A round-up from the United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) festival in Nottingham, where more than £1 million in prize money was guaranteed and some of the best players in Europe turned out to play. Report compiled by UKIPT Media Coordinator.

Adam Maxwell has won the United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) Nottingham £1,100 Main Event, outlasting a field of 582 entries to win £98,150. The Main Event paid 87 places from a prize pool of £564,540.

There was also a packed schedule of side events at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham, including a £5,000 Super High Roller event, won by the British pro Scott Margereson, and a £2,200 High Roller, won by Gary Miller, for £51,730.

There was more than £1 million in tournament guarantees through the week-long festival, which concluded July 31.

LOCAL CASH GAME PRO ADAM MAXWELL WINS £98,150 IN THE UKIPT NOTTINGHAM MAIN EVENT

Adam Maxwell, 27, saw off the last of his opponents in the £1,100 Main Event, picking up £98,150 after a heads up deal with eventual runner up Jonathan McCann, who took home £74,500 from the £564,540 total prize pool.

Day 3 of the Main Event brought back nine competitors, seven of whom are current or former professional poker players. The final table was initially led by David Ledden, who quickly busted short stack Tom Simm, winning an all-in preflop flip to set the official final table of eight. Half an hour later, another flip saw off Phil Clarke (eighth for £12,780), who had started the day second shortest in chips.

Alex Montgomery was next out in seventh place, continuing his close-but-no-trophy run of recent final table appearances. German online pro Fabio Sperling, who is based in Ramsgate in the UK, fell in sixth (£21,610), shortly before chip leader Ledden grew his stack still further by busting Daniel Gormley in fifth (£28,080).

Michael Howard was eliminated in fourth place (£36,500) by McCann, who rivered a flush to beat Howard’s pocket kings to briefly take the chip lead before Maxwell knocked out Ledden in third (£47,460). Play then paused as the final two players discussed a deal, agreeing to award Maxwell £81,010 and McCann £74,500, with the trophy and £17,140 left to play for.

Heads up play lasted around 90 minutes, with Maxwell maintaining a near 2:1 chip lead throughout. With his stack having dwindled to around 15 big blind, McCann made his final move all in preflop with K4. Maxwell, with A8, made the call and held. His victory keeps Nottingham’s UKIPT 2022 Main Event trophy in town.

“It feels very good – it’s not quite sunk in yet,” Maxwell said, before reflecting on the heads-up duel. “It was a tough battle but I feel like the cards went my way.”

Maxwell said that the turning-point for him stack-wise was the bubble, where he accumulated a lot of chips, and his years of experience (mainly playing cash) put him in good stead thereafter.

GARY MILLER WINS £2,200 HIGH ROLLER FOR £51,730
The two-day High Roller tournament, with £200K guaranteed, concluded well after the Main Event had crowned a champion, the slow structure allowing for a hard and long-fought final-table battle.

Twenty-one players returned on Day 2 (from a starting field of 95), with Alex Goulder in the chip lead. Goulder ended up with third place (worth £23,840), Tan Luan Le finishing second for £33,000, while Gary Miller took the trophy and £51,730 first prize.

KATHLEEN PADOVANI TAKES DOWN £340 UKIPT CUP FOR £23,513

Kathleen Padovani won the 413-entry UKIPT Nottingham Cup, after 62 combined Day 1 survivors returned to claim ever-increasing pieces of the £120,183 prize pool. The largest prize went to the sole female side event winner at UKIPT Nottingham, her biggest ever live tournament cash.

When a few players had been eliminated from the final table, Vincenzo Lupoli went on a rush and bust four opponents in very quick succession, leaving Padovani the only player standing between him and the trophy.

Although Lupoli had more than three times Padovani’s stack at this point, the speed with which they had reached the heads up stage meant that there was still plenty of play. Padovani fought back to even, then took the chip lead, repeatedly offering a deal to her opponent which was politely declined.

While the dealer was shuffling what was to be the final hand of the event, Padovani, now with the huge lead herself, offered a deal one last time. The answer was still no, and her nine-ten spiked two nines vs. Lupoli’s king-deuce to bring the tournament to a close.

Padovani’s daughter Sonia gave her a hug – as did vanquished opponent Lupoli – saying, “You won the trophy, England women won the football – it’s ladies’ day today!”

Sonia and friends had been railing Padovani throughout and stood alongside playing the theme from Rocky when her trophy photo was taken.

SCOTT MARGERESON WINS £5,300 SUPER HIGH ROLLER FOR £56,159 AFTER HEADS UP DEAL

British pro Scott Margereson — known online as “Aggro Santos” — won the £5,300 buy-in Super High Roller at UKIPT Nottingham after a heads-up deal with recent WSOP bracelet winner Harry Lodge.

The tournament was still accepting entrants at the start of Day 2, and it ended up with a total field of exactly 40, playing for a prize pool of £194,000. Start of day chip leader Rob Yong busted just before the money bubble, allowing Margereson to head a final table that also featured well-known pros Henrik Hecklen, Alex Goulder and Mitchell Johnson.

Johnson went out in seventh, Goulder in fifth and Hecklen in third, at which point Lodge and Margereson arranged their deal. Margereson closed it out to take £56,159 with Lodge taking £50,341.

ANDY WILSON WINS REGIONAL TOUR MAIN EVENT TICKET IN ACTIVITY WINNERS’ HYPERTURBO SNG

On the final day of the UKIPT festival, six players competed in a bonus sit n go thanks to their success in either a pub quiz arranged by PokerStars streamers Georgina “GJReggie” James and Mason “Pye_Face21” Pye, or at the Go Karting track. The bonus tournament was over before the Main Event began, with prizes awarded to all:

1 Andy Wilson – Regional tour Main Event seat
2 Angus Foster – €400/£340 Road to PSPC seat
3 Oli Hutchins – €33 Road to PSPC satellite ticket
4 Peter Santamaria-Woods – €33 Road to PSPC satellite ticket
5 Dode Elliot – €33 Road to PSPC satellite ticket
6 Nikolay Ponomarev – €33 Road to PSPC satellite ticket

The top three were the full quiz team, followed by the racers. Oli Hutchins is a current Platinum Pass holder (so can’t win another one), while Nikolay Ponomarev was a Platinum Pass winner last time round, so could potentially bag a second – perhaps at the next Road to PSPC event held here at Dusk Till Dawn, August 25-29.
