When Jennifer Shahade began Day 2 of the 2016 World Series of Poker Main Event, she had had only 62,000 chips, barely more than the 50,000 starting stack she received just for buying in. She played the very first flight, and when it was over, she was less than pleased.
If there is one benefit of playing Day 1A, it’s the ability to recover from a troublesome starting flight.
“The two-day break was good,” Shahade said.
If you work your way through the crowd in the Brasilia room, you’ll find Shahade now sitting on around 240,000 chips, a feat she achieved by doubling up in the first level of the day and then grinding from there. It was reason enough to jump for joy.

While this is good news by any measure (no member of the PokerStars team has as many chips at this hour), Shahade knows there is long way to go. After all, she’s been deeper than this before, and she knows where it can all go wrong.
Despite having several WSOP cashes through the years, she has not managed to cash in the Main Event. She got very close to the money, but she’s yet to break the bubble in the Main.
It’s still early days.
In fact, if the forecasts hold, it could be Friday’s Day 4 before Shahade has any chance to make the money. That would mean one more day off, a full Day 3, and then the start to Day 4.
Nevertheless, the lady behind the shiny glasses has more reason to smile than anyone else with a PokerStars patch today, so we’ll all celebrate with her for now and see what she can do with the rest of the day.
