After ten days of festivities at City of Dreams Manila, we have reached the final day of the APPT9 Manila, and inside the Grand Ballroom, not only have we witnessed a fantastic turnout of players, but we will also be witness to the crowning of the first champion of the biggest international poker event ever held in the Philippines. The eventual winner will bag an enormous PHP6,016,250, shaving off a big chunk of the PHP25,535,250 prize pool, a massive payout for outlasting such a tough and grueling field. I’ve heard many players express their disappointment at not making it deep because the top prize is simply incredible. And it sure is.

Those who have a chance at bagging the big one are 23 players who remain out of the 585 entries. Iona Finkenrath from Germany owns the top of the rung with 1,084,000 chips. Finkenrath is the only player who crossed the million marker however right there on his heels is Winfred Yu with 983,000. Yu ran deep at the APPT Seoul last year and by the way he has been dominating the table throughout this event, seems as if he is looking to bludgeon his way to get to the top.

Another player who is no stranger to the APPT Main Event felt is Aaron Lim from Australia who captured the championship in Seoul in 2013. Lim sits with over half a million chips. If Lim wins today, he will go down in the books as the first-ever player to win an APPT Main Event twice.

Other players also in the final 23 include Mike Kim from Korea who won the Manila Megastack 2 event at PokerStars Live Manila back in March. There is also Terry Fan from Chinese Taipei who won the Red Dragon event in 2013 and who has been having a stellar year with many cashes under his belt, and Fubo Fu Bang Huang who we blogged about a few day ago. Huang has been scaling up that 2015 APOY leader board ever since the series started.

It should be quite an exciting day of poker with these big guns looking for spots to take each other’s chips and seize the title. Getting to this point entailed having to play a total of 11 hours yesterday and now that a good night’s rest has helped them reset, it is a wait and see to find out who will rise victorious.

Good luck to all the players!
