Off to the side of the feature table where the Main Event is playing out, the $25K High Roller final table has at times appeared a much less ostentatious, humble affair in the early going.Â
One exception to that rule was the boisterous rail supporting Nacho Barbero during the first hour-and-a-half of the final day. The lone Argentinian at the final table — looking to add a PokerStars Championship Bahama trophy to his trio of LAPT titles — had enjoyed a small but vocal group of supporters. But when Nacho’s chips disappeared, so did they.Â
It was after a J♠7♥ 3♣ flop that Barbero went for an all-in check-raise holding eight-seven for sevens and leader Nick Petrangelo matched his bet with queen-jack for the better pair. Blank-blank went the board, and Barbero was bounced in sixth for $208,400.
Leader Petrangelo had increased his edge, with fellow big stacks Luc Greenwood and Michael Rocco continuing to chip up as well. Soon enough those three were all over 2 million, with Byron Kaverman and Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu both at less than half a milly.
They were approaching the first break of the day when Negreanu doubled once through Rocco — queen-ten offsuit managing to outrun king-jack suited for the Team Pro.Â
Alas for Negreanu, he didn’t fare as well in the next all in versus Petrangelo.Â
Again Negreanu was a preflop underdog with ace-jack versus ace-queen, his chances becoming even slimmer after two queens appeared on the flop. “Good flop for me,” Negreanu grimly grinned, and after two cards and a quick jog to the cashier’s table he was collecting $268,780 for finishing fifth.
The remaining four soon left for the break, with Petrangelo — having knocked out four of five so far today — even further ahead and Kaverman currently the most vulnerable.
