It’s May, and spring has well and truly sprung. While many can be found enjoying the warmer weather outdoors, the grinders among us are most likely to be found inside next to a pile of month-long provisions and Vitamin-D pills with no intention of seeing a single ray of sunlight for the next few weeks.
Why? Because the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) has officially begun.
The festivities kicked off over the weekend with SCOOP-02-H Event: $1,050 NLHE, $600K Gtd – where it seemed all the high rollers were out to play. At close of registration on Day 1 (Sunday), a whopping 749 had registered to take a stab at scooping (ahem, apologies) a title and sharing a chunk of the $749,000 prize-pool.
But it wasn’t just the high-rollers who were out in force. Hidden among the likes of Viktor ‘isildur1’ Blom, Ben ‘Sauce123’ Sulsky and Charlie ‘Epiphany77’ Carrell was giftmyra who chopped heads-up with eventual tournament winner FourSixFour. It’s quite the result for the Swedish amateur, who whose previous biggest online cash had been $2735. His heads up-opponent FourSixFour took an extra $12,000 for winning the heads up battle, as well as the SCOOP title and $123,780.25.
Of the 749 hopefuls way back at the start of Day 1, only 99 would pocket the cash. Early eliminations included the likes of Team Online Pro Jaime Staples, Team Pro’s Lex Veldhuis, and Adi Agarwal. Last year’s winner of the event C.Darwin2 also fell short of the mark. isildur1 faired a little better, clawing his way into the cash before meeting his demise in 63rd at the end of Day 1.
After 12 hours of play just 31 remained at the start of Day 2 with GotURead holding a mega-chip lead over nearest rivals FourSixFour and two-time SCOOP champ ex6tenceLV. It took just over two and a half hours to whittle the field down to the final nine after Chris ‘Moorman1’ Moorman bubbled the final table when his pocket kings were unable to hold against giftmyra’s 7-2 off. Ouch.
Here’s how the final table counts stacked up and played out:
Seat 1: bamboocha88 (456,486 in chips)
Seat 2: ex6tenceLV (218,142 in chips)
Seat 3: Naza114 (344,851 in chips)
Seat 4: Clutch Hero (821,865 in chips)
Seat 5: giftmyra (1,303,914 in chips)
Seat 6: GotURead (1,487,369 in chips)
Seat 7: Crackdel29 (575,077 in chips)
Seat 8: FourSixFour (650,145 in chips)
Seat 9: hurrrican3 (1,632,151 in chips)
Blinds – 7000/14000, Ante – 1,400
ex6tenceLV – 9th ($9,737), Naza114 – 8th ($16,478)
The first two eliminations came in quick succession shortly before the first break. First to fall was ex6tenceLV whose 3-bet against bamboocha88’s open prompted a shove which he called off. With bamboocha88 holding 6♣6♥ and ex6tenceLV K♠A♣, it looked to be a classic race until the 6♦ hit the flop to send ex6temceLV to the rail.
On he very next hand it was Naza114’s turn to head home after getting his remaining 20 big-blinds in with Q♣Q♥. They weren’t enough to hold against hurrrican3’s A♣K♥ after the board ran A♥3♥10♦2♠6♦.
Crackdel29 – 7th ($23,968), hurrrican3 – 6th ($31,458), Clutch Hero- 5th ($38,948)
A short while after the break and Crackel29 was next to go. His bust-out came following an open from giftmyra on the button and a 3-bet from GotURead in the small blind. After getting it all in the middle and being called by GotURead, his Q♥A♥ would need some help against GotURead’s K♠K♦. He didn’t find any on the 10♦4♦8♥J♣2♠ board.
Out in 6th was hurrican3 who lost a big chunk of his stack to bamboocha88 after losing a hand with Q♥Q♦ against K♣A♥ all-in pre-flop. He got his remaining few big blinds in with A♣10♦ which wasn’t enough to hold against FourSixFour’s K♥8♦ with the K♠ hitting the flop.
It took a while before Clutch Hero met his demise. He shoved his remaining nine big blinds in the middle holding K♣Q♠. It was trumped by GotURead’s 10♣10♥ after the board ran clean.
GotURead- 4th ($55,800.50), bamboocha88 – 3rd ($73,151.00)
In perhaps the sickest hand of the final table, the chipleader at the start of the day GotURead was eliminated in 4th. It came following an open from bamboocha88 and a defend from GotURead in the big-blind. The flop was the 3♥Q♥5♣ at which bamboocha88 led with a c-bet. It was quickly called by GotURead before the 9♠ came on the turn. bamboocha88 continued the pressure, betting out enough to put GotURead all-in. After a while it was called, with GotURead flipping over 4♥J♥ and needing a heart to make the flush against bamboocha88’s 5♦9♦ for two pair. GotURead’s first reaction was probably elation when another heart hit the board, followed quickly by devastation when he realised it was 5♥, giving bamboocha88 a runner-runner full-house.
Out in third place was bamboocha88 after a blind-on-blind shove with A♣5♣ was called by giftmyra holding K♥Q♥. It was all over on the flop when the K♠ came in the window and the board ran 2♦8♣6♠6♥ to give giftmyra the lead.
giftmyra – 2th ($111,780.25), FourSixFour – 1st ($123,780.25)
After 20 hands of heads-up play the clocks were paused to discuss a deal. An even chop was agreed on, with $12,000 left to play for. After some early skirmishes between the two, the chip-lead swang massively in FourSixFour’s favour after an all-in was called from giftmyra holding K♣J♥ on a J♠5♥8♦ flop. But FourSixFour had him beat holding J♦8♥ for two pair as the board ran clean.
The final hand saw a raise from giftmyra and a shove from FourSixFour, which was eventually called. giftmyra showed Q♦9♣ and FourSixFour K♠8♥. The board of 6♦5♣2♦3♥A♦ wasn’t enough to save giftmyra, and Brit FourSixFour claimed the title.
