PokerStars is celebrating its 20th Anniversary: 20 years as the best known and most trusted online poker site. Here at PokerStars Blog, we are looking back year-by-year on those two decades, noting the landmarks and remembering all the remarkable moments, fitting them into the wider landscape of poker’s sensational development.

Today we return to 2014…

The PokerStars Blog has been publishing its Year in Review since 2005. There have been many big years of news, but none so much as 2014. Since the last time we compiled the biggest news of the year, PokerStars changed owners for the first time ever, Victoria Coren Mitchell became the first and only person to win a second European Poker Tour Main Event, the poker world lost Chad Brown, George Danzer won three World Series of Poker bracelets and the WSOP Player of the Year Award, Daniel Negreanu made it into the Poker Hall of Fame on the first ballot, and PokerStars dealt tourney number one billion.

Those were just the biggest stories of the year. Along the way, there were dozens more tales in the live and online arenas that once again prove why PokerStars is still the biggest and best online poker company in the world. We’ve compiled the best of those stories here.

This is the tenth consecutive year we’ve put out the Year in Review, and each year our readership has grown. We’re proud of the millions of times you’ve logged on to our pages over the past twelve months, and we look forward to being with you for another decade. JANUARY

DANIEL NEGREANU NAMED POKER PLAYER OF THE DECADE–The year began with news that the Global Poker Index had named Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu as its Player of the Decade, which was no huge surprise after his stellar 2013 that saw him win two World Series of Poker bracelets.

RAFA WINS FIRST CONTEST OF 2014–Rafa Nadal started his year with a win after defeating Gael Monfils at the Qatar Open.

FABIAN QUOSS WINS 2014 PCA SUPER HIGH ROLLER–If you didn’t know who Fabian Quoss was at the start of the year, you certainly knew by the end of the 2014. He kicked off the PCA by winning the Super High Roller for $1.6 million.

MEXICO WINS AMERICAS CUP OF POKER–As the PCA raged around it, Team Mexico won its very first Americas Cup of Poker at Atlantis in the Bahamas.

KATHY SARAF WINS PCA WOMEN’S EVENT…AGAIN–Not entirely satisfied with her 2012 PCA Women’s Event victory, Kathy Saraf returned to win it for a second time.

JAKE SCHINDLER DENIES VANESSA SELBST BACK-TO-BACK HIGH ROLLER WIN–At one point during the $25,000 PCA High Roller, it looked like Team Pro Vanessa Selbst was going to win it for the second year in a row. Instead, after Selbst placed third, Schindler defeated WSOP champion Greg Merson for the title.

DOMINIK PANKA WINS 2014 PCA MAIN EVENT–It looked as if Mike “Timex” McDonald might win the PCA and become the first person to win two EPT titles. Instead, upstart hero Dominik Panka won the title for $1.4 million.

DEAN HUTCHINSON BEATS LIV BOEREE FOR UKIPT EDINBURGH TITLE–In yet another in a series of near-misses, Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree finished second at UKIPT Edinburgh as Dean Hutchinson took the title for £93,000.

BOLD WINS MPC FOR MONGOLIA–Until 2014, no player of Mongolia had ever won a major poker title. That changed when Buyanjargal Bold took down the Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon.

SHAWN BUCHANAN WINS FIRST TRIPLE COOP–There aren’t many tournament regulars who don’t know the name buck21. Good reason for that. He wins a lot of tournaments. During the Turbo Championship of Online Poker this year, he won the first ever Triple COOP (a win in all of the PokerStars COOP series). He talked more about it HERE.

RAFA DEFEATS ALL OF SPAIN–Rafa Nadal started a series of online matches in which he would take on huge pools of players. The first of the year was against the country of Spain. He came away with an easy victory.

FEBRUARY

DOMINIK PANKA WINS EPT DEAUVILLE HIGH ROLLER–After winning the 2014 PCA, Dominik Panka went immediately to EPT Deauville where he shocked everyone with a rookie of the year performance that earned him the High Roller title in France.

SOTIRIOS KOUTOUPAS WINS GREECE’S FIRST EPT TITLE–It took fighting Team Pro Eugene Katchalov in a heads-up battle at EPT Deauville, but Sotirios Koutoupas managed to become the first person in history from Greece to win an EPT title.

