Written by Callum McGregor

The Australia and New Zealand Poker Tour attracts a lot of professionals from around Asia and the world. One of the most established players regularly found on the ANZPT circuit is Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang. Fresh off of his ninth-place finish in the ANZPT Perth Main Event, Huang has come to Sydney to chase another deep run as he attempts to win the crown of ANZ Player of the Year (POY).

Huang began playing on the live circuit in 2006 and has travelled the world in search of the big money tournaments. He has played in Europe and the United States, but with the Asian poker circuit increasing in popularity, he has been able to take full advantage of the tournaments closer to his home in Singapore.

Back in February Huang entered the final table of the ANZPT Perth Main Event as chip leader. Unfortunately for him he lost a few early hands and his chip lead diminished before losing a flip with pocket nines against ace-king, which saw him eliminated in ninth place. However, his efforts saw him earn a lot of valuable points for the ANZ POY leaderboard. The Team PokerStars Pro also had a deep run in the Aussie Millions Main Event. That event contributes to the POY leaderboard as part of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT). Huang made it into the money but was eliminated in 48th place.

Prior to the ANZPT Sydney Main Event starting, Huang had earned 80.73 points to put him in eighth position in the POY. He is still 36 points off the pace of the current leader Raiden Kan, but with Kan eliminated on Day 1, Huang has put himself in position for a deep run amongst the final 100 players remaining in the ANZPT Sydney Main Event.

After a rough Day 1, Huang was able to reach his high point on the final hand of the day when he made a big call with ace-high against Gary Benson. His call was good and Huang raked in the pot to finish the day on 40,700.

Day 2 has been similar for Huang with some rough goings, however recently he managed to double to 70,000 after his A♦ A♥ held against his opponent’s A♣ K♥ .

The Australia and New Zealand Player of the Year will receive approximately $17,000 in prizes. They will receive sponsorship for the Asia Championship of Poker, which includes Main Event seat, accommodation and US$1,000 spending money.
