The players are now off to enjoy their first ten-minute break of the day.
1:25pm: Stoltz stays strong
Andrew Stoltz appears to still be the big stack of the field with his early double up seeing him sit on 43,000 chips. A couple of PokerStars qualifiers are progressing well with Shivan Abdine (35,000), Ian Parnell (29,000), Qi Xu (26,000) and Mishel Anunu (23,000) all above their starting stacks.
1:04pm: Quads paid off for Whitford
So far, so good if you’re Rhonda Whitford after her quads received maximum value from Gary Scholfield. The board read 7â™ 4â™ 7♥ K♥ 10â™ when things got crazy. Whitford bet her quad sevens and was thrilled to see Scholfield raise. Whitford shoved and Scholfield called it off, only to see that his Aâ™ 6â™ nut flush wasn’t quite good enough. Whitford is up to 35,000.
12:45pm: Marsland out
One of Western Australia’s brightest young players, Dale Marsland, has been dented and then eliminated in the early stages of this ANZPT Gold Coast Main Event.
Marsland took a hit when his pocket jacks fell to the king-queen of Asaf Ami when the board gave Ami a full house. Marsland wasn’t able to recover as he pulled a move holding 6♦ 4♦ on a 6-8-Q-9 board. The only problem was Marsland’s opponent held J-T for the nuts and Marsland was left drawing dead as he was sent to the rail.

12:30pm: Diamonds aren’t a girl’s best friend
Jackie Glazier was coming off a strong WSOP campaign with a deep run in a Venetian Deepstack event followed by a cash result in the WSOP Main Event. However she left her luck overseas after a devastating beat has resulted in her recent elimination.
After Glazier opened from under the gun to 300, a player in middle position popped it up to 1,050, before Andrew Stoltz made it 3,000 from the big blind. Glazier responded with another raise to 6,000 to force the a fold from the third player. Stoltz moved all in and Glazier quickly called.
Stoltz tabled Q♦ Q♣ as Glazier was in great shape with her A♣ A♠. However the poker
Gods spread a board of K♦ 5♠4♦ 6♦ 2♦ to give Stoltz a four-card flush and eliminate Glazier from the tournament.
12:20pm: Man down!
We’ve had our first all in and elimination of the day as Tolly Sakellar has been sent to the rail in rather unfortunate circumstances.
Sakellar was holding pocket kings when his last 8,000 chips were all in preflop against the ace-five of Ron Biggs. Sakellar was looking to fade an ace but he wasn’t banking on the flop landing J-5-5 as Biggs hit trips to take the lead. Sakellar couldn’t find a king on the turn or river as he was left to make the slow trek to the exit as the first casualty of the day.
Meanwhile defending champ Scott Kerr has also taken an early hit to his stack. With a limp and a raise to 400 in front of him, Kerr made it 1,350 to go. His opponent responded with a re-raise to 4,500 which Kerr flat-called.
The flop fell A♣ 10♦ 9♥ and Kerr checked, then folded to his opponent’s bet of 7,000. Kerr slips down to 13,000.
12:10pm: When in Rome…
They do a couple of things a little differently north of the border, with some interesting rule interpretations that might catch out a few players this afternoon. The major difference is the rule regarding the size of a minimum raise. When raising, the minimum amount that a player may raise is the size of the last bet, not the size of the last raise. So if someone min-raises to 200, then the minimum raise here at Jupiters is to 400, rather than 300. I guess it’s not really an issue unless you’re a fan of the old min-raise anyway.
Also up here the button is known as the “buck”. No-one really seems to know why.
These quirks aren’t stopping ANZPT Queenstown champion Julian Cohen who is off to a bright start this morning, already chipping his way up to 25,000. Dave Allan and Jai Kemp have also made moderate increases to their stacks.
Heading in the other direction is Bradley Bower. Catching the action on a flop of A♣ 3♠K♥ , Cuong Le tossed out 100 before Bower bumped it up to 725 to play. Le called and the 10♣ hit the turn. Le checked and Bower bet out a colourful 1,225. Le called and a repeat 10♥ completed the board. Le led out for 1,500 which was enough to force Bower from the pot. He slips to 17,000.
11:45am: A golden lineup
It’s a solid lineup here for the opening flight of the 2010 ANZPT Gold Coast Main Event. Some of the notable players that are lining up in today’s field include Vesko Zmukic, Liam Moffett, Tom Grigg, Joel “StrongPlay” Dodds, Antonis “Toothpick Tony” Kambouroglou, Daniel Neilson, Grant Levy, Ricky Kroesen, 2009 Aussie Millions champ Stewart Scott, 2010 ANZPT Adelaide champ Rennie Carnevale, defending ANZPT Queensland champion Scott Kerr, the newest ANZPT champ in Queenstown winner Julian Cohen and New Zealand’s first WSOP bracelet winner Simon Watt.
We also have a member of the Australian Poker Hall of Fame amongst us, with the Godfather of Australian poker, Maurie “The Master” Pears, taking his seat in today’s field after winning a local satellite.
11:35am: Shuffle up and deal!
We’re bursting at the seams here in the Jupiters Poker Room, with a near-capacity field streaming in to keep the registration booth extremely busy this morning. As such, the start was pushed back a few minutes, to give players some time to find their seats. Jupiters Poker Room Manager Martin Coughlan welcomed everyone to the new facilities here on the Gold Coast and uttered the immortal words, “Shuffle up and deal!”
The cards are now in the air. Each player will be starting with a 20,000-chip start bank with one-hour levels and the blinds kicking off at 50-100. We’ve had word from ANZPT Commissioner Danny McDonagh that we’re likely to be playing eight levels today before we bag and tag.