JAMES OBST JOINS TRIPLE COOP CLUB–Just a few days after Shawn Buchanan earned the first-ever Triple COOP title, James “Andy McLEOD” Obst made it a club by winning a TCOOP event and joining the Triple COOP ranks.

RIVERLAN_88 WINS TCOOP MAIN EVENT–As always, the Turbo Championship of Online Poker seemed like it flew by in a flash. It didn’t go by so quickly that Riverlan_88 couldn’t manage to grab the Main Event title. It was a huge win, but when the entire series was over, Christian Elgstrom had won Player of the Series.

POKERSTARS NAMED ONLINE POKER OPERATOR OF THE YEAR–For the second consecutive year, the International Gaming Awards honored PokerStars as the Online Poker Operator of the Year.

AMI BARER WINS 2014 AUSSIE MILLIONS–In a short and sweet heads-up contest, 22-year-old Ami Barer defeated Sorel Mizzi for the AU$1.6 million payday at the Aussie Millions.

VICTOR ANTORANZ WINS ESPT MADRID–The Estrellas Poker Tour Main Event in Madrid drew more than 700 players. When it was done (and after a three-way deal), Spain’s Victor Antoranz took the trophy home.

ERIC HOLLREISER NAMED AS GAMING INTELLIGENCE HOT 50–When Gaming Intelligence started looking for some of the top names and faces in gaming, the Rational Group’s Head of Corporate Communications was an easy pick.

MARCUS HELLNER WINS GOLD IN SOCHI–Not to be outdone by fellow PokerStars SportStar Rafa Nadal, Marcus Hellner traveled to Sochi for the winter games and brought home gold.

RAFA BOUNCES BACK IN RIO–After getting sidelined for a few weeks with a bad back, Rafa Nadal traveled to Rio and picked up another 2014 victory.

YONGJUN MA WINS ACOP PLATINUM SERIES–PokerStars Macau kicked off a banner year with an ACOP Platinum Series event that drew nearly 1,000 people. When it was done, Yongjun Ma had emerged with the win.

MARCH

PATRICK MAHONEY WINS ANZPT PERTH–The USA’s Patrick Mahoney started off the month by making his trip Down Under worth it. He won ANZPT Perth for AUD $120,000.

SUNDAY MILLION CELEBRATES 8TH ANNIVERSARY–When the Sunday Million came around for its 8th anniversary, it slapped an $8 million guarantee on the festivities. That meant a payday of more than $1 million for winner DrUPSWING.

KEVIN KILLEEN KNOCKS OFF UKIPT DUBLIN–In one of the most colorful wins in UKIPT history, hometown hero, Kevin Killeen won UKIPT Dublin, denying Max Silver another UKIPT title.

BRITISH POKER AWARDS TAP TEAM PRO, EPT–March brought awards season, and in Great Britain, the British Poker Awards saw fit to honor Team PokerStars Pro, Team PokerStars Online, the EPT, and tournament director Toby Stone.

WALKER TRECCARICHI WINS IPT SAINT VINCENT–The IPT tour made its way to Saint Vincent in March and found a winner in Walter Treccarichi. He banked more than €87,000 for his win.

HAO CHEN WINS 2014 MACAU MILLIONS–Hao Chen didn’t only win the 2015 Macau Millions (an accomplishment in itself). He won the biggest tournament ever held in Asia.

RAFA EDGES THE WORLD IN ZOOM CONTEST–Rafa Nadal headed to the Sony Open in Miami, Florida, USA. While he was there, he got together with Daniel Negreanu for a contest versus the rest of the world.

ZOLTAN GAL WINS EUREKA VIENNA–In what was the biggest ever Eureka event, Zoltan Gal traveled to Vienna to win a first prize in the Main Event with more than €200,000.

MARIO LOPEZ TAKES TITLE AT LAPT CHILE–The first event of the Latin American Poker Tour’s seventh season took players to Viña del Mar, Chile where Argentina’s Mario Lopez banked $109,000 for the win.

