WCOOP 2021: Moorman wins maiden title, Vieira makes it six, and Shakerchi secures second of series on Day 12

How had Chris “Moorman1” Moorman never won a WCOOP?
Moorman completes incredible COOP year: Spark up a debate over the greatest online tournament players of all time and if Chris “Moorman1” Moorman’s name doesn’t come up, you’re talking to the wrong people. The Brit–now playing from Mexico–dominated online MTTs for the best part of a decade and with $18.9 million in online cashes, according to PocketFives, he’s one of the biggest winners in history. But incredibly, despite having won just about everything else there is to win in poker, Moorman hadn’t won a SCOOP or WCOOP prior to 2021. He fixed the former back in May, winning a $1K SCOOP 6-Max for $78K. Now he’s won his first WCOOP title to go with it, defeating a 2,629-entry field to take down the $109 4-Max Turbo PKO (59-M) for $15,684 plus $12,854 in bounties ($28,538 in total). It’s absurd it took him this long, but his legacy as one of the GOATs was never in doubt.
Denis Strebkov: WCOOP’s leading light
“RaúlGonzalez” goes back-to-back: On Friday we were left wondering whether the greatest player in WCOOP history, Denis ‘aDrENaline710’ Strebkov, could capture a record-extending 10th WCOOP title with five left in the $10K 8-Game High Roller (52-H). What we failed to mention was that the defending champion, Germany’s “RaúlGonzalez”, was also still in the mix, looking for his second WCOOP win. He won this same event last year for $235,530, and last night he pulled off an incredible back-to-back, taking it down again for $196,176. Strebkov would have to settle for second ($128,480), while Ari “BodogAri” Engel (3rd – $84,144), Yuri “theNERDguy” Martins (4th – $55,107) and Joao “Naza114” Vieira (5th – $36,091) rounded off the FT cashes.
Great series so far for Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi
Second of the series for Shakerchi: Over in the medium edition–the $1,050 8-Game (52-M)–it was online force Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi who was the last player standing. Shakerchi topped the 130-entry field for $29,225 and added a second WCOOP title of the year to his CV, his third overall. He’d already won a $1K badugi event in 2020, and less than a week ago won his second in a $5K Turbo PKO for $124,688. The money might be smaller this time around, but for a businessman as successful as Shakerchi, you can bet it isn’t about the money. It’s about the glory and the trophies, and his mantlepiece is going to be full of them. He beat Player of the Series competitor “Camilancefieldg” of Canada heads-up, after a final table which included Luke “lb6121” Schwartz, Denis “aDrENaline710” Strebkov, and “Premove”.

Speaking of Premove…: Russia’s “Premove” fell in fifth in the $1K 8-Game, but they went on to win the $1K NL 5-Card Draw (58-H) for $18,048 later on Saturday night, capturing their fourth WCOOP title. Previous wins have come in NL 2-7 single draw (2018) and NLO8 (2018 & 2020). To get the job done this time, Premove had to beat Jussi “calvin7v” Nevanlinna–an absolute beast looking for his sixth WCOOP title. He did just that, forcing Nevanlinna to settle for second and $11,820.
Vieira makes it six
Vieira victorious for 6th title: Joao “Naza114” Vieira is online poker’s all-time money winner and a perennial COOP winner, so it’s no surprise to see him take down yet another title in 2021. After his fifth-place finish in the $10K 8-Game, Vieira–who is Portuguese but now lives in the Netherlands–went on to win the $1K NLHE 4-Max PKO Turbo (59-H), outlasting 273 entries and overcoming Dalton “daltonhb” Hobold and Patrick “pads1161” Leonard on the FT. Vieira is currently ranked second in the world, according to PocketFives, and sits atop the all-time earnings board with more than $25.7 million. Astonishing. With this win and his $1K freezeout victory earlier in the series, he now has six WCOOP titles, tying him with Tobias “senkel92” Leknes for third all-time, plus three SCOOP titles.
Other top stories from Day 12: Brazil’s “Eduardo850” won their first WCOOP title in 49-H, a $1K NLHE event, for $65,435, while also finishing second in the $2K Thursday Thrill PKO High Roller (51-H) for $71,175 plus $29,953 in bounties. Not a bad day’s work, we’re sure you’ll agree. It was Sweden’s “Omanstrom” who took down 51-H for $74,175 plus $100,499 in bounties for their maiden title, also denying Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet who placed third for roughly $83K (including bounties). Another WCOOP legend, Tobias “senkel92” Leknes, also came close to capturing a title, which would have been his seventh. Leknes finished runner-up in the $109 8-Game for $8,718, but Russia’s “dmitrich10” took it down and banked $12,366. Finally, Canada’s “RPILON” navigated their way through a monstrous final table in the $2K Turbo (60-H)–which included Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi, “WhatIfGod”, and Niklas “Lena900” Astedt–to win it all for $69,353.

Brazil’s Pablo “pabritz” Brito leads a pack featuring Jans “Graftekkel” Arends, Andras “probirs” Nemeth, Stevan “random_chu” Chew, Joao “Naza114” Vieira, Vanessa “niffller” Kade, and Mike “SirWatts” Watson. They’re all guaranteed $6,799 but there’s $62,901 up top.
• Jans “Graftekkel” Arends is also down to the final 20 in the $530 6-Max PKO (57-H), which returns to action tonight. He’ll have to oust the likes of Bruno “great dant” Volkmann, Francisco “Tomatee” Benitez, and “Old brock” if he’s to capture the $39,308 first-place prize.
TWITCH WATCH
Ben “Spraggy” Spragg was a huge favourite to triple up on Day 2 of the $2K, but a nasty river saw the Team Pro bust to eventual champ, “Omanstrom”.
