The combined field of days 1A and1B united today, spread out across three rooms, playing for a place in day three.

Having been granted at least one day off since then they were probably eager to return to action. But just as the enjoyment of that day was determined by the stack they returned to this afternoon, the likelihood of similar enjoyment tomorrow will depend on what they bagged up tonight.

On that basis Team PokerStars Pros can count themselves among them, in varying degrees on content, with Ivan Demidov, Jan Heitmann, Joe Cada, Leo Margets, Liv Boeree, Mathias de Meulder and Mikhail Shalamov all set to return on Thursday.

Alas, it was the end of the road for the likes of Toni Judet, Barry Greenstein, Fatima Moreira de Melo, Johnny Lodden, Luca Pagano, Eugene Katchalov, David Williams, Maxim Lykov, Vicky Coren (set under set) and Chris Moneymaker; their World Series over for another year. They each endured the long walk and the process that involves, as we examined earlier. Meanwhile Team Online were demonstrating formidable talent for transferring their online talents into the toughest of live environments.

As many players were coming to terms with their performance, Shane Shlager, who also departed, asked whether they were trapped in a Happiness Epidemic that was busy turning defeat into triumph. This didn’t apply to Adrienne Rowsome of course, ever smiling regardless, and intent on celebrating her first wedding anniversary on Thursday with the traditional gift of paper. Preferably green, and with pictures of Presidents on it.

So as players file out of the Rio after another five levels attention now switches to Day 2B, starting at noon tomorrow. That will feature all of those who survived the enormous field of Day 1C yesterday. At stake a place in day three, when the field will finally unite for the first time. Happiness is not guaranteed.