JOSH REDHOUSE WINS ANZPT SYDNEY FOR HIS HOME GAME–After playing in a home league to win his seat to ANZPT Sydney, Josh Redhouse won it all for more than AUD $133,000.

RAINMANRJA MAKES IT RAIN IN MICROMILLIONS–The buy-in was only $22, but the MicroMillions 7 Main Event prize pool climbed north of $1.2 million. The UK’s RainmanRJA won it all for $78,000.

NATALIE HOF WINS FIRST TITLE–Friend of PokerStars Natalie Hof went to Vienna hoping to win something, and win something she did. She took down her first event in the EPT Vienna Women’s Event.

FABRICE SOULIER WINS EPT VIENNA HIGH ROLLER–He had to hold back a few tears, but longtime rounder Fabrice Soulier managed to persevere to win the EPT Vienna High Roller Event.

UKRAINE GETS FIRST EPT CHAMPION–The EPT nearly made it through ten full seasons without a champion from Ukraine. Oleksii Khoroshenin made sure that didn’t happen and took home a first prize worth more than half a million euros.

TOM MIDDLETOWN BEATS STAR-STUDDED FINAL TABLE FOR WCOOP CHALLENGE SERIES TITLE–At a final table that featured the likes of David Baker and Bryn Kenney, Tom “hitthehole” Middleton won $500,000 in the WCOOP Challenge Series Main Event.

APRIL

REDEMPTION OF THE SEOUL ON APPT–One year earlier, Chane Kampanatsanyakorn had finished runner up. He sought redemption at APPT Seoul and found it in a championship win.

FABIO SPERLING WINS ESTRELLAS VALENCIA–Although he’d made a deep and profitable run in the 8th anniversary Sunday Million, Fabio Sperling had never cashed in a live poker tournament. His first cash? €77,000 and a title victory at Estrellas Valencia.

SELBST TAKES DOWN NADAL…ON THE FELT–Vanessa Selbst is more of a basketball player than she is a tennis player, so she took on Rafa Nadal at the game she plays best. In a heads-up poker match, Selbst beat Nadal in an exhibition match in Monte Carlo.

OLE SCHEMION BESTS HIGH ROLLER FIELD AT EPT SANREMO–EPT heavyweight Ole Schemion won a whole bunch of money playing the high roller at EPT Sanremo, but his win was more significant than that, because it also earned him EPT Player of the Year honors.

VICTORIA COREN MITCHELL MAKES HISTORY ON EPT–After nearly ten full seasons and nearly 100 Main Events, the European Poker Tour still lacked a two-time champion. Victoria Coren Mitchell, the EPT’s first-ever female winner, changed that when she won EPT Sanremo to become the only person in EPT history to win two times.

KEN WONG BESTS ACOP PLATINUM SERIES FIELD–He was a well-known name without a title to call his own, but Kenny Wong finally took one home after winning the ACOP Platinum Series event in April.

DAN COLMAN WINS EPT GRAND FINAL SUPER HIGH ROLLER–By now, everyone knows the name Dan Colman, but before last April he only had one five-figure score to his name. He made sure everybody knew who he was when he took down the EPT Grand Final Super High Roller for more than €1.5 million.

MAY

OLE SCHEMION WINS EPT PLAYER OF THE YEAR–Wunderkind Ole Schemion put on an EPT masterclass in Season 10, cashing 14 times, making three Super High Roller final tables, and earning more than $2.1 million. It made him–easily–the EPT Player of the Year.

PHILIPP GRUISSEM TAKES DOWN GRAND FINAL HIGH ROLLER–If there was a man made for high rollers, it’s Philipp Gruissem. He finished off his EPT season by winning the EPT Grand Final.

ANTONIO BUONANNO WINS ONE FOR THE OLD GUYS AT EPT GRAND FINAL MAIN EVENT–Who says only kids win poker tournaments anymore? Forty-seven year-old Antonio Buonanno went to the grandest Main Event of the year and won the whole thing for poker’s middle-agers.

RAFA NADAL WINS IN MADRID–Rafa Nadal might have dropped a match here or there in the early part of the year, but he made it clear he was all the way back when he took down the title in Madrid.

