WCOOP 2017: thehushpuppy wins the battle of the -COOP champions in Event #11 ($1,050 NL 5-Card Draw)

September 06, 2017

Would it be the Turbo Championship of Online Poker champ or the two-time Spring Championship of Online Poker and PokerStars Caribbean Adventure champ taking away the prize?

While the field for the 2017 World Championship of Online Poker’s Event #11 $1,050 5-Card Draw tournament was a diminutive 81 players, the $50K guarantee was still easily attained. After over ten hours of play, only the TCOOP champ thehushpuppy and PCA Main Event champ Mike “SirWatts” Watson would square off for the title. One would carry the second notch towards completing a Triple -COOP, the other would get another (potentially) 70 chances during this series.

It would take another hour for thehushpuppy to latch a second -COOP title, earning $17,969.90 after the four-way deal and now only needing a SCOOP title for the Triple -COOP.

Picking up the action with two tables playing down to six players, Mike “munchenHB” Telker was trying to head to another WCOOP final table after winning Event #42 in 2011. The Super Tuesday champ (that final table also featured Mike “SirWatts” Watson) was all-in holding queens facing gygenot09 who took two cards. The queens never improved but gygenot09’s quad sevens made sure Telker was not going to reach the final table, earning $2,025.00 in tenth place.

Alexander “joiso” Kostritsyn is a familiar name when searching past WCOOP results due to winning in 2010 and taking the chip-lead into the 2015 Main Event final table. But, like today, going home with a disappointing eighth place finish. Kostritsyn would double-up a shortened stack over eight hours into the tournament but two hands later thehushpuppy would silence the Russian pro who earned $3,037.50 for the effort.

Eight minutes later bedias would draw three and snag two pair but could not overcome Adam “Adamyid” Owen’s pat wheel, starting up the final table below:

Seat 1: Mike “SirWatts” Watson (1125496 in chips)
Seat 2: thehushpuppy (1453838 in chips)
Seat 3: gygenot09 (91426 in chips)
Seat 4: Gagarin007 (501989 in chips)
Seat 5: Adam “Adamyid” Owen (544322 in chips)
Seat 6: DSmunichlife (332929 in chips)

After a quick five-minute nap, nearly ten hours into the tournament gygenot09’s short-stack play for a WCOOP title would come to an end. This was not the first late run in a Draw event for gygenot09, making the final table of the 2014 Spring Championship of Online Poker Event #7-M. While gygenot09 scored $7,130.00 for third place at SCOOP, today only a sixth-place finish for $4,252.50 could be managed. Holding only a few fingers worth of blinds, gygenot09 shoved with a four-card straight flush draw, pitching one as Watson stuck around taking three cards. The straight nor the flush got there, 10♠ 4♥ 6♥ 5♥ 7♥ as Watson’s aces and tens K♠ A♣ 10♦ 10♣ A♥ took away the pot.

About an hour into the final table with thehushpuppy holding over half the chips in play, someone at the table need to make a sacrifice in order to add some muscle to challenge the chip-leader. Gagarin007 was kind enough to step up and provide some chips for Watson as the 2016 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event champ trips fives K♣ 5♦ 5♥ 5♠ 8♥ would hold up versus Gagarin007’s queens and sixes Q♠ 6♣ Q♣ K♥ 6♦ earning $5,670.00 in fifth place.

A few minutes later the foursome would hash out two important things. First, a four-way split of the remaining prize pool which gave all four players a five-figure payday. Secondly, and more important for this writer, they decided to finish out the tournament on the same day.

With the deal brokered, two players decided to continue to contribute towards Mike’s WCOOP title-run fund. Adam Owen was attempting to capture his first -COOP after coming perilously close during the SCOOP series this year as the runner-up in Event #5-M. But, Watson’s hot streak continued after calling the all-in pre-draw with a pair and grabbing a second pair J♣ J♦ K♠ 4♣ K♣ to knockdown Owen’s dealt two pair 7♠ 7♥ 6♦ Q♦ 6♣ in fourth place ($11,409.01)

Three hands later DSmunichlife shoved eight BBs with a couple of threes but could not improve A♠ 3♦ Q♥ 3♠ 8♣. Watson, showing no mercy, would sweep the leg with a pair of kings 6♣ 2♦ K♣ K♦ J♥ handing DSmunichlife $11,394.44 in third place.

After the late game bulldozer run by SirWatts, he would take the chip-lead into heads-up play.

Seat 1: SirWatts (2109602 in chips)
Seat 2: thehushpuppy (1940398 in chips)

We got a little bit longer of a break than expected after a request to speed up the five-minute hourly break tripped some wires and triggered the overnight break. Thankfully the manager was on hand to plug the dealer back in sooner than the listed 14 hour wait.

Sorry, no confetti this time for Mike “SirWatts” Watson – runner-up $15,116.65

It a good run for SirWatts as the PCA champ would spar with thehushpuppy for over an hour. Trading the chip lead back-and-forth until a decisive hand put Watson fully on the defensive. After a three-bet pre-draw by Watson, thehushpuppy would call taking three cards. Mike drew one and led out for 525,000 leaving a little over 600K behind. Thehushpuppy pounced on the bet with a shove that Watson had no answer for, leaving him with around 18 BBs.

Six hands later a post-draw shove-bluff with ace-high 3♣ Q♦ 7♥ A♦ K♠ would get snap-called by trip fours 7♦ 8♠ 4♠ 4♦ 4♥ as thehushpuppy claimed the 2017 WCOOP Event #11 title and $17,969.90!
