One of the great things about coming to an ANZPT event in Sydney is how it always pulls such a star-studded field. We’re not just talking locals either. It seems that this event regularly attracts international players from around the Asia-Pacific and beyond.

A few may fly in especially for the big tournaments and the juicy cash games. Others have been in Australia since the Aussie Millions in January, amd this event is a must-see stop as part of their adventures Down Under.

American Ronnie Bardah, Canada’s Xuan Liu, last year’s New Caledonia Poker Open champion Teva Tavita, Japan’s former ANZ Player of the Year Iori Yogo, Macau regular and current ANZ Player of the Year leader Raiden Kan and high stakes crusher Doug “WCGRider” Polk are just a few of the international stars spotted in today’s field.

Another New Caledonian in the field is Joel Douaglin who rose to fame in his country when he collected a massive $630,000 score at the Aussie Millions Main Event earlier this year. Douaglin finished third that day, while the man who finished one spot behind him, the UK’s James Rann is another international in attendance here in Sydney.

A third member of that Aussie Millions final table is also in the Day 1b field. He’s not an international but he is the reigning Aussie Millions champion. Of course, we’re talking about Aussie hero Manny Stavropoulos.

We caught up with Stavropoulos for a chat and to find out if he’s recovered from the euphoria of his Aussie Millions victory.

“It was more than a dream come true. It was beyond any dream. I’m extremely humbled,” said Stavropoulos who is playing his first tournament since that big win.

“I took a couple of months off. It was hard to come down from such a high,” he added, but now he has his sights on the ANZPT Sydney trophy and perhaps even more silverware in future.

“I’m going to take a big trip, a bit of a holiday, and go over to Vegas to see if I can keep the run going and win a bracelet!”

It’s great to see such an incredible line up of superstars in action here this afternoon and we hope to see a few big names make a deep run in this event!
