Day ones of High Rollers, while chock full of the world’s best players, are still day ones. The average talent level and bankroll of the players might be far higher than, say, the Main Event; but the 30,000 chip pots can’t quite compete with the 3 million chip pots going on over in that tournament right now (which you follow live action of here).

So let’s take a step away from the €10,300 High Roller (which currently has 335 of 407 players remaining) to bring you some of the news from the other huge events that have already finished here at the PokerStars Championship Barcelona.

Chidwick almost wins two €25Ks in three days (for a combined $1.07 million)

Chidwick’s the champ

Up until March 2017, Stephen Chidwick had never won a major PokerStars live event. Don’t get me wrong; Stevie444 has had tons of success over the years including multiple tournament victories (good for live career earnings of $8 million), but just hadn’t been able to get over the winner’s hurdle in the really big ones.

Then, at the PokerStars Championship Panama, Chidwick had his breakthrough victory. He took down the $25K Single Day High Roller for $366,500.

And now here we are five months later. On Tuesday night, Chidwick won the €25K Single Day High Roller, outlasting 112 of the world’s best for a career best score of €690,400 ($813,144).

Two nights later on Thursday, he finished fourth in another €25K Single Day, for an additional €220,700 ($260,143).

That’s a $1 million heater in three days, folks.

In the tournament in which he was victorious, Chidwick had to face a final table which included High Roller animals such as Bryn Kenney ($5 million and counting in 2017 alone); Isaac Haxton (still fresh off his third place finish in the WSOP $50K Player’s Championship); and Adrian Mateos (who won another bracelet this year, as well as the $50K Super High Roller at the PokerStars Championship Monte Carlo).

But in the end Chidwick beat Kenney heads up for the money, title and trophy. He then rode that wave into another final table on Thursday night, but ultimately busted in fourth. Still, that’s an incredible week for any poker player.

And hey, there’s still the €10K which Chidwick is battling in right now!

Piqué finishes fifth in €25K for best ever score

There was someone even more famous than the best poker players at the final table of Thursday’s €25K Single Day High Roller.

Great performance from Piqué

FC Barcelona and Spanish international superstar Gerard Piqué first rolled into Casino Barcelona on Tuesday. He fired two bullets in the event that Chidwick would go on to win, but had no luck and busted relatively quickly.

His second showing on Thursday would prove far more lucrative. On only one bullet, Piqué went all the way to the final table where he battled the likes of Chidwick, Ben Tollerene, Dan Colman, Luc Greenwood, Christoph Vogelsang, and Mustapha Kanit.

He outlasted some of them too. Piqué wound up finishing fifth for a career best score of €129,350. Every year that Piqué comes to play poker here in his hometown of Barcelona, he seems to make money. And long may that continue, we say.

It would have been great to see Piqué take it down, but in the end that honour went to Pavel Plesuv after a heads-up deal with Tollerene. We did get to interview Piqué earlier this week though, and you can check that out here.
