The World Series of Poker is coming back around later this month. For Jerry “hummylun” Wong, the WSOP’s return is welcome — after all, just a year ago he made it all of the way to eighth place in the WSOP Main Event for a career-best $1.1 million-plus score.
For Wong and others, the Spring Championship of Online Poker affords a great chance to practice non-hold’em games prior to the WSOP, and Wong got himself a nice two-day razz workout in the $2,100 buy-in Event #14-H. It was a profitable one, too, as Wong topped a 123-entry field to win the title and a $60,270 first prize.
Wong outlasted a tough final table, one including Scott Seiver, Viktor Blom, Calvin Anderson, Matt Grapenthien, and Shawn Buchanan. Not at all bad springboard into the summer for the New Yorker.
That field meant a $246,000 prize pool — well over the $150K guarantee — with the top 16 splitting the winnings. The bubble burst shortly before the end of play on Wednesday, with kuhn89 (16th) and Henrik “hhecklen” Hecklen (15th) the tournament’s first cashers, each earning $4,920.
With 14 left to end the night, merla888 topped the counts with 183,809, well ahead of a chase pack headed by six-time SCOOP winner Shawn “buck21” Buchanan with 126,891.
Also coming back to above average stacks on Day 2 were one-time SCOOP champ Scott “gunning4you” Seiver (in third position) and Calvin “cal42688” Anderson (in fourth), with Anderson fresh off winning a record eighth SCOOP title yesterday and 10th COOP crown overall in Event #13-H ($530 NL Hold’em, 3-Max, Turbo, Zoom, Progressive KO).
Mikhail “crossthervr” Petrov (in fifth), Wong (sixth), 2016 SCOOP Main Event “High” champion Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi (eighth), Mike “goleafsgoeh” Leah (ninth), 2013 SCOOP Main Event “High” champion Viktor “Isildur1” Blom (10th), Christopher “Ceegee87” George (11th) and Adam “Adamyid” Owen (13th) were also among the returners helping to ensure a star-studded final table for this one.
Christopher “Ceegee87” George was the first out on Day 2, finishing in 14th ($4,920) after losing a hand versus Viktor “Isildur1” Blom. Adam “Adamyid” Owen followed in 13th ($4,920) after Wong took the last of his stack.
krakukra (12th), VavaBobo888 (11th), Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi (10th), and Mike “goleafsgoeh” Leah (ninth) each followed those two the rail, picking up $6,150 apiece. They were just an hour into Day 2, and the final table was underway.

Short stack Shawn “buck21” Buchanan playfully proposed an eight-way even chop to the table as the first final table hand was dealt. Alas for Buchanan, he was soon all-in by third street in a hand versus crossthervr, ultimately losing with a 9-low to his opponent’s 8-low to go out in eighth.
A half-hour later Matt “grapenuts” Grapenthien, owner of a WSOP bracelet in seven-card stud, went out in seventh after losing a hand to Scott “gunning4you” Seiver. In his last hand Grapenthein started A-2-3-4 before getting his chips in on fifth, but Seiver made a wheel to win versus grapenuts’ 6-4-3-2-A.
Calvin “cal42688” Anderson would be the next out in sixth. He’d lost a big pot earlier versus Wong in a hand in which the latter had two kings on his board but managed to make a sneaky 6-low. Then Seiver got Anderson all in on sixth street with cal42688 holding a 8-7-6-2-A and Seiver with an 8-7-5-3-2. Seiver caught an ace on seventh (improving further to a 7-low) and Anderson a king, and Anderson was done.
A short while later a short Viktor “Isildur1” Blom fell in fifth with an 8-low versus Wong’s 6-low, and they made the next break with crossthervr leading the final four and Wong close in second.
Seiver would be the next out in fourth, getting his chips in on third with a 9-8-7 versus merla888’s 10-9-4, then being only able to draw to a Q-low while merla888 made a 9-6-4-3-A. No SCOOP title, then, to go along with Seiver’s earlier WCOOP win in 2014.
Play continued, and three hours into Day 2 it was Wong leading the final three with about half the chips in play. He continued to whittle away at the other two over the next half-hour, with merla888 eventually down to just over a couple of big bets.
Soon merla888 was all in on fifth street with 5-A-9-A-K versus Wong’s 3-8-2-J-Q. A six and a jack left merla888 with a J-9-low, while an eight and a six made a J-8-low for Wong, sending merla888 railward in third.
That pot gave Wong a nearly 5-to-1 chip edge to start heads-up play with 1,016,765 to crossthervr’s 213,235. Before long crossthervr was down under 60,000 — less than two big bets — and a hand arose that saw Wong get his opponent all in by fifth street.
At that point crossthervr had 7-9-K-T-6 and was ahead of Wong’s 7-5-Q-K-A — for the moment, anyway. crossthervr would then draw an eight and a deuce to make a 9-8-7-6-2. But Wong picked up a nine and trey to end with a better 9-7-5-3-A and it was all over — Wong had won!