DUNCAN MCLELLAN WINS SECOND UKIPT TITLE–When Duncan McLellan won his first title at UKIPT Isle of Man, there were a few people who said it might have been a fluke. McLellan shut everybody’s mouth when he won again in Nottingham.

GEORGE DANZER COLLECTS FOURTH SCOOP TITLE–In a move that would foreshadow Team PokerStars Pro George Danzer’s best year, he picked up his fourth Spring Championship of Online Poker title.

JASON MERCIER GETS ANOTHER SCOOP TITLE FOR TEAM PRO–Not to be outdone by Danzer, Jason Mercier jumped into the second half of SCOOP and won the $215 8-game title.

CALVIN ANDERSON WINS SCOOP PLAYER OF THE SERIES–It was a year that saw titles from huge names like Scott Clements, Scott Seiver, Dan Cates, Bryn Kenney, James Obst, Luke Schwartz, and David Bach. The Main Event titles featured Ari Engel and Zimnan Ziyard. In the end, though, it was superstar Calvin Anderson who won a record-tying fifth SCOOP watch and then went on to win Player of the Series.

JIAJUN LIU GIVES CHINA ANOTHER APPT TITLE–We saw a lot of amazing celebrations this year. Jiajun Liu victory at APPT Macau was one of the best.

MARTINS ADENIYA WINS UKIPT PLO EVENT–Every once in a while, everybody needs to play a little four-card poker, and every once in a while a tour needs to mix things up. That’s what happened when the UKIPT hosted a Pot-Limit Omaha Main Event. Martins Adeniya took it down.

RONALDO BLUFFS, GETS BLUFFED–Football legend Ronaldo proved in May that he is a pretty good bluffer, but he also learned he’s vulnerable, too.

VANESSA SELBST WINS THIRD WSOP BRACELET–As the 2014 World Series of Poker kicked off, Vanessa Selbst became only the second woman in history to earn three WSOP titles, and she did it all before the age of 30.

JUNE

MARTIN MECIAR WINS RECORD-BREAKING EUREKA STOP –In what was then the largest-ever standalone tournament on the Eureka tour, PokerStars qualifier Martin Meciar came away with the €87,000 victory.

CAIO HEY TRIUMPHS IN BRAZIL ON LAPT –Victor Sbrissa was looking to make it a repeat win at LAPT Brazil, but Caio Hey denied him the win and took the victory for himself.

NADAL WINS FRENCH OPEN –Rafa Nadal doesn’t lose at Roland Garros. He simply doesn’t. This year, he defeated rival Novak Djokovic for the win.

GEORGE DANZER GETS FIRST WSOP BRACELET–Just a few weeks earlier, George Danzer had never won a live tournament. After winning a side event at the EPT Grand final and a SCOOP title, Danzer went to the WSOP and won the Razz event for more than $294,000.

RODRIGO ESPINOSA SEALS SPAIN VICTORY IN MARBELLA–It was like a holiday for the UKIPT when it traveled all the way to Marbella, but in the end, the title went to a Spaniard, Rodrigo Espinosa.

DANZER DECLARES SUMMER OF GEORGE, WINS SECOND WSOP BRACELET–No, it wasn’t a misprint. Just a few days after winning his first WSOP bracelet, George Danzer won his second.

DANIEL NEGREANU BAGS HUGE BRACELET BET–Remember that time Daniel Negreanu bet anyone with money that either he or Phil Ivey would win a WSOP bracelet this year? Negreanu sure does.

FRIENDS SAY GOODBYE TO JOHANNES STRASSMANN–Johannes Strassmann was an up-and-coming player who had charmed everyone on the EPT. The poker community had to say goodbye to him in June after he died in an accident.

AMAYA AGREES TO ACQUIRE RATIONAL GROUP–In the very biggest news story of the year, Amaya agreed to purchase the Rational Group, owner of PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker, for $4.9 billion. The deal finalized in August.

JULY

NEGREANU BANKS $8.2 MILLION IN ONE DROP–Daniel Negreanu might not have won the Big One for One Drop this year, but his runner-up finish earned him an $8.2 million payday.

POKER WORLD LOSES CHAD BROWN–Chad Brown, one of poker’s most beloved players, died of cancer this year at the age of 52. These were some of the stories we shared about him as his friends and family remembered Downtown Chad Brown.

