Home / Uncategorized / Super Tuesday: Ryan “newguy89” McEathron’s strong year continues with $59K win (9-26-17)

It’s been a pretty good year for Ryan “newguy89” McEathron. He kicked off 2017 by winning an event during TCOOP. He followed that up with a final table appearance in the Super Tuesday on July 4th. And tonight he earned the second-biggest cash of his career – and the biggest in an outright win – with a victory in the Super Tuesday.

With WCOOP 2017 wrapping up earlier today, the Special Editions were put to bed for the rest of the year as the Super Tuesday returned to its regular format. It took a little over eight hours of poker to winnow the field to newguy89 and his competition for the evening:

Seat 1: 86839337 (755,374 in chips)
Seat 2: NutsPow (1,267,619 in chips)
Seat 3: Ryan “newguy89” McEathron (1,183,306 in chips)
Seat 4: Jon “PearlJammer” Turner (249,935 in chips)
Seat 5: SmallKindB (1,133,275 in chips)
Seat 6: merla888 (1,577,831 in chips)
Seat 7: com 157 (304,335 in chips)
Seat 8: Rafael “GM_VALTER” Moraes (245,320 in chips)
Seat 9: ulan2009 (1,258,005 in chips)

Fresh off a runner-up finish in WCOOP 2017’s Event #53-H, past Super Tuesday and SCOOP champ Rafael “GM_VALTER” Moraes had a big hill to climb with 12 big blinds as the final table began. He got those chips in good, raising all-in on the button with A♥ Q♣ and getting a call from Chinese player 86839337 with A♣ Jâ™  . But the 8â™  9♥ 8♥ J♥ 7â™  board gave 86839337 a pair of jacks and Moraes bowed out in ninth.

WCOOP 2017 PLO/8 champ Jon “PearlJammer” Turner followed Moraes in eighth a few minutes later when his A♥ K♦ couldn’t crack SmallKindB’s 10♣ 10â™  . newguy89 put everything on the line on the next hand and avoided elimination when his K♣ Kâ™  held up against WCOOP 2017 Event #69-H finalist merla888’s Q♣ Qâ™  for 1.62 million chips, and 10 minutes merla888 took another hit when A♥ K♦ couldn’t top ulan2009’s 2â™  2♥ .

Despite staying alive in that coin-flip situation, ulan2009 was still the next player out. After returning from the hourly break to 12,500/25,000/2,500 blinds and antes, ulan2009 picked up A♣ 8♦ in the small blind and re-raised all-in for 647,276 chips over the top of merla888’s small opening raise. Then 86839337 re-shoved from the big blind with Q♦ Q♥ , com 157 folded, and the queens held up through the river to bust ulan2009 in seventh.

It was at about that point that newguy89 started to stack up. First he snuck into the chip lead by about six big blinds after his Jâ™  J♥ held up against past SCOOP finalist SmallKindB for a 530,510-chip pot. SmallKindB struck back 10 minutes later with 7â™  7♥ , which made a set against NutsPow’s two pair with A♣ Kâ™  to move into the lead again and eliminate NutsPow in sixth.

Just three hands after that newguy89 took another pot from SmallKindB. He opened for 73,150 chips under the gun and was the only caller after SmallKindB re-raised to 218,000 in the cutoff. newguy89 check-called 139,620 on the 10♦ 2♣ 5♥ flop, then checked again on the K♦ turn. SmallKindB bet 477,885, only to be faced with a major decision when newguy89 check-raised all-in for 1.87 million. SmallKindB eventually mucked and newguy89 took down the 1.74-million-chip pot.

merla888’s stack had been swindling steadily since losing those two big pots early on. The Belgian tried to get back into the game by essentially calling all-in for 99,282 chips with Q♦ 9♦ after newguy89 opened the pot for 83,600. 86839337 re-raised in the big blind with A♦ K♣ , which made aces and kings on the 10♥ 8♣ K♦ A♣ 5♣ board to knock out merla888 in fifth.

newguy89’s one slip at the final table came a half-hour later. He was in the big blind with A♣ Jâ™  and the lone caller when 86839337 raised to 150,000 on the button. He checked with top pair on the 4♥ J♥ 6â™  flop, then raised all-in after 86839337 bet 180,000. 86839337 snap-called as a big favorite with K♣ K♥ , only to see the A♦ turn give newguy89 two pair. The 2â™  was no help and 86839337 left the tournament in fourth.

newguy89 had as many chips as both his opponents combined. Within 10 minutes he had picked up A♥ J♥ again and made top pair on the flop; this time it was a pair of aces, solidifying his lead after raising on the button and then calling when SmallKindB re-raised all-in for 1.65 million chips with K♥ J♠ . SmallKindB got no help from the 8♠ turn or 6♣ river and departed in third.

Scoring two consecutvie knockouts so late in the game had boosted newguy89’s stack to 5.74 million chips, good for a solid lead over com 157, who bubbled the Super Tuesday final last November. But it looked like com 157 might pull off a comeback after winning 15 of the first 20 hands, including a 1.6-million-chip pot, to move into the lead by 20 big blinds.

newguy89 stopped the bleeding when both players made a pair of sixes – newguy89 with A♣ 6♦ and com 157 with K♣ 6♣ – and managed to pull back into the lead before picking up A♣ A♥ on the same hand that gave com 157 J♣ J♦ . All the money went in before the flop, the board fell A♦ 6♦ 2â™  2♦ 2♥ , and newguy89 closed the book on the biggest outright win of his career here at PokerStars.
