The 2022 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) really hit its stride on Monday night, with famous winners aplenty and the South American dominance beginning in ominous fashion. Read today’s action-packed bulletin below…

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Gusma had one of those nights

Spectacular night for Gusma ends in two podium spots: Pedro “gusmaa” Gusma had one of those rare and brilliant nights in SCOOP last night that come around every so often. The Brazilian crusher, who won a first title last year in a $109 PKO event, made two huge final tables on the second night of this year’s SCOOP, winning one title and finishing second in another. Gusma was in the same $2K final as Lex Veldhuis, and fans of the latter’s stream will have seen Gusma knock out Lex, holding pocket queens in the big blind after Lex shoved the small blind with ace-three. GG Lex. Gusma went on to finish second to Andre “PTFisherman23” Marques, who you might remember won the WCOOP Main Event in 2020, and now has a first SCOOP title. Gusma wasn’t done, however. He also had chips in the $1,050 buy-in Sunday Warm-Up, and this time he took them all the way to the title, defeating Ami “UhhMee” Barer heads up. Gusma took $98,854 for that win, added to more than $75K in the other one. That makes a very good night. Marques, by the way, won $123,216, including a bounty haul of $73,820. He’s the one in the bottom left in picture at the top of this page, talking through his WCOOP win.

Another for Onodera: Back in January 2021, a Brazilian player called Eike “Mr. Havener” Onodera qualified for the Big Blowout! in the Blowout Series for free, and went all the way to the final table, via a $109 satellite, into which his freeroll earned him entry. He ended up winning $167,000 and was very happy indeed — as he told us at the time. Later that year, he won his first SCOOP title, in a $55 buy-in event, and last night he won another! This victory came in the SCOOP 02-M: $55 NLHE SCOOP Kickoff, over a field of more than 5,000 entries. It came with a payday of $39,036. Onodera’s career continues to go from strength to strength.

Ylitalo had the better of the EPT champs

Ylitalo wins again after EPT champions’ deal: There were two former EPT Main Event champions among the final three players in the $530 buy-in SCOOP Kickoff event last night: Sweden’s Robin “robinho” Ylitalo and Andrey “ThePateychuk” Pateychuk, who now represents Belarus. They were joined by Brazil’s “carloshmz” and the three of them, respecting one another’s game, opted to strike a three-way deal. Pateychuk, who won EPT Sanremo in October 2011, had the biggest stack and so took the most — $53,559 — but it was Ylitalo, who won EPT London in October 2013, who ended up taking the title this time, alongside a prize of $52,159. That turned Ylitalo into a double SCOOP champion, having won in this series in 2020, and adding another accolade to his career. carloshmz finished second, with Pateychuk officially third, still hunting a maiden SCOOP win, even though he picked up the most from this tournament.

Brazilian dominance in SCOOP-03L

Brazil being Brazil: After missing out on a title from the very first day of SCOOP this year, Brazilian players roared back with a vengeance on Day 2 of the series. Pedro “gusmaa” Gusma and Eike “Mr. Havener” Onodera, discussed above, were two of five Brazilian winners — and the country’s dominance was never so apparent than in the $11 Sunday Warm-Up, where seven of the eight seats at the final table were occupied by Brazilians. The player known as “cautiioN” ended up taking it down, striking a heads-up deal with the lone non-Brazilian, “viinirypäle”, from Finland. cautiioN won $14,803 for the second SCOOP win of their career, having previously triumphed in a $109 buy-in event in 2019. Other Brazilian winners yesterday were “bergue12” and “rickroger10”.

Sunday Million claimed by Montenegro: Last year in SCOOP, the early stages were all about Dejan “dejanlc357” Kaladjurdjevic, who won three titles in the opening week. In doing so, he became the first player from Montenegro ever to win a SCOOP title. The fact he ended with three made it even more special. Kaladjurdjevic is no longer the only Montenegrin with a SCOOP title, however, as a player named “vvdmm” last night won the $215 Sunday Million Special Edition, also under Montenegro’s flag. vvdmm picked up $150,386 for the win, the biggest score of SCOOP so far. Montenegro is back!

It’s not SCOOP, but…: While they were playing their big Day 2s in a couple of early SCOOP tournaments, Lex Veldhuis and Spraggy also fired up a few more tables. Neither is adding to their title haul with SCOOP wins overnight, but Spraggy shipped the $5K day saver event, while Lex also won a $530 buy-in event in the High Roller club for more than $30K, including bounties. It was all streamed live.
