shorty jammed all-in for 134,417 and made a valiant stand with Q♠Q♣. However, hurrrrican3 unmercifully outflopped him with A♥J♠. In a flash, Rast’s Queens were ravished and his SCOOP High Roller run came to an abrupt end. The carnage occurred on the flop of A♦J♦6♠A♠10♠. hurrrrican3 flopped top two, then complicated matters by turning a full house. Rast’s Queens were cracked and he was out. An eighth-place finish earned Brian ‘tsarrast’ Rast a payday worth $87,945.00.

With seven remaining, hurrrrican3 led with 850K and hhecklen was the new shorty with 180K.

ALIEN DAYS: jakoon1985 eliminated in 7th place

Another couple levels played out without anyone busting… jakoon1985 open-shoved for 173,981 with 3♣3♦ and GM_VALTER re-shoved for 322,008 with 7♠7♥ and everyone else bailed. The board ran out 9♠8♠2♣7♦K♦. GM_VALTER turned a set of sevens and won the pot. Canada’s jakoon1985 was unable to pull off an upset and busted in seventh place, which paid out $117,260.00.

With six remaining, hurrrrican3 led with 890K, followed by nizmo jiz’s 601K. Sweden’s bencb789 was in trouble with a serious short stack.

OF MOONS, BIRDS, AND MONSTERS: bencb789 eliminated in 6th place

Classic suck-resuck. Shorty bencb789 doubled up once and tried to pull off the feat again. bencb789 bombed it all-in for 123,556 and Secret_M0d3 called.

Secret_M0d3: A♠A♦
bencb789: 3♥3♠

The board ran out 4♦3♣2♦7♦K♦. bencb789 flopped a set of treys to take the lead. However, Secret_M0d3 picked up a Wheel gutshot draw. The turn gave Secret_M0d3 additional outs with a diamond-flush draw. The river filled in a four-flush and Secret_M0d3 won the hand with a Ace-high flush against a set. Sweden’s bencb789 was knocked out in sixth place, which paid out $14,6575.00.

With five to go, hurrrrican3 was the big stack with 818K, followed by hhecklen (611K), nizmo jiz (531K), Secret_M0d3 (468K), and GM_VALTER (430K).

FUTURE REFLECTIONS: nizmo jiz eliminated in 5th place

Two Aces entered the Octogon, but only one walked out. nizmo jiz bombed it all-in for 216,558 with A♠8♦ and Secret_M0d3 called with A♥J♠. The board finished up K♣9♥5♠4♠6♣. Neither player improved, but Secret_M0d3 won the pot with Ace-Jack kicker. Australia’s nizmo jiz was knocked out in fifth place, which paid out $19,0547.50.

With four left in the hunt for the stacks of cash and the High Roller bracelet, Secret_M0d3 led with 923K, followed by hurrrrican3 (822K), hhecklen (782K), and GM_VALTER (332K).

4TH DIMENSIONAL TRANSITION: Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes eliminated in 4th place

It was not going to be another win for Brazil because Moraes busted in fourth place. Secret_M0d3 opened to 40,000, shorty GM_VALTER moved all-in for his last 61,849 with 4♠4♦ and Secret_M0d3 called with A♠J♦. The board ran out K♣J♠2♥8♥7♣. The Jack on the flop sunk GM_VALTER’s pocket fours. Secret_M0d3 won the pot and Rafael ‘GM_VALTER’ Moraes busted in fourth place, which paid out $263,835.00. The Brazilian Cachorro Grande (a.k.a. Big Dog) won nearly $565K playing SCOOP this week. If you count his winnings from the EPT Monte Carlo (he cashed in two events including the High Roller for a $655,779 score), GM_VALTER won over $1.2M since the third of May.

With three to go, the idea of a money chop was floated. Any deal had to leave $100,000 on the table for the champion. hurrrrican3 was the big stack with 1.1M, followed by hhecklen’s 914K, and Secret_M0d3’s 835K. The numbers were floated: hurrrrican3 ($548,224.41), hhecklen ($424,969.02), Secret_M0d3 ($514,474.07). hhecklen wanted $550K, or no deal. The deal was called off, so play resumed without a money chop.

WEEKEND WARS: hurrrrican3 eliminated in 3rd place

Slovenia vs. Slovenia. Secret_M0d3 bombed it all-in for 1,420,720 with Q♦Q♥ and hurrrrican3 called all-in for 274,386 with A♥4♦. The board finished up K♦Q♣8♠6♦9♦. Secret_M0d3 flopped a set of Queens, which held up. For a third-place finish, hurrrrican3 collected $381,095.00

HEADS-UP: hhecklen (Denmark) vs. Secret_M0d3 (Slovenia)
Seat 3: hhecklen (1,130,094)
Seat 5: Secret_M0d3 (1,729,906)

Two to go in the High Roller. Secret_M0d3 missed a chance to win a SCOOP earlier in the week and was not about to waste another opportunity. Meanwhile, hhecklen needed to a plan to overcome the slight chip advantage.

ELECTRIC FEEL: hhecklen eliminated in 2nd place; Secret_M0d3 wins SCOOP High Roller bracelet

Heads-up lasted 45 minutes. About thirty minutes in, Secret_M0d3 won a decisive 1.1M pot after sniffing out a bluff. hhecklen missed a straight draw an tried to push Secret_M0d3 off the pot by betting big on the river (436K into a 295K pot). The board was 7♥9♦3♣10♥A♦ and Secret_M0d3 tank called with Q♠10♦ for a pair of tens. It was good enough to win. Secret_M0d3 opened up a 5-1 edge at that point and it would only be a matter of time before Secret_M0d3 delivered the final crushing blow.

Secret_M0d3 was ahead 2.4M to 460K going into the final hand. hhecklen bombed it all-in for 455,773 with Q♠9♠ and Secret_M0d3 snap-called with A♠2♥. The board ran out 10♣6♥5♠5♥A♣. hhecklen never improved and lost to Secret_M0d3’s two pair — Aces and fives.

For a runner-up finish, Denmark’s hhecklen took home $498,355.00. That’s the beauty of the SCOOP High Roller… even second place gets nearly a half of a million bucks!