DUONG BATTLES BACK TO WIN APPT MANILA–After coming into heads-up play with a nearly 1-to-5 deficit in chips, Thanh Ha Duong came all the way back for the win.

FABIAN ORTIZ WINS SECOND LAPT TITLE–Fabian Ortiz had once come back from a single small blind to win an LAPT tournament. After traveling to LAPT Panama, he made history again by becoming only the second person in history to win two LAPT Main Events.

69FABIAN69 WINS MICROMILLIONS MAIN–Twenty-two bucks isn’t a big buy-in, but 69FABIAN69 turned it into more than $107,000 in the MicroMillions Main Event.

MASSIMO PELLEGRINO DRINKS FROM THE CUP ON IPT–He’d never had a major victory, but Massimo Pellegrino went to St. Vincent and earned a refreshing title on the Italian Poker Tour.

CHEN QIN WINS RECORD-BREAKING BEIJING MILLIONS–In the largest tournament ever staged outside the United States, China’s Chen Qin won kept the title at the Beijing Millions.

AUGUST

GRAYSON RAMAGE WINS WCOOP CHALLENGE SERIES MAIN EVENT–The full World Championship of Online Poker was still a month away, but Grayson Ramage couldn’t wait, so he entered the Challenge Series Main Event and won more than $289,000.

POKERSTARS 7 ARRIVES IN BETA–It had been a long time since PokerStars delivered a brand new lobby, but in August it began the beta roll-out of PokerStars 7.

ZHENRU XIE BRINGS RED DRAGON BACK TO CHINA–There hadn’t been a Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon winner since 2012, but Zhenru Xie changed that when he won the trophy in August.

OLIVIER BUSQUET BESTS PROTEGE IN EPT BARCELONA SUPER HIGH ROLLER–When the EPT Barcelona Super High Roller reached heads-up play, it was Olivier Busquet vs. his protege Dan Colman. It ended with the elder taking the title.

EPT BARCELONA BREAKS ALL THE RECORDS–This year, the EPT Barcelona Festival saw the largest PokerStars freezeout, Super High Roller, High Roller, Main Event in Europe, and just about everything else.

SOIKA BESTS MERCIER IN EPT BARCELONA HIGH ROLLER–It was a record-breaking High Roller and the first of EPT Season 11. Team Pro Jason Mercier got heads-up, but the title went to Ihar Soika.

ANDRE LETTAU WINS HISTORIC 100TH EPT MAIN EVENT–The EPT made history with its 100th Main Event in Barcelona. Germany’s Andre Lettau cut a deal at the final table with Sam Phillips. While Phillips made more money, Lettau got the distinction of champion.

SEPTEMBER

EDISON NGUYEN BESTS ANZPT MELBOURNE–It took 16 hours of play, a lot of coffee, and some Red Bull, but when it was all said and done, Edison Nguyen had one ANZPT Melbourne and more than AUD $200,000.

PAUL FINDLAY WINS UKIPT SERIES 6–Injured war veteran Paul Findlay proved poker was nothing compared to his previous life and made easy work of the UKIPT Series 6 field.

RAFA DEFEATS WORLD IN PRACTICE FOR RONALDO–While prepping to take on Ronaldo in a poker duel, Rafa Nadal practiced against the world and came away with a victory.

RICCARDO LACCHINELLI WINS IPT SANREMO–At the second IPT final table, Riccardo Lacchinelli managed to come out with a win at EPT Sanremo.

FEDOR HOLZ WINS WCOOP MAIN EVENT–This year’s World Championship of Poker featured big name after big name. In just a few weeks, we saw titles from the likes of Ryan Welch, Sami Kelopuro, Mikal Blomlie, Scott “Aggro Santos” Margereson who won two bracelets in three days, David Baker, Adam Levy, and Paul Volpe. But at the end it was Fedor “CrownUpGuy” Holz who took the Main Event title for $1.3 million. Player of the Series went to (not Daniel) Mr Negreanu, aka Alan Gold.

OCTOBER

JOSH HART WINS UKIPT ISLE OF MAN–The UKIPT headed back to PokerStars HQ in October. When the festival was done, Josh Hart had snagged the £57,000 first prize.

