When looking around at the tables for the beginning of Day 3 of the 2014 ACOP Main Event it dawned on me that exactly half the field is going to be very disappointed today.
One in every two people will be turning their HK$100,000 investment into at least HK$202,000 and the others will be heading home with no cash for their time.

Perhaps more importantly, those who do survive Day 3 and make it into the cash will keep themselves in contention for the HK$6,300,000 top prize. That’s more than US$800,000.

Right now the player who is making the best run at that cash is a very experienced Canadian poker pro by the name Sorel Mizzi.

Mizzi managed to bag up 439,900 on Day 2, which was leaps and bounds ahead of Terry Gonzaga with 309,700. Mizzi seemed to dominate his table and winning a massive pot with pocket aces against Samantha Cohen’s pocket kings, all in preflop, didn’t hurt either.

There is already almost US$10 million in tournament results on Mizzi’s resume and well over US$ 1 million of that was posted this year. His largest result was actually in this region when he finished runner-up in the Aussie Millions Main Event for AU$1 million.

Both the Aussie Millions and the ACOP are part of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour and so if Mizzi can continue his run today he will certainly have one of the better records on Season 8 of the tour.

Mizzi isn’t the only ‘notable’ player still alive to kick off Day 3. Also in the top five counts is Terrence Chan. We caught up with Chan on Day 1 and talked to him about his “retirement” from the game. He might need to rethink that retirement if he wins the ACOP. Or perhaps he will just retire with a much larger bank balance.

Also still alive is a player who has done this all before – Sunny Jung.

Twelve months ago, Jung lifted the 2013 ACOP Main Event trophy and claimed more than US$550,000. It’s a much larger field this year, and a much larger prize pool, but Jung is looking comfortable at the tables and will certainly be one to watch.

2014 Aussie Millions champ Ami Barer, Joseph Cheong, Daniel Colman and recent WSOP APAC victor Scott Davies, Mike McDonald, Billy “The Croc” Argyros, MPC20 champion Buyanjargal Bold and Dan Smith are some of the others still alive to begin Day 3.

There are also two Team PokerStars Pros at the felt in Celina Lin and Raymond Wu.
Both of these players are very familiar with winning tournaments here at PokerStars LIVE Macau and will be hungry to win the ACOP and continue growing their reputations as two of the best players in Asia.

With such a great structure it’s going to take a while to get into the money, but we are playing six 90-minute levels and it’s a certainty that the bubble will burst at some stage throughout the day. It’s even likely that we will only be left with two or three tables to close out the day.

You will be able to follow the Day 3 action right here on the PokerStarsBlog. There are “live” reports at the top of the 2014 ACOP page, while there will also be feature stories posted throughout the day.
