It was an incredibly busy middle Sunday in the 2021 Turbo Series at PokerStars. Here’s a full rundown as records tumble for biggest prize pools and highest number of entrants…

TURBO TAKES

Matar flexes, wins big: In January, Michael “Biceps82” Matar celebrated his second-place finish in a Blowout Series event with a nice understated Tweet. There was a screenshot of the payouts table in which he earned $37,630, then the word “S’up” and a couple of emojis: one with shades on, the other with dollar signs for eyes. At that point, Matar was celebrating the biggest single win of his career, but flash forward a month or so, and he’s bettered it. Last night, Matar won the $1,050 buy-in 8-Max PKO in Turbo Series, which had 1,125 entries and a prize pool of $1.125 million. That’s the biggest prize pool of Turbo Series so far, and Matar’s first prize was $77,237, already double his previous highest. Then it just gets biggest when you also add in his bounties. Matar picked up a further $91,230 in bounty payments, for a total haul from the tournament of $168,468. That’s quite the income for a Sunday night, and we wait with bated breath for the tweet…

Another Ship FTW: Sweden’s “ShipitFTW911” has been shipping it for the win, for many many years, including in SCOOP, Stadium, and across the regular PokerStars slate of tournaments. This player’s documented online tournament scores sit at more than $4 million, according to Pocket Fives. Last night, ShipitFTW911 did it again in Turbo Series, beating out an all-star field in the $530 buy-in NLHE 8-Max, and banking $73,553. Dominik “Bounatirou” Nitsche was second, with Parker “tonkaaaa” Talbot in fourth. In all, the 882 entries produced a prize pool of $441,000.

Ramon Collilas keeping himself busy in Turbo Series

Collilas back to the final; Mukhin No1: Everyone at PokerStars is eagerly anticipating the return of live poker, particularly so that we can have another PSPC. While we wait patiently for that to be possible again, it’s good to see that the reigning PSPC Ramon Collilas continues to keep himself busy as that reign extends far longer than he might have expected. Collilas last night showed up at a final table in Turbo Series, picking up close to $10K for sixth place in the $215 6-Max last night. It was his first final table of the series, but shows that he’s keeping his eye in as he awaits his major title defence. Last night’s victory went to Russia’s “Mukhin1“, who banked $59,462 for defeating Japan’s “masa81814031” heads up, at the end of a tournament with 1,980 entries.

Jirout survives biggest field: Sunday night’s $22 “Double Deuce” set a new mark for number of entrants for a single-day tournament during this series. After 4,300 re-entries, the tournament hit 14,534, beating even the $11 hyper turbo from Turbo Series’ opening night. The last person clinging on at the end of eight hours’ carnage was FrantiÅ¡ek “Jirvey” Jirout, from the Czech Republic, who booked a win worth $34,961. Jirout’s social media presence suggests that he’s a keen online player, who has been at the grind for a few years. But this seems likely to be a new high. Congratulations to him. Beating that many players is a superb achievement, as is turning $22 into more than an average annual salary.

“xaltepico” closes out Phased event: The qualifier “single-day” is required in the entry above because of the Phased event, which has been running Phase 1s throughout the series so far. In total, there were 44,452 entries, which actually makes this the biggest tournament of the series. All the survivors of those phases came together last night to play to a winner, with Mexico’s “xaltepico” claiming the top spot and a staggering $38,530, after a three-way deal. This tournament had an $11 buy-in, so that’s a brilliant ROI. The final three players — xaltepico, as well as “Georcha” of the Czech Republic and “Agent Bear” of the UK — chopped it up, with each getting at least $32K. But xaltepico took the extra after winning the three-way duel, and also gets to claim the official title.

TWITCH WATCH

Spraggy played a lot of his Sunday night session with his friend and fellow streamer Parker “tonkaaaa” Talbot alongside him. (That’s virtually, not in the same room.) Although both had a couple of good results, these two clips show them trading bad beats. Firstly, Spraggy lost with the same hand twice, to the same player, who also had the same (inferior) hand on both occasions:

And then Talbot played a very weird, and very unlucky, hand where his opponent under called all in and, well, both players’ incredulity is plain to see

COUNTRIES LEADER BOARD

Players based in the UK picked up three titles on Sunday night, drawing the country level with Brazil at the top of the leader board. Brazilians could manage only two, so those two titan are tied with nine apiece. There’s one week left.

9 – Brazil, UK
6 – Netherlands, Russia
5 – Canada
4 – Germany
3 – Austria, Greece, Poland
2 – Belgium, Czech Republic, Hungary, Japan, Malta, Mexico, Romania, Sweden
1 – Argentina, Belarus, Estonia, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, Ukraine

TODAY’S ACTION

It’s a hold’em heavy rotation today, but a cheeky PLO8 lurks in there with a $109 buy-in if you fancy that. The $11 $60K Gtd event kicking off proceedings is the best one for the smaller bankrolls.
