What a day it was for Shaun Deeb! Not only did he ship his fourth World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) title, which ties him for most all time with Dan “djk123” Kelly, he welcomed his second child into the world!
Oh, he also broke his own record of most PokerStars “COOP” titles – which include wins in the WCOOP, the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP), and Turbo Championship of Online Poker (TCOOP). He now has nine titles on his “COOP” résumé.
A year after winning WCOOP-44: $215 NL Hold’em [4-Max] for his eighth “COOP” title, Deeb topped a field of 95 entrants (70 players; 25 re-entries) to win WCOOP-12: $1,050 NL Draw Championship for $22,185.60. The surpassed its $75,000 advertised guaranteed by creating a prize pool of $95,000. Among those to play in the event were Jason “jcarverpoker” Somerville, Brian “tsarrast” Rast, and Sebastian “p0cket00” Sikorski, though that trio failed to cash.
Just 11 spots were paid, and among five players to earn a payday but fall short of the final table were Adam “Adamyid” Owen (11th – 3,222.29), Andrey “Kroko-dill” Zaichenko (10th – $3,222.29), “CASINOICE” (9th – $4,244.88), Rachid Ben “SkaiWalkurrr” Cherif (8th – $4,244.88), and Team PokerStars Pro Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier (7th – $5,591.99).
Deeb made the final table as chip leader, and while that was an exciting development, it paled in comparison to what was going on back home.
“1/6 in the nl5card day2 in the big ante and wife water broke when we made day2 when we face timed GL to @crashleyonfire and baby Chance,” Deeb tweeted shortly after making the final table. “Wife face timed me from the hospital she just got to. Apparently she pushed the baby out while they were putting her in the room. 5min of labor.”
That’s right, while Deeb was plying his trade and making a living online, his wife Ashley was back home having the couple’s second child. Chance Deeb, 8lb 4oz and 22 inches, was born at 12:51 a.m. on Thursday, which according to Ashley was just 11 minutes after she checked into the hospital.
“scuel1975” & “ShipitFTW911” Hit the Rail Early
On Thursday, the final table of six kicked off at 10:00 ET with Deeb as the chip leader. However, he faced some stiff competition in the form of Dzmitry “Colisea” Urbanovich, who won a WCOOP title of his own back in 2014 (Event #36: $320 2-7 Triple Draw for $19,811.29).
Here’s how things stacked up during five-handed play after the elimination of Argentina’s “scuel1975,” a 2014 WCOOP champ for his win in Event #7: $215 NL Draw.
Shaun “shaundeeb” Deeb – 712,058
“thechips55” – 453,272
“OLD TIME GIN” – 381,703
“ShipitFTW911” – 202,673
Dzmitry “Colisea” Urbanovich – 150,294
Sweden’s “ShipitFTW911’s” demise happened with the blinds at 2,800/5,600/1,400 when Deeb (686,618) opened for 14,000 from the cutoff and “ShipitFTW911” (162,173) moved all in from the button.
Both blinds folded and Deeb called before drawing one cards. “ShipitFTW911” took three and then the cards were turned up.
“ShipitFTW911” failed to improve upon his aces, and he had to settle for fifth place and $7,366.60 in prize money.
High Fives No Good for Urbanovich
With the blinds at 4,000/8,000/2,000, action folded to “OLD TIME GIN” (433,917) in the small blind and he simply moved all in to put the pressure on Urbanovich (73,732), who called off from the big blind.
Both players drew three cards, and Urbanovich rolled over the 5♠5♣7♣6♥J♥ for a pair of fives. Unfortunately for him, it was no good as “OLD TIME GIN” had him pipped with a pair of sixes holding the 6♣6♦A♣2♣4♦. Urbanovich took home $9,704.38 for his fourth-place finish.
“thechips55” Straightened Out in Third Place
Not long after, “OLD TIME GIN” doubled through Deeb to take over the chip lead. A few hands later, he extended that lead by sending “thechips55” out the door in third place. It happened when Deeb (401,162) opened for 16,000 from the button and “thechips55” (391,240) three-bet to 49,000 from the small blind.
“OLD TIME GIN” (1,107,298) then four-bet to 136,000 from the big, Deeb folded, and “thechips55” moved all in. “OLD TIME GIN” called and then stood pat after “thechips55” drew one. “thechips55” tabled the K♠K♦10♣10♠5♦ for two pair, but it was no good as “OLD TIME GIN” had been dealt the wheel with the A♦2♣3♥4♦5♣.
Deeb Battles Back to Flush “OLD TIME GIN”
Heads-up play began with “OLD TIME GIN” holding 1,516,538 in chips to Deeb’s 383,462, but the poker pro refused to go down. On the contrary, over the next couple of hours he flipped the script, took over the chip leader, and pulled out to a big chip lead of his own.
In what would be the final hand of the tournament, which took place with the blinds at 8,000/16,000/4,000, Deeb (1,671,924) raised to 32,000 on the button and then called when “OLD TIME GIN” (228,076) three-bet all in. “OLD TIME GIN” drew three and Deeb stood pat.
“OLD TIME GIN” tabled the A♦A♠Q♥6♠2♠ for a pair of aces, but it wasn’t even close to good as Deeb was dealt a diamond flush with the K♦J♦10♦9♦2♦. “OLD TIME GIN” earned $16,841.05 for his runner-up finish.
“Shipped the NL Draw,” Deeb tweeted immediately after the win. “Got to slowroll the final hand to face time wife to show her I gave her the push present she wanted. GG to OLD TIME GIN.”
