There’s nothing more exciting in poker than the one-outer. All the chips are in the middle, and one player is left with nothing but one single card in the deck to win the pot. One faint hope. One last breath. To put it in numbers, they are around a 2% chance to win. It’s not impossible, but it’s not the sort of spot you want to be in.

But then it happens! From the clouds, your perfect card lands on the felt. It’s the most beautiful card you’ve ever seen. The crowd erupts and you feel like you’ve just won the lotto.

Then there’s the other side of the equation.

Nicolas Oger did get a little lucky. He caught an ace on the flop holding A♥ K♣ which put him in the lead against David Lim’s K♥ K♦ . Oger was a 98% favourite to win the hand with just the river card to come. His stack was about to be doubled up, and he was about to be right in contention for the ANZPT Auckland title. Then it happened.

River: Kâ™

The crowd on the rail of the SKYCITY Auckland Casino roared as the case king, the one-outer, had just appeared before our eyes. Lim had struck gold while Oger was in shock. The Frenchman had just been eliminated with the fall of a single card.

Oger took it well, thanking the table before heading off to the cashier to collect NZ$26,265 for 5th place. It’s a great return for a wonderful time here in Auckland, but for as long as he lives, he’ll never, ever forget that devastating king of spades.
