German poker players, again, made their decisions and played their European hearts out while the Americans and Canadians slept. As North American dreams consisted of the team score rounds today, the Germans were actually at their tournament seats and playing for the honor of their respective provinces.

Last weekend, a total of 32 players qualified to play today. Upon their return, they were placed in four groups to compete for the chance to take their province into the Division Germany round. The groups were as follows:

Group 1: Bremen, Hamburg, Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein
Group 2: Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Sachsen-Anhalt
Group 3: Baden-Württemberg, Bayern, Sachsen, Thüringen
Group 4: Hessen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Saarland

One province from each group emerged victorious as points were given for the place in which each player finished at their table. Three of the individual provinces performed perfectly and secured spots in the division round – NiceBet_1985 and MaxPro 101 each finished first for Berlin, TomTomSnow and DeepBlue3112 each won for Nordrhein-Westfalen, and nobody I and Jo1701 clinched first place in their tournaments for Sachsen. And it was close for the Hamburg team, as 1Man@work took first in that round but noregretsall took third. However, the closest team to beat was Brandenburg with two second place finishes, but the points total got Hamburg into the final four. In the end, the four final teams were determined, and the following players would go on to Division Germany:

Group 1: Hamburg – 1Man@work and noregretsall
Group 2: Berlin – NiceBet_1985 and MaxPro 101
Group 3: Sachsen – nobody I and Jo1701
Group 4: Nordrhein-Westfalen – TomTomSnow and DeepBlue3112

From here, there are others who will join the team as it stands thus far. There will be Round 1 qualifiers taking place on November 27th and 28th to determine the two freeroll tournament players who will continue on. In addition, the top four tournament leaderboard (TLB) players in Germany, as determined by points from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2007, will automatically qualify for the Germany 1 or Germany 2 team, and the top finishing TLB player will have the option to be the captain of Team Germany 1. The second place TLB finisher will subsequently be able to captain Team Germany 2.

With that said, there is one goal in mind. Each of these players wants to play an integral role in taking Team Germany to the World Cup of Poker V in the Bahamas in January of 2009. There is a world championship title at stake, not to mention the trip to one of the most beautiful resort islands in the world to play a little poker and soak up some of the Caribbean sunshine. It is the chance of a lifetime, and all of these weeks of qualifiers and playoffs will ultimately end there. Not a bad place to finish it up.

Congratulations to all of the German players who took their provinces to the next round! To follow along with their journey and see the next steps of the series, visit the World Cup of Poker V page.
