The players have returned from their dinner break and are back in action here at the ANZPT Melbourne Main Event. There would have been a few nervous stomachs at dinner, with the short stacks knowing that they are within sight of the cash but also just one misstep from the ultimate pain – bubbling the tournament.
At the moment the big screen is showing 53 entrants which leaves us a dozen players from the money. Whatever happens, it looks like it’s going to be a loaded final table with plenty of big names still in contention.
Some of those in good shape include Kyle Cheong, Paul Hockin, Billy Jordanou, Amanda De Cesare, Matthew Wakeman, James Bills, Manny Stavropoulos, Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang, and previous ANZPT champions Octavian Voegele and Peter Matusik.
While under a little pressure from the rising blinds are Michael Guzzardi, Karim Jomeen, Joel Feldman, Kristian Lunardi, Pat Dillon, Stewart Ballard, Nali Kaselias and ANZ Player of the Year runner-up Anthony Aston.
One player who won’t be there at the end is Australian Poker Hall of Famer Leo Boxell. In a huge preflop war with Kyle Cheong, Boxell went with ace-king up against Cheong’s queens but couldn’t connect with the nine-high board.
It left Boxell on the rail as Cheong is now one of our chip leaders approaching the bubble.
Cheong has just returned from a successful poker trip around Europe where he finished 9th in a World Poker Tour event in Paris for €37,640. With chips in hand, and a notoriously aggressive game, Cheong is going to be one to watch tonight as we head towards the ANZPT Melbourne final table.
