Usually when we speak of horror stories here at the PokerStarsBlog, it ends something like this “… and the two-outer hits on the river to send Team PokerStars pro Greg Raymer home in third place”. Ah, but this is Halloween when tales of Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers keep us peering one last time into the closet just to make sure there’s no unwanted strangers waiting for us to go to sleep. The only frightful thing on the minds of the 4,680 players in tonight’s $750,000 guarantee Sunday Warm-up was that huge $146,839.68 first prize. Enough money to go buy your own bag of treats since trading the chance to go trick-or-treating for a chance at a six figure win seems like a better financial decision.
675 players would get at least $318.24 after pierott77 busted in 676th place just after the four hour mark. Unfortunately for Gualter Salles, Martha Herrera, Anders “Donald” Berg, Jude Ainsworth, Veronica Dabul, Toni Judet, Andre Akkari, Tae Joon Noh, Pete De Korver, Matthias De Meulder, Victor Ramdin, Randy Lew there was no money dropped into their trick-or-treat bags tonight.
Team PokerStars Pros Darus Suharto (457th place $355.68), George Danzer (317th place $449.28), and Maxim Lykov (208th place $561.60) made the cash but no dash to the final table.
2010 SCOOP Main Event-high champ toetagU was staring down yet another big final table sitting on the penultimate table with an average stack, but it wasn’t meant to be. He would tangle with cal42688 after three bet shoving for 2.6 million with blinds at 80K/160K ante 16K holding ATo as it folded back to cal42688 who quickly called with big slick and the king kicker played on the 3♠ A♦ 4♠ Q♠ 6♥ board to send the champ home in 13th place ($4,212.00) and send cal42688 to the top of the leader with almost 10 million in chips.
cal42688’s luck would turn sour shortly before the final table during hand-for-hand play getting number two in chips Catenaccio all-in pre flop with pocket queens versus cal’s pocket aces. But, a queen on the flop saved Catenaccio’s tourney and shipped the huge 15.7 million chip pot to Catenaccio while knocking cal42688 back to a little over four million.
SCH007 was in danger of blinding off several times and with the blinds at 100K/200K ante 20K he would call Catenaccio’s min-raise from the big blind with just 53,758 left after paying the big blind with A♣ 9♥ hoping for another breath of life. Catenaccio turned over K♠ Q♥ and found a nice king on the turn 3♠ 5♠ 5♦ K♣ 7♠ knocking the persistent short-stack SCHOO7 out of the tourney as tonight’s final table bubble boy in tenth place ($5,616.00).
Seat 1: kavindaaa (7065540 in chips)
Seat 2: cal42688 (2905753 in chips)
Seat 3: hardez_surgu (1406582 in chips)
Seat 4: Catenaccio (17831939 in chips)
Seat 5: SomogyiRicsi (2511780 in chips)
Seat 6: funnygut (3265128 in chips)
Seat 7: kbp00 (3079288 in chips)
Seat 8: Levan1971 (5371924 in chips)
Seat 9: joran1 (3362066 in chips)
The final table would play extremely fast tonight with the blinds already at 100K/200K ante 20K and only one player (Catenaccio) with over 40 big blinds. Sure enough the rapid fire eliminations came in during the final table’s first blind level.
Not cal’s night
After that heart-breaking hand that would have given cal42688 a monster chip lead going into the final table he would find himself all-in on the final table’s second hand. In a blind versus blind confrontation cal42688 would call kavindaaa’s open small blind shove holding Q♥ K♣ . But, kavindaaa was not playing the part of chip bully and held the goods flipping up big slick A♠ K♥ . The 9♦ 9♥ 8♠ J♠ 5♥ board provided no excitement for cal42688 as ninth place ($7,488.00) was sure to be a letdown after that bad beat before the final table. Chalk up another big score for cal42688, not as big as the WCOOP bracelet won a couple of month ago after taking down Event #17 for $15K.
