Anton Morgenstern arrived today with what amounted to no chips. And a spider shirt. More on that in a second, but first, about the chips.
Sure, he had 25 big blinds at the beginning of Day 5, and that’s not even a danger zone, but it had to feel like almost nothing when people had heaps–millions– of tournament winning chips. It was 400,000 on the dot. It looked like nothing compared to chip leader Jon Lane’s 2,839,000.
But Morgenstern, a German PokerStars Main Event Passport winner, had a plan. And, yes, a spider shirt. Both have worked out for him.
The shirt is black with a menacing red spider on the front. It’s scary, if you look at it the wrong way. But it’s working.
I once used to wear underwear with sharks on them when I went to play poker. It never went well. Morgenstern? His sartorial choices seem to have worked better.
Tonight, as he returns from the dinner, he is among the chip leaders.
After starting the day with 400,000, he came back for the penultimate level of the night with…wait for it…3.7 million. He’s in the top five players with only a hundred left in the field.
There is a lot that could happen in the next four hours. And there’s a lot that will happen over the following two days.
But keep your eye on this kid. It seems he’s got his eyes on leaving Vegas this year with chips and then making a return trip in November.
