It was the first Sunday of the 2020 Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) and it was every bit as exciting as you might expect. Squeeze in, it’s standing room only. Here’s the very latest…

TODAY’S HEADLINES

• Busiest Sunday draws thousands to SCOOP tables
• “Advanced moan” works for new champ Owen
• UK top-dog Beresford adds second title
• Holz among superstars joining High Roller action

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Room at the inn? The busiest day on the SCOOP calendar so far meant 18 tournaments starting, of which three played to a winner, as well as the completion of six of Saturday’s events. To the surprise of no one, the numbers were huge. The $215 Sunday Million Special Edition attracted 9,935 players, with the prize pool nearly doubling its guarantee, while the $2,100 Sunday Million High Roller brought out the best in the world. The top 15 of the 42 remaining overnight includes Fedor “CrownUpGuy” Holz, Jorryt “TheCleaner11” van Hoof, Sami “Lrslzk” Kelopuro, Pedro “PaDiLhA SP” Padilha and Sam “SamSquid” Grafton.

A full constellation for the High Roller: The $10,300 High Roller was another star studded affair, with both Van Hoof and Holz in the last 11 of that tournament too. Rui “RuiNF” Ferreira, Andras “probirs” Nemeth, Daniel “Oxota” Dvoress and Charlie “Epiphany77” Carrel are also still involved, with $271,790 up top. Meanwhile, Max “goodeh99” Silver leads the $2,100 PLO, which is down to its last 35 and in the money.

Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford

Top Brit is top Brit again: Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford is almost always in or around the top 10 in the online player rankings on Pocket Fives, and usually sits at the very top on the UK charts. With more than $10.5 million in documented tournament earnings across all sites, it’s easy to see why. Last night Beresford added a second SCOOP title to his bulging trophy cabinet, winning the $215 buy-in Sunday Cooldown, beating a field of 3,120 entries. Beresford won $38,579.25 from the main prize pool and a further $36,515.90 in bounties for a total haul of $75,095.15. That’s only the eighth biggest win of a spectacular career.

Adam “adamyid” Owen: Moans one in

Moaning and binking: Globetrotting Brit Adam “adamyid” Owen spent the early part of yesterday getting in what he described as an “advanced moan” on Twitter about where the guarantee had been set for the special edition Sunday Million. (He thought it was too low.) But Owen also had the good humour to admit: “Just want to be the dick who moans about the excellent tournament then binks it.” Here’s the bad news: Owen is out of the Sunday Million before the money. However, he did do a bink. That came in SCOOP-09-M – $55 Afternoon Deep Stack, where Owen beat a field of 7,898, including three-time Sunday Million champion Artem “veeea” Vezhenkov heads up, to win $55,531.49. (Moans or not, we have a lot of time for Owen at PokerStars Blog: much of his time, and his money, goes to some very good causes.)

Massive score for Passiveaggro: Russia’s “Passiveaggro” was the night’s biggest winner when he or she picked up the title in the $1,050 buy-in PKO event, which attracted 1,157 entries. With a bounty payout of $82,200.12, more than the first-place prize, Passiveaggro’s total haul came in at $161,844.81. “thegodfisher” of the UK won the medium buy-in version and “marakana1965” of Greece took down the low.

INTERVIEW! INTERVIEW! INTERVIEW!

William “Williaml666” Barbosa was one of the early winners in this year’s SCOOP and, as he told Martin Harris in our exclusive interview, it was the “best feeling ever”. Read everything Barbosa had to say as he reflected on his $69,000 win. FULL INTERVIEW

TWITCH WATCH

Two terrific multi-way hands here from Lex Veldhuis’s Sunday night stream.

The first started with a shove from bracelet winner Roman “Roma-Tilt” Korenev, who got a quick call. Veldhuis re-shipped with pocket sixes, and it wasn’t even slightly done yet. (Note: Veldhuis is still alive, placed 40th of 41 remaining in the $530 PKO, with $40K up top.)

In the $2K, Veldhuis woke up with kings in the cutoff and laid a trap, which you could say worked to absolute perfection:

TOP TWEETS

Nice and simple from new SCOOP winner Adam “adamyid” Owen:

What’s better than a royal flush? How about a royal flush when your opponent has a full house? That’ll do. Lukas “lukas_robo” Robinson was the man on the right side of this cooler, and got paid in full by the looks of things:

STARTING TODAY

Day 5: Monday, May 4

“Only” four events (ie, 12 tournaments) kick off today, but there’s great subtlety and variety among them. First up it’s fixed limit hold’em, which will be greeted by groans by many, but whoops (getting bigger by fixed amounts) among the purists. We then have a six-max PKO hold’em event, a format that everyone seems to say they prefer, but which someone actually has to be quite bad at. (There’s a $1 million guarantee on the $530 buy-in version.) And then there’s a dangerous looking no limit PLO hi/lo event, which really separates the bad from the even worse. Thankfully, we end up with a sedate and normal NLHE affair, with a $11 low buy-in. Set your brain straight, and lick your wounds, with that one.

12.05pm ET – Event 19: Fixed-Limit Hold-em
Buy-ins: $11, $109, $1,050
Guarantees: $12,000, $25,000, $60,000

1pm ET – Event 20: NLHE 6-Max PKO
Buy-ins: $5.50, $55, $530
Guarantees: $100,000, $500,000, $1 million

2.15pm ET – Event 21: 8-Max No Limit Omaha Hi/Lo
Buy-ins: $5.50, $55, $530
Guarantees: $15,000, $50,000, $100,000

3.30pm ET – Event 22: NLHE
Buy-ins: $11, $109, $1,050
Guarantees: $50,000, $200,000, $300,000