House full of ladies
Just four hands later Levan1971 would make a standard 3x big blind raise to 600K from UTG as it folded to hardez_surgu who had just 1.1 million but put it to good use by shoving while holding pocket tens 10♥ 10♣ . Folded back to Levan1971 who would make the call holding Q♣ A♥ setting up a race that ended quickly. Two ladies on the flop and a boat on the turn 7♣ Q♦ Q♥ 7♥ K♥ was enough to send hardez_surgu home in eighth place ($11,700.00).
kbp00 isn’t laughing
Three eliminations in seven hands, we said this would be a quick one as two hands later funnygut would min-raise from the cutoff as kbp00 tried to shove from the button for 2.6 million and collect the growing blinds who folded to the raise. Back to funnygut who made the call holding A♦ Q♦ as kbp00 rolled over the dominated A♥ 10♠ . A hand that would stay dominated after the 6♥ K♠ 9♥ 8♥ 9♣ board despite a gutshot straight draw and flush draw on the river, kbp00 was given $21,060.00 for the efforts in seventh place.
A breather of sorts
The players would wait a whole 11 hands until the next players found a seat on the rail. Watch below as our sixth place finisher is named:
joran1 would shove UTG for 3.1 million with the blinds still at 100K/200K ante 20K as kavindaaa re-raised to 6.2 million to shut out the remainder of the table. joran1 showed pocket kings K♠ K♥ as kavindaaa had one pip better with aces A♣ A♠ . Ace on the flop 4♠ 2♦ A♦ 6♦ 5♠ put the hand virtually out of reach as joran1’s cooler earned him $30,420.00 in sixth place.
Level of death
The 100K/200K ante 20K blind level would claim yet another tournament life as chip monster Catenaccio opened from the small blind enough to put big blind SomogyiRicsi at risk. SomogyiRicsi would call for 3.2 million showing A♥ J♣ and in decent shape to double up against Catenaccio’s Q♦ 8♦ . And after an ace flopped 5♦ A♠ 7♦ SomogyiRicsi just needed to fade the diamond draw. 4♦ on the turn and the unnecessary K♦ on the river gave Catenaccio the flush, another seven million in chips and one less opponent as SomogyiRicsi was out in fifth place ($39,780.00).
A punch to the gut
As the blinds moved up to 125K/250K ante 25K, funnygut started falling behind with just 3.8 million and found Q♥ A♥ on the button. Instead of playing around, funnygut would shove as kavindaaa snap called from the big blind in another cooler holding big slick A♠ K♥ . The all-low 6♠ 2♦ 3♦ 3♠ 8♦ board made kavindaaa’s king kicker surpreme as the 7.9 million chip pot slid into his stack while funnygut’s night at the improv was over in fourth place ($52,884.00).
Light squabble ends well
Once Levan1971 managed to even out the chip counts after doubling up off Catenaccio, the three gathered Anders “Donald” Berg’s calculator to figure out some chop numbers and give us three players with six figure scores tonight. Catenaccio balked at the suggestion of an even chop despite similar stacks so kavindaaa finally gave in and went along with the chop numbers below:
$10,000 left aside for tonight’s champion and three content players hustled back onto the playing field as the blinds were moving up to 150K/300K ante 30K.
Aptly timed monsters under the bed
Being Halloween maybe these players should have been checking for ghouls and other monsters under their laptops before shoving in their chips. Watch the hand below that names our third place finisher:
Aces versus kings once again at the final table, Levan1971 held the aces A♥ A♣ as Catenaccio turned over the suddenly weak looking pocket kings K♦ K♥ . An ace on the flop and finishing with a four flush that bad beat himself 5♣ A♠ 6♣ 4♣ 10♣ as Levan1971 scooped up the 22.9 million chips and Catenaccio would not get the extra $10K but picked up a six figure score after the chop in third place ($109,153.53). Catenaccio acted like he has been here before and it showed, in February Catenaccio also placed third in the Sunday Warm-up taking in $75K.
Levan on a jet plane with an extra $10K
Just as the tournament clock hit 10 hours, and in the second heads-up hand between Levan1971 and kavindaaa we would name this week’s Sunday Warm-up champion. With the blinds at 150K/300K ante 30K our final two seemed more interested in gambling as they would get it in preflop with hands that were a little less strong than the cards being turned over tonight. After a four-bet all in by kavindaaa holding 4♦ 5♥ and a call by Levan1971 with pocket treys 3♥ 3♣ , kavindaaa was surprised to be in just a position stating “lol overcards”. Indeed for the race that was almost won by those overcards spiking a five on the turn Q♠ 2♣ 6♣ 5♣ but the river found one more club Q♣ to match the one in Levan1971’s hand to give him the 23.9 million chip pot and the extra $10K for becoming this week’s Sunday Warm-up champion!
