Big 20 Players Awards: Best Bluff

November 02, 2021inPoker

Voting in the PokerStars Big 20 Players Awards opened yesterday, with PokerStars players and fans invited to nominate their favourite moments from 20 years of televised play.

There are 10 categories and voting is already open in all of them. Feast your eyes on 50 memorable moments, then pick your best.

The first category under the spotlight today is the “Best Bluff” — and it’s going to present one of the very toughest decisions. Although any poker expert will tell you that bluffing is only a small part of the game, there’s nothing that quite gets the heart racing like a no guts, no glory brilliant bluff, particularly when pulled off under the studio lights and millions of people knowing the hole cards.

We have five of the very finest here, with total amateurs deceiving top pros; the best in the world bullying the small fry; a future EPT champion bluffing his way to the title; an online beast going real-life crazy; and a total unknown etching his name in the history books with a made-for-TV moment of brilliance.

It down to you to decide who did it best. All the bluffs are in the videos below.

2. KINGS WERE GOOD, RIGHT?: DANIEL NEGREANU VS ANGEL SHLOMI

Daniel Negreanu commands utmost respect at any table in any card-room across the world, but boy does he know how to exploit that reputation. Here’s Kid Poker at his exploitative best, playing the role of mind-reader and mind-manipulator to get precisely the result he was looking for.

3. BUENOS DIAS, ADRIÁN: ADRIÁN MATEOS VS JOHNNY LODDEN

It’s one thing to pull off a bluff in the corner of a tournament room on day one, but it’s quite another to do it at the final table of the EPT Monte Carlo Main Event, when your opponent is one of the most astute and brilliant poker minds of his generation. But that’s why Adrian Mateos is also one of the best, and why he went on to become the champion…

4. CLICKING BUTTONS: BENNY SPINDLER VS PAUL FOLTYN

If you’ve never seen Benny Spindler play before, this clip will tell you all you need to know. He is one of the most dynamic players out there, always prepared to put maximum pressure on opponents, and also able to pick up weakness wherever he spots it. With the pioneer of “power poker”, Doyle Bruson, looking on, Spindler shows how the youngsters do it. Seven bet!

5. GOOD FOR TV: KRISZTIAN GYORGYI VS TOMAS JOZONIS

If you’re really going to bluff, you need to bluff hard. And if you’re going to do it for the maximum effect, you’ve got to do it when the stakes are highest and with the worst hand possible. Krisztian Gyorgyi had made it to the final nine of the biggest tournament of his career, and he picked up the mighty seven-deuce. And yet…
