Stephen Chidwick: €2K winner

The concept of the “trip saver” is well known among all traveling professionals. It roughly translates from poker speak to mean a big win in a side event that just about covers lost buy-ins and expenses accrued in less successful visits to the field of conflict.

You might want to ask Stephen Chidwick about the concept this morning.

The British pro has played the €50,000 Super High Roller, the €25,000 Single Day High Roller and the Main Event, all without success so far this week. But he hit the zone over the past couple of days in the €2,000 no limit hold’em event #63, beating a field of 307 to a €119,400 first prize.

Chidwick has been playing this game long enough–and is easily smart enough–to ensure that he’s never really going to have an uncomfortable amount of his bankroll on the line, regardless of a barren spell. But he’s also still going to be delighted with any six-figure live score, the 14th of his career.

He also won the equivalent of this event in Malta in March, when he had to beat Eugene Katchalov to the title. This time around, Chidwick defeated the French player Romain Lewis heads up and it was an exceptionally tough field again.

Simon Deadman was fourth, Govert Metaal ninth, Josip Simunic and Dietrich Fast were 11th and 12th. Davidi Kitai was 14th, Luc Greenwood 19th and Fedor Holz 22nd. It was that kind of tournament.

Final table players: Back row: Stephen Chidwick, Alexandru Papazian. Middle: Kevin Andriamahefa, Didier Betito, Romain Lewis. Front: Simon Deadman, Deddi Or-Paz, Sergey Sergeev.

Chidwick now has career live tournament winnings of more than $4.3 millon, about a quarter of which he has picked up previously in Prague. A couple of seasons ago, he made the final table of the Main Event in both the Eureka and the EPT in the Czech capital, and last year’s third place in the Super High Roller here was among the best of his career.

In many ways, yesterday’s triumph was among the most predictable of the week. He now has the €10,000 High Roller, which kicks off today, to boost the Prague earnings even further.