ISAI SCHEINBERG WINS UKIPT HIGH ROLLER–In one of our favorite stories of the year, PokerStars’ most recognizable founder, Isai Scheinberg, won the UKIPT High Roller shortly after leaving the company.

BRETT ANGELL BEST FIELD AT UKIPT LONDON–It was time for the UK & Ireland Poker Tour to finish up its season, and it did so in style in London. Brett Angell had almost won a title in Nottingham, so in London, he made sure to go the whole way to win for more than £115,000.

GEORGE DANZER WINS WSOP PLAYER OF THE YEAR–After an amazing year at the WSOP that saw Team PokerStars Pro George Danzer win three gold bracelets, the World Series of Poker named Danzer its Player of the Year.

SEBASTIAN PAULI BECOMES 100TH EPT MAIN EVENT CHAMPION–Because Victoria Coren Mitchell won two EPT Main Events, it took until the 101st Main to crown the 100th champion. It happened in London when Sebastian Pauli won the title.

POKERSTARS ADDS SPIN & GO TOURNEYS–In late October, PokerStars introduced the wildly popular Spin & Go tourneys that let players win many, many times their buy-in.

OSCAR ALACHE TAKES DOWN LAPT PERU–Nearly 700 people signed up for the LAPT Main Event. It took a three-way deal to get it done, but when it was finished, Chile’s Oscar Alache hoisted the trophy.

NOVEMBER

STEVE O’DWYER BANKS BIGGEST CAREER RESULT AT ACOP–Steve O’Dwyer is no stanger to seven-figure wins, but his most recent and biggest came in November when he banked $1.8 million at the ACOP Super High Roller.

LE JOSSEC RUINS JUNG’S BACK-TO-BACK DREAMS–Sunny Jung was just one spot away from winning back-to-back ACOP Main Event titles. He played a marathon heads-up match in the fight, but in the end Gabriel Le Jossec took the win away from him.

PHILIPP HARTMAN WINS KING’S CUP–This year, PokerStars sponsored the King’s Cup in Rozvadov, and Philipp Hartmann performed a wire-to-wire act for the win.

FABIAN QUOSS FINISHES ACOP WITH HIGH ROLLER WIN–There is no deny Fabian Quoss. The German ran hot all year long, including banking the win in the ACOP High Roller.

DANIEL NEGREANU INDUCTED INTO POKER HALL OF FAME–In the very first year he was eligible for the Poker Hall of Fame, Daniel Negreanu made it onto the ballot. On the very first year he was on the ballot, he got the nod for induction.

RAFA SENDS RONALDO TO THE KITCHEN–Rafa Nadal took on football legend Ronaldo in a heads-up match. The loser, in this case Ronaldo, had to wash dishes for a night.

NGUYEN GETS HIS WIN IN AUCKLAND–Minh Nguyen put on am amazing performance at ANZPT Auckland. It took some flipping at the end, but when it was over, he had the title.

POKERSTARS WINS GAMING AWARDS–As the year neared its close, eGaming Review Magazine named PokerStars its Poker and Mobile Gaming Operators of the Year.

DECEMBER

KOFI89 WINS POKERSTARS TOURNEY #1,000,000,000–It took more than 13 years to do it, but PokerStars finally dealt tourney #1,000,000,000. Kofi89 won it all for the $329,000 first prize.

EPT UNVEILS BOOK COMMEMORATING TEN YEARS–After ten seasons of the European Poker Tour, it was time to put the best of the best together to commemorate ten years of the world’s biggest poker tour.

MISS FINLAND BLUFFS THE SHARK CAGE–What happens when a beauty queen sits down at the Shark Cage table? Not exactly what you’d expect.

ALESSIO ISAIA WINS AT IPT SANREMO–The Italian Poker Tour finished off its year in Sanremo, and Alessio Isaia took home the €43,000 prize.

BALAZS BOTOND WINS RECORD-BREAKING EUREKA MAIN EVENT–More than 1,700 people signed up for the Eureka Prague Main Event, and Balazs Bontond beat them all for more than €200,000 in prize money.
