SCOOP: dmitry999 shows his luck of the draw in Event #3

April 04, 2009

SCOOP proves yet again that there are plenty of players interested in playing poker games other than No-Limit Hold’em. On Friday, in fact, many players chose to enter an event they probably learned sitting around the kitchen table at home – Event #3 $109 Pot-Limit 5-Card Draw.

Those who put up their C-Note plus $9 also got an extra treat with a big overlay in the prize pool.

The medium-sized version of Pot-Limit 5-Card Draw attracted 756 players, creating the overlay of nearly $20,000 for the players because of the $100,000 guaranteed prize pool. They had their eyes on the first-place prize of $17,630.

After nearly 11 and a half hours of play the final six were finally set. Here were the seating arrangements and chip counts entering the final table:

Seat 1 – dmitry999 1,184,971
Seat 2 – real_deal666 325,321
Seat 3 – AnAgrAmA 986,915
Seat 4 – wallfly 784,203
Seat 5 – shortdaddy 224,850
Seat 6 – and230750 284,240

The rich got richer on the fourth hand after real_deal666 was coolered. With blinds at 7,000 and 14,000 and an ante of 3,500, and230750 mini-raised to 28,000. Real_deal666 called on the button and AnAgrAmA raised the pot to 147,000 from the small blind. And230750 got out of the way, but real_deal666 raised all-in to 332,000. AnAgrAmA instantly called and stood pat. Although he held what would normally be considered a monster hand on the initial deal in five-card draw, real_deal666 now had to know he was in trouble. He drew two, but could not fill up, showing A♥ A♣ A♠ K♣ J♦ for unimproved trip aces. AnAgrAmA took the pot with his straight of 4♣ 5♥ 6♣ 7♠ 8♠ and finished the hand with 1.35 million in chips. Real_deal666 got $3,000 for sixth.

Shortdaddy was the next to get short-stacked and eventually depart. With blinds the same, AnAgrAmA limped, shortdaddy potted to 56,000 from the small blind and and230750 called in the big blind. AnAgrAmA folded. Shortdaddy drew three while and230750 needed only one. After the draw, shortdaddy bet his last 8,000 and and230750 called. The hands:

shortdaddy K♦ K♥ 4♥ 4♣ 2♦
and230750 K♣ K♠ 5♦ 5♣ 5♠

Shortdaddy collected $5,000 for his efforts.

Play slowed after shortdaddy’s exit. With an average stack of nearly 950,000, the four remaining players had an average of about 50 big blinds each. With only two betting rounds during 5-Card Draw that gave them plenty of play in maneuvering for the win.

About half an hour later, AnAgrAmA was back at it in a hand very reminiscent of his earlier knockout effort. And230750 raised the 20,000 big blind to 40,000 from the button. Dmitry999 folded in the small blind and AnAgrAmA re-raised to 80,000 from the big blind. And230750 responded by repotting it to 270,000. AnAgrAmA then bet enough to put and230750 all-in for his last 200K. AnAgrAmA stood pat and and230750 drew two. AnAgrAmA showed 5♣ 5♦ 5♠ Q♥ Q♣ for the dealt full house while and230750 missed his live draw and ended up with J♣ J♥ J♦ 2♥ 5♥, earning $7,000 for fourth. Meanwhile, AnAgrAmA had built an impressive stack of nearly 2 million after this hand, giving him more than half the chips in play.

The dynamic changed in this tug of war. Dmitry999 chipped up into the lead by winning a series of pots while wallfly got down nearly to the felt with around 50,000. He managed to triple up with aces up against his two opponents and eventually doubled through AnAgrAmA to 1.2 million when wallfly got all-in against his opponent after the deal and his trip tens held up.

Eight hands later AnAgrAmA had gone from chip leader to third-place finisher. Dmitry999 raised to 60,000 on the button and AnAgrAmA re-raised to 232,000 from the small blind. Dmitry999 called. AnAgrAmA drew three while Dmitry999 required only one fresh card. AnAgrAmA led out for the pot of 517,000 after the draw and dmitry999 quickly called with J♥ J♣ J♠ Q♥ 7♥. AnAgrAmA could only muster one pair with K♥ K♣ A♠ 7♠ 6♦ and earned $10,000 for his day’s work.

This gave dmitry999 a nice 2.63 million to 1.15 million chip advantage over wallfly entering heads-up play. He slowly chipped up to more than 3 million in chips as the tournament passed the 13-hour mark and the 15-minute break. But wallfly would catch a big hand to pull almost even in chips. After a series of raises, he got his 900K stack all-in before the draw and stood pat. Dmitry999 drew two and managed to pull a full house with 8♦ 8♠ 8♣ Q♠ Q♦, but wallfly had him covered with K♥ K♦ K♣ 5♦ 5♣.

Dmitry999 again pulled ahead with aggressive play. In the end, he won the final 10 hands. After nine hands of taking pots from wallfly with either raises or re-raises before the draw, wallfly finally fought back, getting his 980,000 stack in before the draw after a series of raises. Dmitry999 drew three while wallfly drew two. The final hands:

dmitry999 J♦ J♥ J♣ 7♦ 4♦
wallfly A♦ A♣ 10♦ 9♣ 5♦

Dmitry999 earned $17,630 and a SCOOP champion’s watch for the win while wallfly got a nifty $13,000 for the second-place standing.

Final placements and payouts were as follows:

First – dmitry999 ($17,630)
Second – wallfly ($13,000)
Third – AnAgrAmA ($10,000)
Fourth – and230750 ($7,000)
