What is slated to happen at the World Series of Poker tonight is the poker equivalent of the Ghostbusters crossing their proton streams. Team PokerStars Pros Viktor Blom and Vanessa Selbst will both be headed back to the Rio tonight and are in positions to light up the poker world.

Blom finished Day 3 of the 2012 WSOP $50,000 Poker Players Championship with…get this…the chip lead. It took a miracle card against Joe Cassidy at the end of the night to do it, but with 26 players remaining, Blom sits atop the star-studded field. At stake is one of the biggest titles in poker and more than $1.4 million. Also, lest we forget, for years the poker world has looked upon Blom as a heads-up hold’em and Omaha specialist. To get this far in one of poker’s toughest fields, Blom has been forced to play eight different games. Anyone wondering whether Blom is the real deal might want to pay attention tonight. So far, the players haven’t even hit the money (the top 16 get paid). That is to say, there is a long way to go before we crown anybody with anything. Nevertheless, it’s going to be electric.

Meanwhile, with 25 players remaining in the $2,500 No-Limit Hold’em event, Selbst is fourth in chips and deep in the money. Already guaranteed more than $20,000, Selbst has her eye on the gigantic $694,609 first prize. As you might already know, Selbst got very close to a big win in the first open event of the year. She placed fourth for $161,345. Whatever happens tonight, Selbst is lined up to make her third cash of the 2012 WSOP.

Indeed, as I look at the photos above, I’m reminded of Egon Spengler’s timeless prediction of what happens when you cross the streams: “Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.”

That’s sort of what I expect to happen tonight if Blom and Selbst both pick up gold bracelets.

Everybody, duck and cover.
