APPT Cebu: From mango daiquiris to high-stakes poker

November 12, 2010

It’s a beautiful morning here in Cebu at the Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa, with brilliant blue skies, balmy 90F (32C) sunshine and lush green tropical surroundings everywhere the eye can see. The staff are hard at work preparing for Day 1A of the 2010 Asia Pacific Poker Tour Main Event. The ceiling of the massive tent in which the tournament will take place — quite honestly just a few steps from the crystal blue waters of the Philippine Sea — is rippling in the simulated breeze created by a dozen giant air conditioners. It’s an ideal environment for poker.

Players have been trickling into the resort since late Wednesday night, getting their fill of mango, water sports, beach lounging and fruity drinks. Now it’s down to work. The schedule today calls for six one-hour levels of play before the bags come out and the survivors can go back to laying about. Those who get eliminated, of course, will get a head-start on the fun.

If you’re not here, we pity you. But we also invite you to follow the coverage throughout the day to get a taste of what you’re missing. There’s always next year…
