APPT9 Macau Day 1b: Leader Liang

May 28, 2015

Blaring Coldplay covers from the nearby Hard Rock Café have replaced the sound of chips shuffling here as play has come to a halt for the end of APPT9 Macau Main Event’s Day 1b.

After a solid flight yesterday drew 207 players, we saw that number outdone today as 286 joined the hunt for a Main Event title. That makes for a total of 493 players and a prize pool of HK$10,998,830 (US$1,418,599). As for the payouts, 59 can expect a payday with the eventual winner looking to take home HK$2,525,000 (US$325,667).

There were a flurry of notable names in contention today, but after eight levels of play the field had been dramatically cut down. It was bad luck for the PokerStars contingent, with Bryan Huang, Vivian Im, Celina Lin and Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew all facing elimination today.

It was a different story, however, for today’s fortunate 112 Day 2 qualifiers. ACOP Super High Roller champion Steve O’Dwyer survived, he’ll begin tomorrow with 50,900 in chips. Joining him will be Macau regular Raiden Kan who scraped through with 25,000 and MPC21 Red Dragon champion Zhenru Xie who bagged up 50,000.

Among the players here though it was one who rose to the top. China’s Jia Liang leads the way on a stack of 198,200. He eclipses yesterday’s leader Zhifeng Yau who finished with 174,700 and now sits in second place, so Liang will start Day 2 as the one to chase. With only one previous live score to his name, he’s well on his way to adding another here in Macau this week.

Again today players were using the hashtag #APPTMacau on Twitter to share interesting hands and keep their followers updated with how they were progressing. Team PokerStars Online Randy ‘nanonoko’ Lew tweeted his bust out earlier.

For the 188 still in the running it’s back again tomorrow at PokerStars LIVE Macau for a 2pm kick off. After a few players had a big one at the APPT Macau Player’s Party last night, they’ll likely be looking to recharge tonight before getting back to the felt tomorrow.

We’ll be here too covering the action for the PokerStarsBlog. Be sure to join us for all the stories from on and off the felt, and in the meantime you can check the full chip counts and table draw at the top of the APPT9 Macau page.
